Edin Dzeko could leave Roma in the final days of the January window after a falling-out with Paulo Fonseca, Corriere dello Sport and multiple outlets reported over the weekend. The striker, who had a cold relationship with the coach to being week, did not appreciate entering the Coppa Italia tilt against Spezia only at the beginning of the extra time and let the gaffer know it, which led to heated argument the next day in front of the rest of the locker room. Fonseca excluded him from the squad list for the Serie A match versus the same opponent and stripped him of the captaincy, with the tacit approval by the management.
The front office quickly tried to put together a deal to remedy the situation through the transfer market, proposing a swap of loans to Inter between Edin Dzeko and Christian Eriksen, Gazzetta dello Sport informed. However, the Nerazzurri replied that they were not interested and that they were not in position to make a move, even though they have long coveted the Bosnian international to fill out their front-line and the two players have matching salaries.
While the two sides will try to reconcile over the next few days, the club will look for other possible destinations, but Dzeko only want to transfer to top clubs and preferably stay in Serie A, however it will be hard to find a satisfying solution due to his age and wages (€7.5M net per year).
