Ceres' Geological Activity, Ice Revealed in New Research
    http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/...ws/2016/09/01/ceres-geological-activity-ice-revealed-in-new-research
A lonely 3-mile-high (5-kilometer-high) mountain on Ceres is likely volcanic in origin, and the dwarf planet may have a weak, temporary atmosphere.
These are just two of many new insights about Ceres from NASA's Dawn mission published this week in six papers in the journal Science.

The Odd Couple: Quasars and Black Holes | Institute for Advanced Study
    https://www.ias.edu/ideas/2015/tremaine-quasars
Black holes are among the strangest predictions of Einstein’s general theory of relativity: regions of spacetime in which gravity is so strong
that nothing—not even light—can escape. More precisely, a black hole is a singularity in spacetime surrounded by an event horizon, a surface
that acts as a perfect one-way membrane: matter and radiation can enter the event horizon, but, once inside, can never escape. Remarkably,
an isolated, uncharged black hole is completely characterized by only two parameters: its mass, and its spin or angular momentum.

Carnegie Scientists Discover Twin Stars Hosting Giant Planets
    http://www.azoquantum.com/news.aspx?newsID=4883
Scientists from Carnegie have identified three giant planets in a binary star system composed of stellar
''twins'' that are siblings of the Sun. One star hosts two planets and the third one is hosted by the other star.

Images From Sun’s Edge Reveal Origins of Solar Wind
    http://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2016/images-from-sun-s-edge-reveal-origins-of-solar-wind
Ever since the 1950s discovery of the solar wind – the constant flow of charged particles from the sun – there’s been a stark disconnect between this outpouring
and the sun itself. As it approaches Earth, the solar wind is gusty and turbulent. But near the sun where it originates, this wind is structured in distinct rays,
much like a child’s simple drawing of the sun. The details of the transition from defined rays in the corona, the sun’s upper atmosphere, to the solar wind have
    been, until now, a mystery.

    Solar System Exploration
    http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/news/2016/08/31/dawn-sets-course-for-higher-orbit
After studying Ceres for more than eight months from its low-altitude science orbit,
NASA's Dawn spacecraft will move higher up for different views of the dwarf planet.

Dawn has delivered a wealth of images and other data from its current perch at 385 km
above Ceres' surface, which is closer to the dwarf planet than the International Space
Station is to Earth. Now, the mission team is pivoting to consider science questions
that can be examined from higher up.

Copernicus Sentinel-1A satellite hit by space particle / Sentinel-1 / Copernicus / Observing the Earth / Our Activities / ESA
    http://www.esa.int/...h/Copernicus/Sentinel-1/Copernicus_Sentinel-1A_satellite_hit_by_space_particle
ESA engineers have discovered that a solar panel on the Copernicus Sentinel-1A satellite was hit by a millimetre-size particle in orbit on 23 August.
Thanks to onboard cameras, ground controllers were able to identify the affected area. So far, there has been no effect on the satellite’s routine operations.

A sudden small power reduction was observed in a solar array of Sentinel-1A, orbiting at 700 km altitude, at 17:07 GMT on 23 August. Slight changes in
the orientation and the orbit of the satellite were also measured at the same time.
