Oceans galore: new study suggests most habitable planets may lack dry land
    http://www.ras.org.uk/...6-oceans-galore-new-study-suggests-most-habitable-planets-may-lack-dry-land

When it comes to exploring exoplanets, it may be wise to take a snorkel along. A new study, published in a paper
in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, has used a statistical model to predict that most
habitable planets may be dominated by oceans spanning over 90% of their surface area.

The author of the study, Dr Fergus Simpson of the Institute of Cosmos Sciences at the University of Barcelona, has
constructed a statistical model – based on Bayesian probability – to predict the division between land and water
    on habitable exoplanets.

This enhanced color Jupiter image, taken by the JunoCam imager on NASA’s Juno spacecraft, showcases several interesting features on the apparent edge (limb)
of the planet. JunoCam images of Jupiter sometimes appear to have an odd shape. This is because the Juno spacecraft is so close to Jupiter that it cannot
capture the entire illuminated area in one image—the sides get cut off.

Juno acquired this image on March 27, 2017, at 2:12 a.m. PDT (5:12 a.m. EDT), as the spacecraft performed a close flyby of Jupiter. When the image was taken,
the spacecraft was about 20 000 kilometers from the planet. This enhanced color image was created by citizen scientist Bjorn Jonsson.

The Arrhythmic Beating of a Black Hole Heart | NASA
    https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/chandra/the-arrhythmic-beating-of-a-black-hole-heart.html

At the center of the Centaurus galaxy cluster, there is a large elliptical galaxy called NGC 4696. Deeper still,
there is a supermassive black hole buried within the core of this galaxy.

New data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and other telescopes has revealed details about this giant black hole,
located some 145 million light years from Earth. Although the black hole itself is undetected, astronomers are learning
about the impact it has on the galaxy it inhabits and the larger cluster around it.

Ultraviolet spectroscopic evolution of a tidal disruption event investigated by astronomers
    https://phys.org/news/2017-04-ultraviolet-spectroscopic-evolution-tidal-disruption.html

An international team of astronomers led by Jonathan S. Brown of the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio,
has studied the ultraviolet spectroscopic evolution of a nearby low-luminosity tidal disruption event (TDE)
known as iPTF16fnl. The results of this study, published Apr. 7 on arXiv.org., offer new clues on the nature
    of this TDE.

TDE occurs when a star passes close enough to a supermassive black hole and is pulled apart by the black hole's
tidal forces, causing the process of disruption. Such tidally disrupted stellar debris then rains down on the black
hole and radiation emerges from the innermost region of accreting debris, which indicates the presence of a TDE.

Space debris problem getting worse, say scientists
    https://phys.org/news/2017-04-space-debris-problem-worse-scientists.html

Scientists sounded the alarm Tuesday over the problems posed to space missions from
orbital junk—the accumulating debris from mankind's six-decade exploration of the cosmos.

In less than a quarter of a century, the number of orbiting fragments large enough to
destroy a spacecraft has more than doubled, a conference in Germany heard.

And the estimated tally of tiny objects—which can harm or degrade spacecraft in the event
of a collision, and are hard to track—is now around 150 million.

Arecibo observed asteroid 2014 JO25 which will flyby Earth on April 19, 2017 at ~4.57 Lunar Distances.
    http://www.naic.edu/~pradar/press/2014JO25.php

2014 JO25 was discovered in May 2014 by the Catalina Sky Survey and designated a potentially hazardous asteroid based on its size
and relative proximity to Earth. Prior to accurate radar measurements, its diameter was estimated using data from the NEOWISE spacecraft
to be 650 meters, more than twice the size of the Arecibo telescope's reflector. The Arecibo Observatory Planetary Radar system, which
is the most sensitive and the most active in the world, has now provided direct measurement of this asteroid’s size, shape, rotation,
    and near-surface geology.

“Using radar, we can illuminate a near-Earth asteroid and directly measure its features. In this case, we found 2014 JO25 to be a contact-
binary or peanut-shaped asteroid,” noted Dr. Edgard Rivera-Valentín, Planetary Scientist with the Universities Space Research Association
(USRA) at Arecibo Observatory. “Each lobe is between about 640 m - 670 m in diameter for a total size of about 1.3 kilometers (0.8 miles)
along its widest point, so twice as large as inferred using infrared data from the NEOWISE spacecraft" continued Rivera-Valentín.
Additionally, Arecibo data suggests 2014 JO25 rotates about once every 3.5 hours.

UA astronomers Huanian Zhang and Dennis Zaritsky are lifting the veil of our galactic home by providing
the first detections of diffuse hydrogen wafting about in a vast halo surrounding the Milky Way.

Sometimes it takes a lot of trees to see the forest. In the case of the latest discovery made by astronomers at the University of Arizona,
exactly 732,225. Except that in this case, the "forest" is a veil of diffuse hydrogen gas enshrouding the Milky Way, and each "tree" is
another galaxy observed with the 2.5-meter telescope of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.

After combining this staggering number of spectra — recorded patterns of wavelengths revealing clues about the nature of a cosmic target —
UA astronomers Huanian Zhang and Dennis Zaritsky report the first detections of diffuse hydrogen wafting about in a vast halo surrounding
the Milky Way. Such a halo had been postulated based on what astronomers knew about other galaxies, but never directly observed.

LISA Pathfinder, a mission led by ESA (the European Space Agency) with contributions from NASA, has successfully demonstrated
critical technologies needed to build a space-based observatory for detecting ripples in space-time called gravitational waves.
Now a team of NASA scientists hopes to take advantage of the spacecraft's record-breaking sensitivity to map out the distribution
of tiny dust particles shed by asteroids and comets far from Earth.

Most of these particles have masses measured in micrograms, similar to a small grain of sand. But with speeds greater than
22,000 mph (36,000 kph), even micrometeoroids pack a punch. The new measurements could help refine dust models used by researchers
in a variety of studies, from understanding the physics of planet formation to estimating impact risks for current and future spacecraft.
