    http://aasnova.org/2016/08/02/white-dwarf-surprise-again/
Nearly a year ago, Astrobites reported on one example of Kepler’s unexpected findings: A pair of white dwarfs that were “outbursting”,
becoming as much as 20 percent brighter every few days before quieting down again. Although variable white dwarfs have been studied
for decades, only the continuous data obtained by Kepler provided the coverage to spot these short, unpredictable events. Today’s
paper adds another two outbursting white dwarfs, and begins to explore the reason for this hitherto unobserved behaviour.

Kepler observations of the white dwarf EPIC 211629697. Each point is a measurement of how much light is reaching
the telescope from the white dwarf, with the black data being taken every 30 seconds and the red every thirty minutes.
The grey regions show the outbursts, where the brightness of the white dwarf increased by up to 14 percent. The right-
hand-side figure shows an enlarged version of one outburst.

    http://www.nasa.gov/feature/new-research-reveals-fluctuating-atmosphere-of-jupiter-s-volcanic-moon
Jupiter’s volcanic moon Io has a thin atmosphere that collapses in the shadow of Jupiter, condensing as ice, according to a new study by
NASA-funded researchers. The study reveals the freezing effects of Jupiter’s shadow during daily eclipses on the moon’s volcanic gases.

“This research is the first time scientists have observed this remarkable phenomenon directly, improving our understanding of this
geologically active moon,” said Constantine Tsang, a scientist at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado. The study was
published Aug. 2 in the Journal of Geophysical Research.

Io is the most volcanically active object in the solar system. The volcanoes are caused by tidal heating, the result of gravitational
forces from Jupiter and other moons. These forces result in geological activity, most notably volcanoes that emit umbrella-like plumes
of sulfur dioxide gas that can extend up to 300 miles (480 kilometers) above Io and produce extensive basaltic lava fields that can
    flow for hundreds of miles.

Finding Wolf-Rayet Stars in the Galaxy, their Environments and Implications for High-Mass Star Formation. » An Eye on the Universe
    https://blogs.stsci.edu/...-galaxy-their-environments-and-implications-for-high-mass-star-formation/
Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars are believed to be evolved massive stars that initially started their lives with masses of more than 20 Msun. With such high masses,
they evolve very quickly to the WR state from high-mass hydrogen burning O stars in 1-2Myr. Currently, evidence suggests that the majority of WR stars are
either in or affected by having been in relative close binaries, that can affect their evolution.

A giant stellar void in the Milky Way
    http://phys.org/news/2016-08-giant-stellar-void-milky.html
A major revision is required in our understanding of our Milky Way Galaxy according to an international team led by Prof Noriyuki Matsunaga
of the University of Tokyo. The Japanese, South African and Italian astronomers find that there is a huge region around the centre of our
own Galaxy, which is devoid of young stars. The team publish their work in a paper in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Optical and radio astrometry of the galaxy associated with FRB150418
    ATNF Daily Astronomy Picture
    http://www.atnf.csiro.au/ATNF-DailyImage/archive/2016/02-Aug-2016.html
A fading radio source, coincident in time and position with the fast radio burst FRB 150418, has been associated with the galaxy WISE J071634.59-190039.2.
Subsequent observations of this galaxy have revealed that it contains a persistent, but variable, radio source. Bassa et al. present e-MERLIN, VLBA, and
ATCA radio observations and Subaru optical observations of WISE J071634.59-190039.2 and find that the persistent radio source is unresolved and must be
compact (less than 0.01 kpc), and that its location is consistent with the optical centre of the galaxy. They conclude that it is likely that WISE J071634.59 190039.2
    contains a weak radio AGN.

Explore LHC data on new ATLAS educational platform | CERN
    http://home.cern/about/updates/2016/08/explore-lhc-data-new-atlas-educational-platform
On Friday, 29 July, the ATLAS experiment at CERN released the data from 100 trillion proton-proton collisions to the public.
This is the world’s first open release of 8 TeV data, which was gathered using the Large Hadron Collider in 2012.
In parallel with the data release, ATLAS has launched a comprehensive educational platform to guide university-level students
and teachers on how to use the data and the corresponding analysis tools. With the extensive documentation provided, users
can follow worked examples using the ATLAS open dataset and carry out analyses on their own.

Faintest hisses from space reveal famous star's past life
    http://phys.org/news/2016-08-faintest-hisses-space-reveal-famous.html
Astronomers have managed to peer into the past of a nearby star millions of years before its famous explosion,
using a telescope in remote outback Australia at a site free from FM radio interference.
Research by an international team including astronomers at the International Centre of Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR)
observing the region at the lowest-ever radio frequencies has helped fine-tune our understanding of stellar explosions.
The research paints a picture of the star's life long before its death in what was the closest and brightest supernova
seen from Earth, now known as supernova remnant 1987A, which collapsed spectacularly almost 30 years ago.
