Featured Image: The Milky Way’s X
    http://aasnova.org/2016/08/29/featured-image-the-milky-ways-x/
This contrast-enhanced image of the Milky Way, observed by the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE),
clearly reveals that the bulge of stars at the center of our galaxy is shaped like a large “X”. The boxy
nature of the Milky Way’s bulge was revealed by satellite image in 1995, but in recent years, star counts
along the line of sight toward the bulge have suggested that the bulge may be X-shaped.

'Strong signal' stirs interest in hunt for alien life
    http://phys.org/news/2016-08-strong-alien-life.html

A "strong signal" detected by a radio telescope in Russia that is scanning the heavens
for signs of extraterrestrial life has stirred interest among the scientific community.

"No one is claiming that this is the work of an extraterrestrial civilization, but it is certainly worth further study,"
said Paul Gilster, author of the Centauri Dreams website which covers peer-reviewed research on deep space exploration.
The signal from the direction of a HD164595, a star about 95 light-years from Earth.
The star is known to have at least one planet, and may have more.
The observation is being made public now, but was actually detected last year by the RATAN-600 radio telescope in
    Zelenchukskaya, Russia, he said.
Experts say it is far too early to know what the signal means or where, precisely,it came from.

    Milky Way Had a Blowout Bash 6 Million Years Ago2016-20 | www.cfa.harvard.edu/
    https://www.cfa.harvard.edu/news/2016-20
The center of the Milky Way galaxy is currently a quiet place where a supermassive black hole slumbers, only occasionally slurping small sips of hydrogen gas.
But it wasn't always this way. A new study shows that 6 million years ago, when the first human ancestors known as hominins walked the Earth, our galaxy's core
blazed forth furiously. The evidence for this active phase came from a search for the galaxy's missing mass.

Measurements show that the Milky Way galaxy weighs about 1-2 trillion times as much as our Sun. About five-sixths of that is in the form of invisible and mysterious
dark matter. The remaining one-sixth of our galaxy's heft, or 150-300 billion solar masses, is normal matter. However, if you count up all the stars, gas and dust
we can see, you only find about 65 billion solar masses. The rest of the normal matter - stuff made of neutrons, protons, and electrons - seems to be missing.

    Surge in the Ring
    https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/jpl/pia20496/surge-in-the-ring
An ethereal, glowing spot appears on Saturn's B ring in this view from NASA's Cassini spacecraft. There is nothing particular about that place in
the rings that produces the glowing effect -- instead, it is an example of an "opposition surge" making that area on the rings appear extra bright.

An opposition surge occurs when the Sun is directly behind the observer looking toward the rings. The particular geometry of this observation makes
the point in the rings appear much, much brighter than would otherwise be expected.

You may well have heard the popular definition of a black hole. A black hole is an object whose gravity is so strong
that not even light can escape. The definition is correct, but it does not give a good picture of why light cannot escape.

Opportunities and Obstacles for Life on Proxima b | PALE RED DOT
    https://palereddot.org/opportunities-and-obstacles-for-life-on-proxima-b/
The discovery of Proxima b is the biggest exoplanet discovery since the discovery of exoplanets. The planet is not much bigger than Earth
and resides in the “habitable zone” of the Sun’s nearest stellar neighbor. This planet may represent humanity’s best chance to search for
life among the stars. But is Proxima b habitable? Is it inhabited? These questions are impossible to answer at this time because we know
so little about the planet. However, we can extrapolate from the worlds of our Solar System, as well as employ theoretical models of
galactic, stellar, and planetary evolution, to piece together realistic scenarios for Proxima b’s history. The possibilities are varied and
depend on phenomena usually studied by scientists in fields that are considered distinct, but an integrated perspective — an astrobiological
perspective — can provide a realistic assessment of the possibility that life could have arisen and survived on the closest exoplanet.

    http://www.nasa.gov/feature/jpl/nasas-juno-successfully-completes-jupiter-flyby
NASA's Juno mission successfully executed its first of 36 orbital flybys of Jupiter today. The time of closest approach with the gas-giant world
was 6:44 a.m. PDT (9:44 a.m. EDT, 13:44 UTC) when Juno passed about 2,600 miles (4,200 kilometers) above Jupiter's swirling clouds. At the time,
Juno was traveling at 130,000 mph (208,000 kilometers per hour) with respect to the planet. This flyby was the closest Juno will get to Jupiter
    during its prime mission.

"Early post-flyby telemetry indicates that everything worked as planned and Juno is firing on all cylinders," said Rick Nybakken, Juno project
manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

There are 35 more close flybys of Jupiter planned during Juno's mission (scheduled to end in February 2018). The August 27 flyby was the first
time Juno had its entire suite of science instruments activated and looking at the giant planet as the spacecraft zoomed past.
