Brussels in push for new powers

The European Commission is pushing for a big increase in powers over crime, policing and the treatment of criminals.

The President of the Commission Jose Manuel Barroso has told the BBC that this is not a power grab but an attempt to make Europe a safer place.

The plan announced at a news conference in Brussels would give the Court of Justice and the European Parliament a say on policing and would mean getting rid of countries' automatic right to veto plans they don't like.

The Commission says this would speed up decision-making, which it says at the moment is "slow and cumbersome".

The Air Force Office of Scientific Research recently began funding a new research area that includes a study of blogs. Blog research may provide information analysts and warfighters with invaluable help in fighting the war on terrorism.

Dr. Brian E. Ulicny, senior scientist, and Dr. Mieczyslaw M. Kokar, president, Versatile Information Systems Inc., Framingham, Mass., will receive approximately $450,000 in funding for the 3-year project entitled "Automated Ontologically-Based Link Analysis of International Web Logs for the Timely Discovery of Relevant and Credible Information."

"It can be challenging for information analysts to tell what's important in blogs unless you analyze patterns," Ulicny said.

Patterns include the content of the blogs as well as what hyperlinks are contained within the blog.

Within blogs, hyperlinks act like reference citations in research papers thereby allowing someone to discover the most important events bloggers are writing about in just the same way that one can discover the most important papers in a field by finding which ones are the most cited in research papers.

President Bush and U.S. policy-makers are receiving more intelligence from open sources such as Internet blogs and foreign newspapers than they previously did, senior intelligence officials said.

The new Open Source Center (OSC) at CIA headquarters recently stepped up data collection and analysis based on bloggers worldwide and is developing new methods to gauge the reliability of the content, said OSC Director Douglas J. Naquin.

"A lot of blogs now have become very big on the Internet, and we're getting a lot of rich information on blogs that are telling us a lot about social perspectives and everything from what the general feeling is to ... people putting information on there that doesn't exist anywhere else," Mr. Naquin told The Washington Times.

Eliot A. Jardines, assistant deputy director of national intelligence for open source, said the amount of unclassified intelligence reaching Mr. Bush and senior policy-makers has increased as a result of the center's creation in November.

"We're certainly scoring a number of wins with our ultimate customer," said Mr. Jardines, who became the first high-level official in charge of the government's nonsecret intelligence in December.

The Order’s methodology is a strict adherence to Hegelian Dialectics. Apply those dialectics to the two political parties. Essentially, political parties are artificial groupings designed to create division. A contrived choice between two bad options, without recognizing alternative better options, creates the perception of freedom. Supposedly opposing ideologies generates deliberate distraction and polarizations (as in divide and conquer). The very public, distracting, lengthy, increasingly hostile battle between the Republicans, posing as thesis, and the Democrats posing as antithesis is nothing but orchestrated opposition. Elections, staged for the masses, are completely irrelevant political soap operas. Domestic and foreign policies remain precisely the same despite which puppet president is in office.

Despite popular misconceptions, our government is supposed to be a representative Republic (not a democracy). In both democracies and Republics people vote. That single act does not make you free.

Police hold mother-of-three for reading 'Independent' outside Downing Street

An anti-Iraq war protester was questioned by police outside Downing Street because she was reading The Independent.

Charity Sweet, 40, and a mother-of-three, was holding a copy of Thursday's edition which carried the headline: "Warning: if you read this newspaper you may be arrested under the Government's anti-terror laws."

Inside was an article reprinted from Vanity Fair magazine which ran across the first three pages of that day's issue of the newspaper. The article, by the writer Henry Porter, accused the Blair Government of a sustained erosion of civil liberties.

As she sat outside Downing Street, Ms Sweet was approached and questioned by a police officer. When he had finished his inquiries she was astonished to be handed a form detailing the reasons for his interest which included "reading today's Independent".

A new audio message purportedly by Osama bin Laden was broadcast today in which he eulogises the late leader of al-Qaida in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, as a "knight, the lion of holy war". The message emerged on an Islamic website and played alongside an old still image of Bin Laden and previously seen video footage of Zarqawi, who was killed by a US airstrike north-east of Baghdad on June 7. Bin Laden effusively praised the Jordanian-born militant, who some saw as a growing challenger to Bin Laden's status as leader of the global Islamist jihad, often using rhyming couplets. [Guardian]

Israel warns: free soldier or PM dies

ISRAEL last night threatened to assassinate Palestinian Prime Minister Ismael Haniyeh if Hamas militants did not release a captured Israeli soldier unharmed.

The unprecedented warning was delivered to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in a letter as Israel debated a deal offered by Hamas to free Corporal Gilad Shalit.

It came as Israeli military officials readied a second invasion force for a huge offensive into Gaza.

Hamas's Gaza-based political leaders, including Mr Haniyeh, had already gone into hiding.

But last night's direct threat to kill Mr Haniyeh, a democratically elected head of state, sharply raised the stakes.

IDF forces arrest Palestinian cabinet ministers, lawmakers




The detainees will be brought before a judge for a remand hearing within the next 96 hours, and legal proceedings against them will be carried out in military courts in the territories.

Israel intends to arrest more senior Hamas figures in addition to the dozens of Palestinian lawmakers and ministers arrested in a predawn raid Thursday, the Justice Ministry said Thursday.

The detention of Hamas parliamentarians in the early hours of Thursday morning had been planned several weeks ago and received approval from Mazuz on Wednesday. The same day, Shin Bet Director Yuval Diskin presented Prime Minister Ehud Olmert with the list of Hamas officials slated for detention.

The Group of Eight industrialized countries said Thursday that the Hamas arrests raised "particular concerns."

Španělský parlament přijal nový autorský zákon. Ten staví do ilegality stahování přes P2P, včetně stahování pro osobní potřebu. Odpovědnost za toto konání je v rovině občanského práva, čili za použití P2P nehrozí právní postih, ale povinnost uhradit vlastníkovi nebo vykonavateli autorských práv odškodnění ve výši způsobené ztráty. Naopak trestného činu se dopustí poskytovatel internetového připojení, pokud sdílení ve své síti umožňuje.

Nový zákon, podobně jako český, zavádí daň z prázdných médií, mobilních telefonů, paměťových zařízení apod. Vybrané prostředky budou vyplaceny vlastníkům autorských práv. Bruselský viceprezident MPA (Motion Picture Association) Duncan Hudson považuje tuto novelu zákona za krok vpřed a věří, že bude MPA nápomocna s vedením soudních procesů. Španělská Telefónica uvádí, že P2P přenosy v její síti činí 71 % z celkového internetového trafficu.

A California history professor, Kathryn Olmstead, has discovered documents at the Gerald Ford library which were written by Cheney and Rumsfeld.

They show how far the White House went to conceal information about Olson’s death — and his role in preparing anthrax and other biological weapons. ...

Cheney and Rumsfeld were given the task of covering up the details of Frank Olson’s death. At the time, Rumsfeld was White House Chief of Staff to President Gerald Ford. Dick Cheney was a senior White House assistant.
