Juan José Calarco - Plano Vertical [tube087]

«We continue our travel through the wonders of electro-acoustics with another american, but this time it's a south-american. Please welcome Juan José from the capital of the Tango, Buenos Aires.
'Plano Vertical', consisting of only two long pieces - 'Extensión Activa' and 'Plano Vertical 2' - is a fifty minute journey along a misterious dark corridor, with highly textured sound halls along the way, which appear and disappear under various element-like palettes, like earth, water, fire, wind and others. There are also some sections where we can hear some kind of machinery working around us, feeling like some kind of an obscure sci-fi soundtrack. We can also hear layers of electricity, human steps and voices, boxes and stones falling around, thermal generators, steam engines and a plethora of real-world (maybe out-of-this-world too) noises.
'Plano Vertical' is an amazing electro-acoustics album, worked to prefection and offering us a intense ride all the way to the end. Sounds even better with good circumaural headphones. Not to be missed.» - Pedro Leitão

    V/A - Europa 2008 [plx018]

Two years after our first "Europa V/A" shot we have launched another european project. For the first V/A there was no particular guidelines but here things are quite different. It is not just a collection of tracks but a real common project with a simple and interesting challenge: each artist involved should share a few samples and then with the whole package each one had to make a track.

You will be pleased to learn that five artists we like very much have contributed to this release. Two of them (the very talented Vitalis Popoff and d'incise) are new names for Plex though they are not new in the music scene ! The three others (Zavoloka, Akan and .at/on) already worked with us in the past and its a real joy to have them again.

The result of this collaborative work is an eclectic refreshing compilation and we hope you'll like it !

    - d'incise - La Respiration Suspendue - 4:52
    - Zavoloka - Amazed - 3:29
    - Akan - Ceremony - 5:08
    - .at/on - I Saw Magic - 4:08
    - Vitalis Popoff - Within The Ears

    Monolake vs Deadbeat

Scott Monteith aka Deadbeat and me aka Monolake were both booked for a festival in spain. Due to some communication glitches, the organizers assumed we both will perform together. We told them this would not be the case. However, when we arrived at the festival, all flyers and posters and line-up sheets still stated that we are going to play a set together and there was not the slightest hint that this could not be the case. So, after some discussions, we decided to give the audience what the audience would expect...
In my article about Live performance, I wrote that I prefer to play in the middle of the audience because there I have full control over the sound and I can be as close as possible to the audience. The PA at that festival sounded quite weird, and therefor Scott and me tried to convince the organizer that we'd like to play in the middle of the audience. However, the organizer quite brutally ignored our wish. So, we ended up on stage. Which was good for us, because the monitors sounded far better then the main PA.

The recording of the set, made by the incompetent PA guys for a soft drink manufacturer, which was a sponsor of the event, is mono. Deadbeat versus Monolake in mono?!? Nice deep reverbs and dubby echoes, all that lovely spaces - gone. I assume the PA itself was mono too, and only our monitoring was in stereo.... The file I got from the festival also has been limited and loudness maximized, all perfect things to apply to a recording if you want to ruin it sonically.
But, we had quite some fun playing this set, despite the absurdities we had to deal with.

Technically, the Monolake versus Deadbeat performance was just Scott running Ableton Live on his computer, and me running Live on mine. We both mixed parts of our individual sets to create something new. Both computers were not synced via MIDI, we just typed in the same tempo and occasionally restarted one of the sets to re-sync.
This set is one hour long, and it is the free track of the month for August and September.

Various Artists - Through the Mirror:adcBicycle Revisioned

adcBicycle is Matt Chisholm from Ottawa, Canada. Matt had an EP on Kikapu (RIP) back in 2006 which was on heavy rotation in my player. After finishing his new album one year later, Matt decided not to release it. He got in contact with a bunch of artists he is friends with or fan of, asking them to revisionize his tunes. We are proud to publish this versatile compilation album of boundless and blissful Pop music!

The fun starts with a dizzy electro rap-track by umami from Seattle. allthatfall from New Orleans then add his idea modern up-tempo Pop in a indietronic outfit while Albatrocity of Kansas goes for the Folk- and vocal-harmonies in Matt's music. In his Fell disguise, Seattle sound engineer John McCaig guides adcBicycle into his echo chamber and delivers a steel drum-driven piece of enthralling electro dub. Five is zanf (UK) with damped trumpet and a thousand pounding drums. Roughly divided into two parts, the poppy one is capped by Wisconsin He Can Jog's magnificent adaptation of the bicycle music.
Scotland based Wii wizard The Amazing Rolo opens the second part with a playful remix. Afterwards, map~map (Portland, USA) takes you on a smooth boat ride with chimes and processed guitars before it is North Carolina's Chimp Logic who sends adcBicycle into space and beyond. UK all-rounder Autistici delivers an amorphous track between field recordings and live-processing and, finally, Portland shoegazer The OO-Ray proves his mastership in mighty cello drones. Lean and boneless beauty overall. You don't want to miss this record.

Ebola - Brodmann Area [2008 Acroplane]

Brighton based Wrong Music co-founder Ebola has put together a varied collection of tones and styles on this high quality six track EP. There are elements from the darker end of the electronic music spectrum and some that may also appeal to people on the dancefloor.

If you are not familiar with Ebola's production, it is fair to say that you should not expect to have a delicate listening experience. Twisted tones and aggressive beats are standard fare on all of his releases to date, and this record is no different.
This release begins with a loud snare and kick drum. Soaked in reverb, they leap out of the speakers before the synths and DSP kick in. Gushes of filtered noise and squiggles of electronics tease the listener before the bassline wobbles into action. A heavy track to open, it sounds like an off shot of dubstep, but ends with a granulated drone before track two stamps into your ears. A meaty kick gets stomping and then the bleeps begin. Instead of linear techno though, the track stops and wheezes a bit then kicks in again, then stutters off course before slipping into a dark atmospheric number.
Track three, is altogether more spacey than the other tracks. Bizarre and ambient, a gentle piece using melodic synth pads, it leads to track four with a snappy beat that becomes heavy with the addition of a nagging, dirty bass. Like a blend between hiphop and dubstep this one is probably best suited for afterclub parties.
Track five is a swirling mess of electronic noise. Lots of distorted, long reverb tails with gurgling fequencies twittering around in the high end. This acts as a sort of cleansing for the ears before the final track which opens with some more lo-fi dirt before getting the freaky and bouncy beats out. There is a tasty amount of fuzz and filter work that brings to mind some odd grime production that isn't afraid to throw weird effects in for the sake of keeping things from getting predictable.
Mutant sounds that might work in a club, it'll definitely not bore you.
