De animalibus et reptilibus (c.44): Krokodil. Die Tierdarstellungen im Hortus sanitatis sind durchaus unterschiedlicher Qualität: Je exotischer ein Tier ist, desto abenteuerlicher ist auch die Abbildung, da eine Autopsie nur in seltenen Fällen möglich war. Jedenfalls empfiehlt bereits der römische Schriftsteller Plinius eine Krokodilsalbe zur Verjüngung des Antlitzes und als Wundermittel gegen Falten.
