Skullflower - Strange Keys to Untune God’s Firmament (2010, Neurot)
Matthew Bower returns with a rendingly severe new double album for Neurot, described by the label's Steve Von Till (also of the band Neurosis) as evocative of "Wagnerian sonic bombast, a Nietzschean worldview, and a warlike cry of rebellion against the false." Well, certainly there are direct references to the great Germanic sagas here, with nods to the Nibelungenlied and Wagner's Das Rheingold opera, but presumably Wagner would never have approved of such dangerously abrasive guitar music. Who knows what Bower does to his equipment to wrench such torrents of scouring noise out of his instrument and amp, but be warned: this is at the bleeding edge of extreme music, fashioning surges of noise in every possible feedback-spinning configuration across two gloriously excruciating discs. It also features some of the doomiest track titles ever to grace an album sleeve: cop an earful of 'Blackened Angel Wings Scythe the Billowing Void', followed by the delightful, 'Chaotic Demons Fly Into My Eyes'...
