According to the Times, Mata is now free to start talking to other clubs about a free transfer this summer.
The broadsheet reveals that Man United have yet to trigger a vital clause in the midfielder’s contract:
It has also emerged today that Juan Mata can now talk to foreign clubs about a free transfer away from Old Trafford as Manchester United are yet to activate the 12-month option in his contract.
The club inserted an option to extend the deal, at their own discretion, by another 12 months.
It is understood that Mata is unaware that the option has been triggered and the Spaniard can therefore in theory open negotiations about leaving Old Trafford on a free transfer under the Bosman ruling at the end of June.
