VA - Sonido Martines Presenta: Nueva Cumbia Argentina, The Buenos Aires Implosion! [2009]
DJ/Rupture casts his finely tuned set of lugs towards the sound of Argentina's Cumbia scene for the latest Soot excursion. Don't worry if you're not quite up to speed with Cumbia, because aside from Rupture's DJ sets the style gets very little exposure in the UK and Europe. The Cumbia name refers to the folk dance and accompanying musical style that's prevalent in the South and Central Americas from Mexico to Argentina. It's generally characterised by slower tempos set to a kind of reggaeton-like bounce mode but as this here 12" proves, there's a wealth of killer party grooves and sensual urban flavour in the Buenos Aires style. Alika's 'Para Bailar Cumbia (Hijo De La Cumbia Rmx)' could be a ruder and far more authentic alternative to Samim's 'Heater' while the two Princesa tracks remixed by Chancha Via Circuito and Marcelo Fabian respectively have a wicked pop potential with her slippery vocals and their nonchalent bounce grooves. The tempo and flow of these tracks is their real charm and should inspire some slinky slow moves with the right dancers. This is really about as different as it gets this week for dancefloor flavours and has to be one of the best records Soot have put out in a long time. Tip!
