fuck yeah!!
San Francisco Water Cooler - s/t [KDVS Recordings 2007]
San Francisco Water Cooler is kind of a gnarled up throwback. They got this blistering and freakish rock thing going with a nod toward classic west coast psych, all topped and creaming with gushing noise. Great, lo-fi production buries the vox in the turbulent howl of guitars, kind of like the first Comets On Fire LP. It's not that strong of a maelstrom, but it's getting there with all the stinky fungus promise you'd appreciate from the doink-addled garage. The jackets are cool, too, with a handmade, DIY feel and the inserts remind me of goofy old hardcore art, roughly sketched and lighthearted, but no less fucked in the skull. Not unlike the kind of raunch-grooved tempest you might find on Siltbreeze. Very much of that aesthetic and very much worth your cash.
I am not sure if it is yet a micro genre but if so, SF Water Cooler's debut sits nicely in something I am gonna call industrial psych. Taking some of the lighter, dreamy elements of jam psych, The Cooler segs into tortured crunch of industrial noise and augments that with a bit of DIY primitivism. Side one flips through the three aforementioned soundframes and seems to serve as a taste of side two, a side long, organic mindturner. If you ever needed something to set you thinking that that Factrix California Babylon album is one fucked up piece of post-mod psych, well, here ya go. This also brings to mind the vibe of Siltbreeze Records, Chapter Two. While not quite a run down the hall screaming "Fuck You I've Found God" this might send me over to the window to yell at a few passing cars. Good stuff.
