'Air Conditioning' Could Make Exoplanets Habitable
    http://www.seeker.com/air-conditioning-could-make-some-exoplanets-habitable-1925257372.html
Alien worlds orbiting within the habitable zones of small red dwarf stars may become
truly habitable if their atmospheric circulation balances the temperature extremes.

Media release: MeerKAT joins the ranks of the world's great scientific instruments through its First Light image
    http://www.ska.ac.za/releases/20160716.php

The MeerKAT First Light image of the sky, released today by Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, shows unambiguously that MeerKAT
is already the best radio telescope of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Array Release 1 (AR1) being celebrated today provides 16 of an eventual
64 dishes integrated into a working telescope array. It is the first significant scientific milestone achieved by MeerKAT, the radio telescope under
construction in the Karoo that will eventually be integrated into the Square Kilometre Array (SKA).

OH masers in the Galactic Centre region
    by Haihua Qiao (ICRAR/Curtin University)
This is the preliminary result of OH masers in the Galactic Centre region as obtained with CSIRO's
Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). The top panel shows the OH masers associated with circumstellar
envelops of evolved stars and the bottom panel shows the OH masers associated with star forming regions.

NASA has selected five U.S. aerospace companies to conduct concept studies for a potential future Mars orbiter mission. Such a mission
would continue key capabilities including telecommunications and global high-resolution imaging in support of the agency’s Journey to Mars.

The companies contracted for these four-month studies are: The Boeing Company in Huntington Beach, California; Lockheed Martin Space Systems
in Denver; Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems in Redondo Beach, California; Orbital ATK in Dulles, Virginia; and Space Systems/Loral in Palo
    Alto, California.

    A galaxy fit to burst | ESA/Hubble
    https://www.spacetelescope.org/images/potw1629a/
This NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image reveals the vibrant core of the galaxy NGC 3125. Discovered by John Herschel in 1835,
NGC 3125 is a great example of a starburst galaxy — a galaxy in which unusually high numbers of new stars are forming, springing
to life within intensely hot clouds of gas.

Located approximately 50 million light-years away in the constellation of Antlia (The Air Pump), NGC 3125 is similar to, but
unfathomably brighter and more energetic than, one of the Magellanic Clouds. Spanning 15 000 light-years, the galaxy displays
massive and violent bursts of star formation, as shown by the hot, young, and blue stars scattered throughout the galaxy’s rose-
tinted core. Some of these clumps of stars are notable — one of the most extreme Wolf–Rayet star clusters in the local Universe,
NGC 3125-A1, resides within NGC 3125.

Interpreting the skies using Big Data Analytics – Tech2
    http://tech.firstpost.com/news-analysis/interpreting-the-skies-using-big-data-analytics-325667.html
Big data is a term for data sets that are so huge or complex that traditional data-processing methods are insufficient.
Big Data Analytics is the process of probing those large data sets to uncover hidden patterns and unknown correlations,
leading to the discovery of the interpretation and communication of meaningful trends, leading to discoveries. Analytics
is used to process other forms of data ranging from gamma rays and X-rays, ultraviolet, optical, and infrared to radio
    bands.

Kepler confirms more than 100 planets in single trove
    http://phys.org/news/2016-07-kepler-planets-trove.html
An international team of astronomers have discovered and confirmed a treasure trove of new worlds. The researchers achieved this extraordinary discovery of exoplanets
by combining NASA's K2 mission data with follow-up observations by Earth-based telescopes including the W. M. Keck Observatory on Maunakea, the twin Gemini telescopes
on Maunakea and in Chile, the Automated Planet Finder of the University of California Observatories and the Large Binocular Telescope operated by the University of
Arizona. The team confirmed more than 100 planets, including the first planetary system comprising four planets potentially similar to Earth. The discoveries are
published online in The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series.

Ironically, the bounty was made possible when the Kepler space telescope's pointing system broke.

Featured Image: Supernova Remnants in the LMC
    http://aasnova.org/2016/07/18/featured-image-supernova-remnants-in-the-lmc/
These vibrant images of supernova remnants in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) were created by mapping data from the Chandra X-ray Telescope into three colors:
red for 300–720 eV, green for 720–1100 eV, and blue for 1100–7000 eV. Three scientists at University of Texas at Arlington — Andrew Schenck, Sangwook Park, and
Seth Post — created these maps in order to probe the composition of the LMC’s interstellar medium. The forward shocks of supernova remnants sweep up the inter-
stellar medium as they expand, heating it and causing it to emit the X-rays that Chandra observes. Schenck, Park and Post used Chandra’s observations of these
remnants to make new measurements of the interstellar metallicities in the LMC. To find out more, check out the paper below!

Earlier this year, two independent teams of astronomers published evidence that several supernovae had exploded
some 330 light-years from Earth. Each event showered the solar system in iron-60, an overabundance of which has been
found in core samples from the bottom of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans – and also in deposits on the Moon.

Black hole born without stellar parent, evidence suggests | Science News
    https://www.sciencenews.org/article/black-hole-born-without-stellar-parent-evidence-suggests
The galaxy, known as CR7, is unusual (SN: 7/25/2015, p. 8). It blasts out more ultraviolet radiation than other galaxies that lived at the same time,
roughly 13 billion years ago (about 800 million years after the Big Bang). The gas in CR7 also appears to lack elements such as carbon and oxygen,
which are forged within stars and then ejected into space. One idea is that CR7 is giving birth to first-generation stars, similar to the first stars
ever created in the universe. Another hypothesis is that CR7 harbors the first known “direct collapse” black hole, one that forms when a blob of
interstellar gas collapses under its own weight without first forming stars.

ESA Science & Technology: What lies beneath: Venus' surface revealed through the clouds
    http://sci.esa.int/venus-express/58085-what-lies-beneath-venus-surface-revealed-through-the-clouds/
Using observations from ESA's Venus Express satellite, scientists have shown for the first time how weather patterns
seen in Venus' thick cloud layers are directly linked to the topography of the surface below. Rather than acting as
a barrier to our observations, Venus' clouds may offer insight into what lies beneath.
