    “Owl Splinters” by Deaf Center

    Love is a stream...

It is hard to believe that six years have gone by since Deaf Center’s seminal ‘Pale Ravine’ LP hit the shelves. In the time since, their distinct brand of haunted, cinematic ambience has curled and wisped its way into near mainstream acceptance. The distinct melodies of Norwegians Erik Skodvin and Otto Totland have now become almost synonymous with a specific shard of mysterious, gloomy imagery so it feels high time that the duo should return to add the next chapter to their shadowy history.

In contrast to Skodvin and Totland’s previous work, ‘Owl Splinters’ was recorded in a studio setting (Nils Frahm’s Durton studio, to be exact), and the lo-fidelity, haphazard techniques of their early recordings are now all but gone. With the benefit of some high-end engineering and analogue equipment, Skodvin and Totland’s murky compositions have been transformed from sketches into glorious widescreen spectacles. The blackened, scraping tone of Skodvin’s strings ring out on the album’s opener ‘Divided’ before seismic bass drones push up from beneath with a cacophonous, earthy clarity. This is the same Deaf Center we fell in love with all those years ago, but bigger and more powerful than ever before.

Between the more epic compositions, the two musicians take time to give their own solo instruments the time to breathe – Totland with the piano and Skodvin on the cello. These small vignettes are crucial to the overall narrative of ‘Owl Splinters’, each adding not only a chance for the listener to breathe, but also a crack of sunlight in the oppressively bleak atmosphere. Everything slots into place on the album’s crushing centrepiece ‘The Day I Would Never Have’ – piano and cello tumble into each other forming a dense, affecting cloud of sound. Echoes of half-remembered horror movies, love songs and the dark arts are crumbled together in a Norwegian cauldron to reveal something that at its heart is deeply moving and dare I say it, beautiful? Deaf Center are back, and ‘Owl Splinters’ might just be their most defining moment to date.

    Improvisaatioita Kanssa - Siniaanet

    Sinusovky po finsku...

Jukka Vakkinen-Kannonen is a former TV documentary director who currently lives in Tampere, Finland. He now works as a computer technician assisting small architecture studios with IT services.

Initially intrigued by the work of local heroes Pansonic and Mika Vainio and then later by the work of György Ligeti, Iannis Xenakis, Arne Nordheim and Bernard Günter, Jukka started to perform and record short improvisations using sine waves and field recordings that he originally captured for his documentaries.

To accompany his work, he refers to the texts of German philosopher Martin Heidegger "...a place that the ideas and sensibility behind what I do seem to perceive as very familiar."

After four years and many hours of archived sounds accumulated through improvised sessions, he decided to edit them into a two-piece sound release titled Improvisaatioita Kanssa Siniaanet which simply means 'Improvisations With Sine Waves'
What is interesting with Jukka's work is that instead of the at times irritating and shrill sound that we often associated with sine waves, he has painstakingly carved out a pair of viscous soundscapes that manage to coax out a sense of calm and transition between his several years' worth of source material.

Transition seems to be Vakkinen-Kannonen's main concern when working with sound as we can learn from his quotes below:

"The notion of time is acquired in the passage from one moment to another not in the moment itself."
    Jukka Vakkinen-Kannonen.

"Sine waves seem to end nowhere and start never."
    Jukka Vakkinen-Kannonen.

Words and Mix by Demdike Stare

F/ Xenakis, Burial Chamber Trio, Keith Fullerton Whitman & More

Opening up with the industrial/political machinations of Matthew Herbert’s Radioboy project, this leads to probably the harshest track on the mix, from the unholy Burial Chamber Trio. Greg Anderson, Oren Ambarchi and Atiila Csihar deliver one of the top level drone records to come out of the Southern Lord Stable. Not for the fainthearted, but akin to the best horror movie without pictures.

From here we delve into modern modular electronics from one of today’s best artists in that field: Keith Fullerton Whitman in his Hrvatski mode delivering one of our top 10 records of last year. The design of the release alone is amazing, but coupled with his journey through modular land, it’s unmissable.

From a modern master to a vintage master—Wolfgang Dauner. There is no way to describe the rightness that comes from his records. He influences us so heavily with his left of field take on jazz and rock. Incorporating eastern melodies, electronics and studio experimentation, he is simply The Man. Into the 90’s with a couple of lush ambient tracks, from Air Liquide’s acidic sketch, mixing into a Velocette track that sounds like the movement of the cosmos. Turning left again takes us into the semi-industrial tape experiments of Xenakis—the piece “Orient-Occident,” first released on the fantastic Prospective 21e Siècle label in France. From musique concrete to ourselves, we include an unreleased Demdike Stare track based around a North Indian raga, leading to a secret loop mixing with an intro from a beautiful Kartina Krimsky piece taken from the Music From Mills College compilation. Straightening up and dropping the mood a little with a cut from one of techno’s deepest purveyor’s of late, Donato Dozzy, takes us into the last section. This features one of our secret library weapons mixed with cutting edge synthesis from Dopplereffekt, which we then flip over to a tense, spooky composition from UK Jazz legend Ian Carr, and finish with a crazy African thumb piano track, with effects, from the amazing George Duke.
