    The Venus Hypothesis
    http://arxiv.org/abs/1608.03074
    Annabel Cartwright

Current models indicate that Venus may have been habitable. Complex life may have evolved on the highly irradiated Venus,
and transferred to Earth on asteroids. This model fits the pattern of pulses of highly developed life appearing, diversifying
and going extinct with astonishing rapidity through the Cambrian and Ordovician periods, and also explains the extraordinary
genetic variety which appeared over this period.

Curiosity has disproved 'old idea of Mars as a simple basaltic planet'
    http://phys.org/news/2016-08-curiosity-idea-mars-simple-basaltic.html
As NASA's Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) celebrates four years on the Red Planet Leicester planetary scientist Professor
John Bridges recounts the mission's success and explains what is next for the one-ton nuclear-powered science robot.
The Curiosity rover hit the dusty surface of Mars on 6 August 2012 - and began its mission of finding evidence about
whether ancient Mars offered environmental conditions conducive for microbial life.
In March 2013 NASA reported that it had achieved its primary objective after scientists found evidence of oxygen,
nitrogen, hydrogen, sulphur, phosphorous and carbon – all essential for supporting living organisms.
Now, the mission, which was scheduled to end this year, has recently been given a two-year extension, with the University
of Leicester's Professor John Bridges continuing as part of the extended NASA science team.
He said: "It's been a great four years – from the excitement of landing we have now had 1421 Martian days of operations
    and driven 13.6 km.

The Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) instrument aboard NASA's Terra satellite passed directly over Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Aug. 2, 2016,
just prior to the opening of the Summer Olympic Games. On the left is an image from MISR's nadir (downward-looking) camera; the width of the image is
235 miles (378 kilometers), and Rio de Janeiro is visible as the large gray area on the coast in the center. The black asterisk marks the location of
the Maracanã Stadium in downtown, where the opening ceremonies were held.

GMT - Are We Alone? A Discussion on Space Exploration*
    SXSW PanelPicker
    http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/vote/66179
"Are we alone?" While most conversation on the topic concerns conspiracy theories and little green men, one notion remains: science.
With new science instruments and researchers who continue to dream bigger, we are now closer than ever to discovering what lies beyond
our Universe. Patrick McCarthy, renowned Carnegie astronomer and director of the Giant Magellan Telescope Organization, Merecedes Lopez-
Morales, staff scientist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, and their peers will discuss how scientists are using
cutting-edge technology to finally confirm if there is life on other planets and to understand the origins of the chemical elements
of the first stars and galaxies.

Two cosmic structures show evidence for a remarkable change in behavior of a supermassive black hole in a distant galaxy.
Using data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and other telescopes, astronomers are piecing together clues from a cosmic
“blob” and a gas bubble that could be a new way to probe the past activity of a giant black hole and its effect on its host
    galaxy.

Astronomers discover new substellar companion to the Pleiades member star
    http://phys.org/news/2016-08-astronomers-substellar-companion-pleiades-member.html
An international team of astronomers has found a new substellar mass companion to one of the stars in the Pleiades open cluster.
The discovery could contribute to our understanding of stellar and substellar multiplicity as well as formation mechanisms in
this cluster. A study detailing the new findings was published Aug. 5 on the arXiv pre-print server.

Simulations suggest Venus may have once been able to support life
    http://phys.org/news/2016-08-simulations-venus-life.html
A team of researchers with NASA, Uppsala University, Columbia University and the Planetary Science Institute has created several simulations
of conditions on Venus billions of years ago using Earth climate models and has found some instances that suggest the planet may at one time
have been capable of harboring life. In their paper uploaded to the preprint server arXiv, the team describes their simulations and the factors
    they used in creating them.

Exploring the Birth of Binary Stars
    http://aasnova.org/2016/08/10/exploring-the-birth-of-binary-stars/
More than half of all stars are thought to be in binary or multiple star systems.
But how do these systems form? The misaligned spins of some binary protostars might provide a clue.
