NASA has selected two missions that have the potential to open new windows on one of the earliest eras in the history of our solar system –
a time less than 10 million years after the birth of our sun. The missions, known as Lucy and Psyche, were chosen from five finalists and
will proceed to mission formulation, with the goal of launching in 2021 and 2023, respectively.

EXPLORING A FAST RADIO BURST IN THREE DIMENSIONS | Gemini Observatory
    http://www.gemini.edu/node/12620

Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs), sudden rapid explosions of energy from space, have challenged astronomers since their discovery in 2007. Typically lasting only
a few milliseconds, many questions remain, including what powers these bursts, their distance beyond our galaxy, and what their host galaxies might look like.

"Now, thanks to deep Gemini observations, we know that at least one of these FRBs originated in a discrete source within a distant dwarf galaxy located some
three billion light-years beyond our Milky Way Galaxy," said Shriharsh Tendulkar of McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

Tendulkar and an international team of astronomers presented the results today at the 229th meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Grapevine, Texas.
The characterization of the host galaxy was published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, and accompanied the research team’s results on a campaign to
precisely locate the FRB, published in the journal Nature.

Researchers get first look at new, extremely rare galaxy | Programs and Events Calendar
    http://naturalsciences.org/calendar/news/researchers-get-first-look-at-new-extremely-rare-galaxy/

Approximately 359 million light-years away from Earth, there is a galaxy with an innocuous name (PGC 1000714) that doesn’t look
quite like anything astronomers have observed before. New research provides a first description of a well-defined elliptical-like
core surrounded by two circular rings — a galaxy that appears to belong to a class of rarely observed, Hoag-type galaxies. This
work was done by scientists at the University of Minnesota Duluth and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.

fotografie zachycuje celou řadu mladých hvězd a dalších objektů jinak skrytých našemu zraku hluboko v hustých prachových oblacích.

How much light does a supernova shed on the history of universe?

New research by cosmologists at the University of Chicago and Wayne State University confirms the accuracy of Type Ia supernovae in measuring
the pace at which the universe expands. The findings support a widely held theory that the expansion of the universe is accelerating and such
acceleration is attributable to a mysterious force known as dark energy. The findings counter recent headlines that Type Ia supernova cannot
be relied upon to measure the expansion of the universe.

Using light from an exploding star as bright as entire galaxies to determine cosmic distances led to the 2011 Nobel Prize in physics. The method
relies on the assumption that, like lightbulbs of a known wattage, all Type Ia supernovae are thought to have nearly the same maximum brightness
when they explode. Such consistency allows them to be used as beacons to measure the heavens. The weaker the light, the farther away the star. But
the method has been challenged in recent years because of findings the light given off by Type Ia supernovae appears more inconsistent than expected.

“The data that we examined are indeed holding up against these claims of the demise of Type Ia supernovae as a tool for measuring the universe,”
said Daniel Scolnic, a postdoctoral scholar at UChicago’s Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics and co-author of the new research published in
Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. “We should not be persuaded by these other claims just because they got a lot of attention,
though it is important to continue to question and strengthen our fundamental assumptions.”

Dozens of new ultra-diffuse galaxies discovered in Abell 2744
    http://phys.org/news/2017-01-dozens-ultra-diffuse-galaxies-abell.html

Astronomers have found a total of 76 new ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in the massive galaxy cluster designated Abell 2744
(also known as Pandora's Cluster). The discovery updates the current census of galaxies in this cluster and could help
better understand the nature of UDGs in general. The findings were presented in a paper published Dec. 30 on arXiv.org.

Three-dimensional subsurface images are revealing structures within the Martian polar ice caps, including previously obscured layering,
a larger volume of frozen carbon dioxide contained in the south polar cap, and bowl-shaped features that may be buried impact craters
within both polar caps. This information will help scientists better understand Martian climate changes and may allow them to determine
the age of the polar caps without using climate models. The 3-D data volumes were assembled from observations by the Shallow Radar
(SHARAD) onboard NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) during more than 2000 orbit passes over each Martian pole.

NASA's Webb Telescope to Resume Vibration Testing in January
    https://www.nasa.gov/...ure/goddard/2017/nasas-webb-telescope-to-resume-vibration-testing-in-january

Vibration tests are one of the many tests that spacecraft and instruments endure to ensure they are fit for spaceflight.
During routine testing of NASA's James Webb Space Telescope, an unexpected response occurred from several of the more than
100 devices designed to detect small changes in the motion of the structure. This prompted the engineers put the vibration
tests on hold to determine the cause.

Since then, the team of engineers and scientists have analyzed many potential scenarios for the measured responses. They
are closer to pinning down the cause, and have successfully conducted three low-level vibrations of the telescope.

All visual and ultrasonic examinations of the structure continue to show it to be sound.

The next round of WTF star papers continues. Brian Metzger (whom I know from grad school), Ken Shen, and Nicholas Stone have submitted
a paper to MNRAS exploring in detail the idea that that Boyajian’s Star is dimming secularly because it recently “ate” a companion, and
it’s still processing the energy from the merger, which is slowly “dribbling” out as an excess of luminosity.

Astronomers detect a strong outburst of an embedded young stellar object
    http://phys.org/news/2017-01-astronomers-strong-outburst-embedded-young.html

Astronomers from the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory in Armenia have discovered a strong outburst of the embedded young stellar object
(YSO) designated UKIDSS-J185318.36+012454.5. This newly detected event could provide important insights for the understanding of eruptive
variability of young stars. The researchers presented their discovery in a paper published Dec. 30 on the arXiv preprint server.
