Kites - Hallucination Guillotine / Final Worship [Load Records 2007]

The inside sleeve of Hallucination Guillotine/Final Worship’s booklet features an eviscerated woman, an unfortunate victim to the now-abolished Chinese practice of leng-chi, or the "death of a thousand cuts." The image is ghastly: spots of severed flesh, leg removed, and slices running down the one attached limb. On the back is a drawing of a lupine humanoid pulling a tall switch seemingly attached to some sort of kiosk retrofit with a retractable razor blade. Dripping liquid, perhaps the spilled blood of its victims, appears on the kiosk’s facade. Is this the "Hallucination Guillotine" for which half of this album is named? Is there a connection with the slow, slicing death of a thousand cuts?

Kites is the handle of Providence wunderkind Chris Forgues, who boasts an arsenal of homemade equipment and other "mysterical electronics" to make his music. Split into two parts with five songs apiece, Hallucination Guillotine/Final Worship acts as Kites’ third proper full-length. Gone are the Amps For Christ-inspired string arrangements of Peace Trials, as well as any sense of safety: the themes of torture, pain, and execution so prevalent in the artwork is also reflected in the music.

The disc kicks off with its namesake “Hallucination Guillotine.” A rusty lawnmower blade stutters to coherence, the ominous sound of dull whirring blades stuck in infinity. As the whirring gets louder, the blades speed up and get rustier. Death is imminent. Elsewhere, “Glitter Raider in the Hall of Triumph” has Forgues reciting some tone poetry before belting out an ungodly electronic squelch. The Reichian ideas of energy and orgones which Forgues has explored in previous work are still present here, with deadpan vocals evoking a mystical foyer: “I’m going to eject this corridor/ I swear, tonight I will sweep the floor!” The hallway seems to be a transformative vessel. "I flip through a wall/ Radiating outwards/ Burning light blasts from my body/ Energy stunt.” The track ends with gastrointestinal gurglings, perhaps the aural detritus of being transformed into pure light force.

And the similarities with the artwork don’t end there. “Pink Shadows” draws some parallels to the “casual psychedelics” of John Wiese, while the protagonist of “Nice Garden / Lady’s Compact” could be a doppelganger of Throbbing Gristle’s badly-burnt “Hamburger Lady.” “Poison Blur” discreetly emits toxic vapors through your speakers, knocking you out until you regain consciousness just in time for the last track, “Final Worship,” which situates you in a strange land where tiny aborigines talk and play didgeridoos while also tying you down to the ground. Really, a warning should come with this album alerting you to the psychological beheading it can cause: Beware the Hallucination Guillotine.

Pewt'r jjjjj - Byens Lys 061217 [There is No Trouble in Denmark 2007]

First off, this month, I gots to wax extremely lyrical about BYENS LYS 061217, the wonderfuelled debut album by Denmark’s Pewt’r Jjjjj. This magnificent quintet is a kind of underground supergroup comprised of 3/4 of Causa Sui (see Drudion July 007 for review of their LP FREE RIDE), aided and abetted by guitarist Jørgen Teller and Sunburned Hand of the Man’s Ron Schneidermann. Fuck me, this is the absolute ult in amphetamine power drives, an album of sheer exhilarating post-Krautrock, post-psychedelic, hell, brothers’n’sisters, post-everything. Imagine Ash Ra Tempel’s ‘Flowers Must Die’ (without the vocals of John. L.) or perhaps seite 4 of Amon Duul 2’s YETI and yooz somewhat approaching these guys’ pleasure zones. But even those hefty comparisons is doing these gentlemen dudes a disservice because this music really don’t sound like nothing else I’ve be-hear-oled in many a long year. Available on the There Is No Trouble In Denmark record label (www.thereisnotroubleindenmark.dk), I’ve yet to find a website for these wailing druids, but then again – knowing Ron Schneidermann’s itinerant modus operandi – they most probably all got together just for the duration of the show. Wonderful stuff and absolutely free fucking rock! - Julian Cope

Black Cobra - Feather And Stone [At A Loss Recordings 2007]

It is peculiar how two people can rock this much. Consider Black Cobra's bi-bodied brethren: The Spinanes and Mates of State (not that rocking); The Evens and Local H (sort of rocking); The White Stripes (more rocking), Jucifer (yet more rocking), Big Business (pretty goddamn rocking). These are girlie men (and women), however, next to Black Cobra's Hans and Franz.

Originally a bi-coastal experiment, this San Francisco duo has honed and nearly perfected a now-familiar sound - the pummeling sludge of Unsane, Melvins, High on Fire, Lair of the Minotaur, et al. Black Cobra's contribution is a singularity of force that results from a stripped-down lineup. Thus, cut away meanderings from The Melvins and mystical shit from High on Fire. Black Cobra wield only riffs, drums, and howls, solos be damned.

Yet Feather and Stone is perfectly named. Its 25 minutes are surprisingly varied. Clean tones break up the beatdowns of "Thanos" and "Dragon and Phoenix." Hypnotic, palm-muted menace introduces "Ascension." These lighter moments make the heaviness heavier; "Red Tide" drops like a tornado after "Thanos." Jason Landrian's scarred throat recalls Ministry's Al Jourgensen, while Rafael Martinez punishes both drum heads and eardrums. "Below the Cusp" throws tritones like elbows; "Swords for Teeth" feels like a brawl between very large men.

But Black Cobra aren't that big. And they kick the asses of "blackened death-tech-core" bands with five posers and a gratuitous model on keyboards. From now on, there's no excuse for not rocking hard enough.
