Interview: Carsten Nicolai



It’s as hard to summarize the achievements of Raster-Noton as it is to overestimate their importance in the development of electronic music and art. The label, which celebrates its 12th anniversary with a live showcase at London’s ICA this Friday, was founded in 1996 by Carsten Nicolai, Olaf Bender and Frank Bretschneider. Ever since its inception, Raster-Noton has operated at the vanguard of electronic music, defining the “glitch” movement of the 1990s and casting a long shadow over contemporary pop and dance music with its minimalist, rigorously avant-garde but always playful attitude to sound sourcing and manipulation. Equally influential has been the creativity and consideration Raster-Noton has afforded the tactile and visual aspect of its output - not just the exquisite packaging of its vinyl, books and CDs, but beyond into site-specific installations and A/V performances which inhabit “the overlapping border areas of pop, art and science”.

Portugese label Cronica has released a live recording of Steinbrüchel’s excellent live performance at last month’s OFFF Festival in Lisbon. it is a treat for the ears (was amazing to hear it in the big room) and is now available as a free download.
