LUNCHMEAT FESTIVAL presents EMPTYSET in a site-specific version of their immersive AV project examining the physical properties of sound and light.

We are returning to the Convent of St. Agnes two years after the memorable Lunchmeat Festival 2016 warm up with Koreless, Emmanuel Biard and their AV live show The Well. This time, there will be six performances on two stages in two different churches. Starting with long and noisy sounds and gradually turning into more dance-oriented acts.

Emptyset is a London/Berlin based production project formed in 2005 by James Ginzburg and Paul Purgas. On their latest EP Skin, Emptyset bring together techniques they developed through their 2017 LP Borders, exploring structural aspects of ritual music and non-Western composition and combine them with recent performance work examining microtonal vocalization and acoustic qualities of materials.

Emptyset have produced installations for Spike Island, Tate Britain and the Architecture Foundation and presented live performances with CTM/Transmediale, Unsound, Berlin Atonal and other notable events and venues.

“We put in a chain of processes that distort the visuals at the same junctions as the sound, so what comes out the other end is always different – it depends on the frequencies of the space, so the distortion varies depending on the room.”

Come to enjoy a short artist talk given by James Ginzburg, Paul Purgas and Clayton Welham offering a closer look at their Emptyset project. They are going to talk about their approach to methods of working and responding to different spaces, materials, forms, and structures through sound, about the acoustic methods they use in their site-specific performances in general, as well as in the connection with their Skin EP.
