Cloudland Canyon is the unlikely partnership of Kip Ulhorn and Simon Wojan who met while Ulhorn’s former band (Panthers) was touring Europe and their latest full-length Lie In Light is full of shape-shifting psychedelic shoegaze that would be the perfect soundtrack to the morning after a long night spent doing whatever. These are fuzzy songs mired in a noisy droning haze that makes fantastic background music. Not that you’re gonna fall asleep while listening to it; what I mean is that it doesn’t reach out and grab hold of you but Lie In Light is certainly worth your time. Songs like “Krautwerk” (an obvious and excellent nod to Kraftwerk and the Krautrock genre) are propulsive in places but others are full of bass-heavy lulling sonic slush; sometimes both all at once. The vocals are obscured, the melodies are slight and repeating, and the vacuum of dense thickets of sound is piled as high and you can see. It’s like Belong meets a less-pop M83 or even a little like the warbly sound on my (now) damn near 20 year old Smashing Pumpkins cassette demos. Lie In Light is out now on Kranky and promises a little diversion from you otherwise stale day.
