    The name Oratnitza refers to a ritual cleansing by fire, performed before 'Shrovetide'. The style is even more unusual - a mixture of Bulgarian folklore, Aboriginal motifs (executed on didgeridoo), dubstep, drum 'n' bass and orthodox chanting. The trancy, sweeping rhythms of their music invite the audience on a collective musical voyage. Until the present day there hasn't been a single occasion on which people didn't intuitively start dancing the traditional Horo

    potkal jsem se s jednim řekem, ktery se usadil v čr a hraje stary recky styl Rebetiko,
    ...vždycky jenom na letni sezonu odjede do řecka, kde ma krámek a zbytek roku funguje tady, husti do me ty jejich nahravky z 20.tych let 19. stol. a je to sila docela, recky ilegalni underground pocatku stoleti, ta muzika jiz dnes moc ziva neni, venuje se ji pouze par nadsencu, tema tech pisni je prevazne o koureni Nargileé a hašiše, lásce a drobných kradezich (tehdejsi velmi casty zpusob obzivy mistnich lidi)

    REEFER: jj, to video je z predlonskeho leta, kde jsem se s nimi poznal, jeli zrovna svoje prvni turne a vzali to aj na slovensko, kam je dotahly lidi z bulharska co se ucastnili stejneho workcampu jako ja a znali se s nimi, kluci se tam zdrzeli tri dny a porad se jamovalo, dost me tehda ten jejich pristup odzbrojil, kombinace starych lidovych bulharskych songu s modernim pristupem,...

    Huun-Huur-Tu is making the inevitable move toward globalization that comes with worldwide touring and collaboration with foreign musicians, but so far they have managed to retain their own unique identity and remain firmly rooted in Tuvan traditional sounds. By now the novel aspects of multi-tonal throat singing do not need to be featured to help sell their work. Compared to their previous albums there is a richer harmonic (in the traditional Western sense) texture, and such Tuvan anomalies as the harp, Scottish pipes, and synthesizer make their appearance. However, they remain unobtrusively in the background (the synthesizer is used to generate a virtual wind storm), and one gets the sense that the quartet has a mature, rooted sense of where they want to go with their music. The highlight for me, though, are the excerpts of field recordings made by ethnomusicologist Ted Levin (Smithsonian Folkways's Tuva, Among The Spirits, reviewed below) of throat-singing while on horseback. The music, restored to its physical context, suddenly makes so much more sense. - John Cho

    With her pure & soft-edged voice, Pari is something along the lines of the Joan Baez of Tehran. She went to school for music in Iran, Italy, Germany & Austria, studying opera as well as Persian folk & classical singing. She also studied flower arranging in Japan & wrote a book on it. She lost her eyesight in a car accident in 1971, and thereafter wore Jackie Onassis sunglasses everywhere.
