Berlin's Uwe Zahn released his first tracks as the Arovane EP on the Din label, which also released the first of German dub minimalist Stefan Betke's work as Pole. Stylistically, Arovane's work hearkens back to the insular melodic electro of early Autechre, combining interesting, highly syncopated machine box rhythms with warm, delicate synth textures that evoke a gauzy, somewhat nostalgic mood contrasted by the sharpness of the rhythms. Indeed, while Autechre's Amber has become a touchpoint of sorts for a whole new generation of laptop do-it-yourselfers whose music rarely rises above tribute, Zahn's Arovane work is a legitimate extension of an aesthetic left largely unfinished, and is some of the most interesting and accomplished music of its kind. Fans of Ae, Funkstorung, Higher Intelligence Agency, and Phoenecia take note. After the Arovane EP, two additional EPs for Din (Icol Diston, AMX) preceded the release of Arovane's LP debut, Atol Scrap. Later that year, Tides appeared on City Centre Offices. After a collaborative release with Phonem and a compilation of 12" material, Zahn returned to City Centre Offices for 2004's Lilies.

Meanwhile... Our recently unfrozen earthlings stumbled upon an old, deserted radio station. They were immediately hit with a wave of nostalgia and a deep yearning for the music that shaped their live’s in the past. Luckily, they were able to find Photovoltaic panels to harness the suns UV energy and turn it to electricity. They found themselves broadcasting some of their favorite electronic music from the early 21st century... And than, one of the crew members suggested they insert Morse code in the FM signal, in the hopes that they could make contact with another colony or life form. Bleeps and blips spelling C-R-Y-O started permeating in the air...

This internet-distributed debut ep by the Russian project Paracore can be best described as horror ambient. It a set of haunting sound-spaces created through very minimalist means and without any big soundscapes, sometimes accentuated by simple yet pretty melodic parts. This particular representative of such a nowadays rather ordinary style of dark ambient did not really impress me during the first couple of listens, but on the third try a few of its parts, especially the New Risen Throne -like Ego [Infected], started to ring in my head in a pleasant way.
On the other hand Tactical Jamming (Experimental), which combines the aforementioned elements to a machine-made military drum, remains just a badly executed good idea. Regardless of all this, there is so much innovative and original stuff present that paying attention to this artist's works in the future will probably be worthwhile. So is checking out at least the aforementioned Ego [Infected] and the from-promising-to-just-screaming-chaos going end track, von den hinterweltlern.
