Media representatives are invited to attend the first stone ceremony of the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) on Friday 26 May 2017 on Cerro Armazones,
a 3046-metre peak in northern Chile about 20 kilometres from ESO’s Paranal Observatory. The ceremony will begin at 13:30 local time and is expected
to finish around 15:30, and will also mark the connection of the observatory to the power grid. The first stone will be laid by the President of

Image Release: ALMA Captures Explosive Star Birth – National Radio Astronomy Observatory
    https://public.nrao.edu/news/image-release-alma-captures-explosive-star-birth/

Around 500 years ago, a pair of adolescent protostars had a perilously close encounter that blasted their stellar nursery apart.

Astronomers using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have examined the widely scattered debris from this explosive event,
gaining new insights into the sometimes-fierce relationship among sibling stars.

Shortly after starting to form some 100,000 years ago, several protostars in the Orion Molecular Cloud 1 (OMC-1), a dense and active star
factory about 1,500 light-years from Earth just behind the Orion Nebula, latched onto each other gravitationally and gradually drew closer.

Small asteroids pass within this distance of Earth several times each week, but this upcoming close approach is the closest
by any known asteroid of this size, or larger, since asteroid Toutatis , a 3.1-mile (five-kilometer) asteroid, which approached within
about four lunar distances in September 2004. The next known encounter of an asteroid of comparable size will occur in 2027 when
the half-mile-wide (800-meter-wide) asteroid 1999 AN10 will fly by at one lunar distance, about 236,000 miles (380,000 kilometers).

When the image was taken, the spacecraft was 7,900 miles (12,700 kilometers) from the planet.

The image was processed by Roman Tkachenko, and the description is from John Rogers, the citizen scientist who identified the point of interest.

POSSIBLE VENUS TWIN DISCOVERED AROUND DIM STAR | SETI Institute
    http://www.seti.org/seti-institute/press-release/possible-venus-twin-discovered-around-dim-star

Astronomers using NASA’s Kepler space telescope have found a planet 219 light-years away that seems to be a close relative to Venus. This newly
discovered world is only slightly larger than Earth, and orbits a low-temperature star called Kepler-1649 that’s one-fifth the diameter of our Sun.

Neil deGrasse Tyson: I’ll go to Mars after Elon Musk sends his mom - Redorbit
    http://www.redorbit.com/...3417836/neil-degrasse-tyson-ill-go-to-mars-after-elon-musk-sends-his-mom/

As the Washington Post explained, Tyson was answering questions from fans in a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” session on Sunday when someone
inquired what he thought about SpaceX’s recent success, and whether or not he would ever be willing to take a one-way trip to Mars.

Tyson responded with his trademark humor. “I really like Earth. So any space trip I take, I'm double-checking that there's sufficient funds
for me to return,” he wrote. “Also, I'm not taking that trip until Elon Musk (sends) his mother and brings her back alive. Then I'm good for it.”

OCTOCAM Looks Toward a New Era of Discovery | Gemini Observatory
    http://www.gemini.edu/node/12656?utm_content=bufferc5510

Gemini Observatory announces the development of a major new facility-class broadband optical and near-infrared imager and spectrograph named OCTOCAM.

"OCTOCAM provides Gemini with a unique capability as we look ahead to the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope era," says Stephen Goodsell who manages
the instrument program for Gemini. "The instrument will be able to rapidly acquire transient objects and simultaneously obtain eight images or spectral
bands from each target," according to Goodsell. "This is important because it provides a much greater level of information and detail, which will
undoubtedly lead to transformational scientific discoveries."

New Model: Nearby Exoplanet TRAPPIST-1e May Be Just Right for Life
    http://www.space.com/36349-trappist-1e-just-right-for-life.html

Tucked between a boiled-away desert and a giant snowball, an alien world called TRAPPIST-1e
may be the only habitable planet in a newly discovered batch of seven, according to a new climate model.

When researchers announced the discovery of seven planets that closely orbit the cool red star TRAPPIST-1 in February,
there was a rush to learn more about the little rocky worlds and find out if any might be habitable. One of the first
scientists to model the worlds' potential climates in depth was Eric Wolf, a researcher at University of Colorado, Boulder.
His model, along with others still to come, will paint a clearer picture of what the system's planets could actually be like.

Wolf modeled three planets around TRAPPIST-1 and tested different potential atmospheres to see whether any let liquid water
exist on a planet's surface. He found that, in his simulation, only one of the planets listed as potentially habitable would
be able to keep liquid water.

News | Ceres' Temporary Atmosphere Linked to Solar Activity
    https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?release=2017-098

Scientists have long thought that Ceres may have a very weak, transient atmosphere, but mysteries lingered about its origin and why it's not always present.
Now, researchers suggest that this temporary atmosphere appears to be related to the behavior of the sun, rather than Ceres' proximity to the sun. The study
was conducted by scientists from NASA's Dawn mission and others who previously identified water vapor at Ceres using other observatories.

"We think the occurrence of Ceres' transient atmosphere is the product of solar activity," said Michaela Villarreal, lead author of the new study
in the Astrophysical Journal Letters and researcher at the University of California, Los Angeles.

    Atmosphere around super-Earth detected
    https://phys.org/news/2017-04-atmosphere-super-earth.html

Astronomers have detected an atmosphere around the super-Earth GJ 1132b. This marks the first detection of an atmosphere
around a low-mass super-Earth, in terms of radius and mass the most Earth-like planet around which an atmosphere has yet
been detected. Thus, this is a significant step on the path towards the detection of life on an exoplanet. The team, which
includes researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, used the 2.2-m ESO/MPG telescope in Chile to take images
of the planet's host star, GJ 1132, and measured the slight decrease in brightness as the planet and its atmosphere absorbed
some of the starlight while passing directly in front of their host star.
