Cyclyk is back on Plex for our tenth reference: Calcified
An ambitious and demanding but bewitching release. A journey with many colors and surprising outlines. A canvas with heavy atmosphere.

Calcified is not only an addition of tracks but a true succession of minimalist and intimist pictures. Childhood evocation is the subject. Fake naivety that creates a so particular environment, disturbing and familiar at the same time. Concept of minimalism and work on the musical material are, here, a genuinely artistic approach that goes beyond simple cliches of a "minimal or IDM" music. The musician works the roughest texture to find the best imaginative re-creation and the listener wanders in a strange world between sordid hallucination and perfect abstraction.

As usual with Cyclyk, sound is shaped, engraved and leaves its trace in electronica/experimental landscape. Definitely different.

Bio:
Tom Erdmann aka Popkan began his electronic expedition after witnessing Green Velvet and others at underground parties on Chicago's southside. From there he picked up a part-time job to support his new addiction to electronic music production and sampling. With neighborhood friend Matthew, the two combined studios and began playing at raves and house parties all over the windy city. Eventually it became too much and the duo took their studios solo but continue to push each others music further.
With a new start, and a new vision; Popkan began from scratch. The objective: Keep the dancefloor moving in a way that?s fun and interesting. He went to work on his most recent sound ranging from deep dark techno to funky minimal house. In 2002, Tom gained local recognition with Meiotic Promotions. From there he found himself playing live PAs at some of Chicago?s hottest underground clubs. His live sets are that of extreme enthusiasm for the music, hearing is only the half of it.

CHRIS HERBERT - Mezzotint



Uzasny ambient, Fennesz like - recomended !

Kranky has looked to the hallowed lands of Birmingham for the second time here (those of you in the know will have recognised the cover photograph on the 'Kompilation 2' a couple of years back.) to find sound artist Chris Herbert, who harks from the musical breeding-ground of Moseley. Yep it's the same Moseley that featured so prominently on 'that' Ocean Colour Scene album title, and the same Moseley that is well known in some circles for farting out UB40, but don't hold that against it, Chris Herbert knows how to pick and choose his influences, and on 'Mezzotint' only the brightest shine through. Within minutes of the album's opening track 'Stab City' (a reference to Birmingham? Surely not!) we are thrust into a neon-drenched world of darkness and rainfall, mis-judged glances and rude altercations - this is a sub-aquatic soundtrack to the underbelly of city living, bringing to mind the darker moments of Stars of the Lid or William Basinski for starters, and giving a nod towards Deaf Center at their most atmospheric. The haunted, smudged lo-fi characteristic is kept up throughout the record but is punctuated by occasionally breathtaking bubbles of melody which get lodged in your memory like nursery rhymes from another generation. Those of you familiar with the classic Kranky sound - Loscil, Pan American and Windy and Carl, shouldn't be strangers to deep, submerged ambience, but Herbert gives us his spin on things, his deeply British vision which comes across as honest and involving. Mixing a bass-heavy dub aesthetic he manages to approach Chain Reaction territory with spacious reverberating passages that wouldn't sound out of place played loud in a warehouse in Cologne, but the more you try to compare 'Mezzotint' to another record, the more it serves to surprise you, to show you something else about it's rich sound palette. Like the mezzotint Herbert has named the album after; the closer you look at the music, the more it reveals itself, the tiniest of sounds making the most affecting of revelations. Beautiful.

We need more of this kind of stuff... With artists such as Dilo & Gurtz, Z@p is definitively one of our favourite newcomers from South America. ah doufam, ze to nevyznelo pesimisticky :) mnoho veci je fajn - tuna audio interfacu na trhu/kontroleru za prijemnej peniz, mnozej se DSP zarizeni (duende od ssl, ...). jen sem trosku nasranej, ze sem asi odprasknul jeden synth aneb pouceni - dejte bacha kdyz si neco koupite v us a nechte si to na rano. laborovat s tim ve 2 rano s pivem v ruce neni idealni kombinace :)

Panove tak to je hustotka :) Rytmic noise az electro, ktery bych se nebal pustit na poradne rozjete technoparty :)



Side A is the monolithic joint "run doggy run" + "KOCMOC". The first is a pumping track which sits neatly alongside the early works of Elin, slowly building itself up only to break down to melody that intertwines between the frequencies.
Side B kicks off with "novotel suite ext.", a sweeter near acidic variation of the previous side, followed by "square(s) for loplop@" which breaks it all apart stripping it down to its bass elements until
finally disintergrating into gentle whispers.
The record is said to be "inspired by a nonexistent German record label run by a female DJ" and includes an insert which according to Ivan features "sexually explicit images taken at a Russian university during spring 2003"

The FM3 Buddha Machine is a low-fi loop playing device containing
nine pre-recorded loops which cannot be changed by the user.
Due to manufacturing imperfections, individual machines play the
loops with a slightly different sound, pitch and duration. The built-in
playbackcircuit, with its low sampling rate and bit resolution, produces
a very rough sound, similar to ancient computer games or talking toys.
Rich, spacious textures and moving echoes occur when many of these
machines are played at the same time.

I recorded the sound of one single buddha machine at 96 kHz, using
a state of the art A/D converter. The recording contains audio
information up to 48 kHz, which makes it possible to transpose the
loops down and expose otherwise inaudible hidden details. The
pieces on this CD have been created by granulating, filtering,
pitching and layering either the original loops, or new loops which
were re-assembled out of parts of the originals. Most pieces are
based on one single source loop. The pieces as they live within my
computer are set up as continuously permutating structures and
theoretically could go on forever, just as the loops do within the
buddha machines.

I made quite long renderings of these permutations and later
decided which excerpt of each structure to put on this CD.
Therefore, the tracks are not closed works, but views onto a
perpetual machinery.

An open letter to music journalists regarding file sharing

Berlin, October 13, 2006

Our new release "Layering Buddha" has been put on soulseek already,
encoded by two different users (protox2 aka Maurizio and tipsch), more than three weeks prior to release date.
Less than one hundred music journalists got a copy of the finished product at this time. We are a very small label. We do promotion with nice and expensive finished products. We send out promo copies to everyone who asks for it.
We are embarrassed, frustrated and annoyed by the fact that two of you worked so massively against us. We at imbalance do not think DRM is the way to go and we believe in our customers as being honest and supportive. But:

This case changes the way we will do promotion in the future.

We will either give away CDRs with tagged versions for each individual journalist and we will only do so if we have a guaranteed review, or we will send out CDRs with excerpts. In the case of the tagged CDs we will be able to trace it back if the music appears online and we guarantee we will take every possible legal action against this person. This is sad for those of you who did a great job of supporting us for the last ten years, but we do not want this experience again.
