In 1997 Harvey Weinstein acquired the U.S. distribution rights for Princess Mononoke and proposed cutting the film to make it “more marketable” as he had previously done with Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind which led to Hayao Miyazaki’s immediate refusal as he was still upset over the earlier edits and walked out of the meeting without negotiation.
Days later Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki sent a katana to Weinstein’s office with “NO CUTS” engraved on the blade the gesture was delivered in a conference room full of Miramax employees who were stunned by the direct and symbolic message defending artistic integrity.
The film was released unedited and when Miyazaki was asked about the incident he simply smiled and said “I defeated him”.
