Old Radio Telescope Restored for New Uses - Sky & Telescope
    http://www.skyandtelescope.com/astronomy-news/old-radio-telescope-restored-for-new-uses/
Abandoned for 25 years, a 12-meter antenna once used during the Cold War is now introducing astronomy students to the radio universe.

Deep in the Pisgah National Forest in western North Carolina sits a sprawling communications complex. Back in 1962, NASA established
the site as a satellite-tracking station. But in 1981, it was handed over to the Department of Defense, which installed a 12-meter-
wide radio antenna to collect classified data during the Cold War.

ESA Science & Technology: The curious case of Earth's leaking atmosphere
    http://sci.esa.int/cluster/58028-the-curious-case-of-earth-s-leaking-atmosphere/
Earth's atmosphere is leaking. Every day, around 90 tonnes of material escapes from our planet's upper atmosphere
and streams out into space. Although missions such as ESA's Cluster fleet have long been investigating this leakage,
there are still many open questions. How and why is Earth losing its atmosphere – and how is this relevant in our
hunt for life elsewhere in the Universe?

Oppositions, conjunctions, seasons, and ring plane crossings of the giant planets | The Planetary Society
    http://www.planetary.org/blogs/emily-lakdawalla/2016/06031044-oppositions-conjunctions-rpx.html
When are the solstices and equinoxes on the giant planets, and when are they best positioned for view from Earth? I ask these questions a lot
as I write about Earth photos of giant planets, and I finally decided to gather the answers to those questions in a single post. I queried the
JPL Horizons database for all the dates that I was looking for, figuring I'd save myself time looking up these dates for future posts. "Save
myself time," ha! Famous last words. I spent all day playing with data tables and figuring out what they meant. In this post, I'll list orbital
information for Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, and Jupiter. (If you're interested in Mars, here's an explainer on Mars' seasonal calendar; I'll cover
Mars, Venus, and Mercury orbital events in a future post.)

SETI Institute Calls for New Tools in Search for ET | SETI Institute
    http://www.seti.org/seti-institute/press-release/seti-institute-calls-new-tools-search-et
“Alien Mindscapes – A Perspective on the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence” authored by Nathalie A. Cabrol, Director of the Carl Sagan
Center for Research at the SETI Institute, suggests the need for a sea change in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, where the full
complement of physical, biological, computer and social sciences are deployed in a quest to look for life as we do not know it. Cabrol asserts
that “To find ET, we must open our minds beyond a deeply-rooted, Earth-centric perspective, expand our research methods and deploy new tools.
Never before has so much data been available in so many scientific disciplines to help us grasp the role of probabilistic events in the
development of extraterrestrial intelligence. These data tell us that each world is a unique planetary experiment. Advanced intelligent life
is likely plentiful in the universe, but may be very different from us, based on what we now know of the coevolution of life and environment.”

Could Vanishing Stars Be A Clue To Alien Life? | Popular Science
    http://www.popsci.com/vanishing-stars-could-help-us-find-aliens
There are lots of ways to search for technologically advanced aliens. We can listen for them with radio telescopes.
We can analyze the atmospheres of other plants to search for biosignatures, or look for their laser light shows.

HubbleSite - NewsCenter - Hubble Captures the Beating Heart of the Crab Nebula (07/07/2016) - Introduction
    http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2016/26/
At the center of the Crab Nebula, located in the constellation Taurus, lies a celestial "beating heart"
that is an example of extreme physics in space. The tiny object blasts out blistering pulses of radiation
30 times a second with unbelievable clock-like precision. Astronomers soon figured out that it was the crushed
core of an exploded star, called a neutron star, which wildly spins like a blender on puree.

First Light for FIDEOS | ESO United Kingdom
    http://www.eso.org/public/unitedkingdom/announcements/ann16046/
The new FIDEOS (Fiber Dual Echelle Optical Spectrograph) instrument has made its first observations — known as first light — collecting its first scientific data
and confirming its successful operation. FIDEOS is operating on the ESO 1-metre telescope at La Silla in Chile, the first telescope to be installed on the site back
in 1966. It is one of the telescopes no longer run directly by ESO, and is now operated by the Universidad Católica del Norte (UCN), having been refurbished by the
Centro de Astro Ingeniería de la Universidad Católica de Chile (AIUC).

ALMA Spots Supernova Dust Factory - News & Columns - ALMA NAOJ
    http://alma.mtk.nao.ac.jp/e/news/info/2014/0107alma_spots_supernova_dust_factory.html
Striking new observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) telescope capture, for the first time,
the remains of a recent supernova brimming with freshly formed dust. If enough of this dust makes the perilous transition into
interstellar space, it could explain how many galaxies acquired their dusty, dusky appearance.
