US official confirms Allawi shot six dead

A former Jordanian government minister has told The New Yorker that an American official confirmed to him that the Iraqi interim Prime Minister, Iyad Allawi, executed six suspected insurgents at a Baghdad police station last year.

The claim is in an extensive profile of Dr Allawi written for this week's issue of the magazine by an American journalist, Jon Lee Anderson, the author of The Fall of Baghdad and a regular Baghdad correspondent for The New Yorker.

Writing about his research in Jordan in December, Anderson says: "A well-known former government minister told me that an American official had confirmed that the killings took place, saying to him, 'What a mess we're in - we got rid of one son of a bitch only to get another one'."

The New Yorker also revealed that Anderson was present during an interview conducted by the Herald's chief correspondent, Paul McGeough, in late June, with a man who said he witnessed the executions by Dr Allawi.

Dr Allawi denied the allegations when they were published in the Herald last July.

Anderson writes: "The man ... described how Allawi had been taken to seven suspects, who were made to stand against a wall in a courtyard of the police station, their faces covered. After being told of their alleged crimes by a police official, Allawi had asked for a pistol, and then shot each prisoner in the head. [One of the men survived.] Afterward, the witness said, Allawi had declared to those present, 'This is how we must deal with the terrorists.' The witness said he approved of Allawi's act, adding that, in any case, the terrorists were better off dead, for they had been tortured for days."

WHAT nuclear threat? Nobody has proven that Iran is doing anything other than setting up a power plant. And even if Iran DID have nukes, they are not a threat to the US.

The United States has produced some 70,000 warheads since 1945, of which, 60,000 have been dismantled (if you believe the official story). As of the end of 2004, the US admits to having 7000 nuclear warheads in "Active" status, but this number does not include the new generation of tactical nuclear weapons authorized by President Bush.

So, why would Iran attack the United States? What possible threat is Iran to the United States when the United States can turn all of Iran into a gigantic solid glass radioactive parking lot?

Get real. Iran is no more a threat than Iraq was.

The President and his national-security advisers have consolidated control over the military and intelligence communities’ strategic analyses and covert operations to a degree unmatched since the rise of the post-Second World War national-security state. Bush has an aggressive and ambitious agenda for using that control—against the mullahs in Iran and against targets in the ongoing war on terrorism—during his second term. The C.I.A. will continue to be downgraded, and the agency will increasingly serve, as one government consultant with close ties to the Pentagon put it, as “facilitators” of policy emanating from President Bush and Vice-President Dick Cheney. This process is well under way.

“This is a war against terrorism, and Iraq is just one campaign. The Bush Administration is looking at this as a huge war zone,” the former high-level intelligence official told me. “Next, we’re going to have the Iranian campaign. We’ve declared war and the bad guys, wherever they are, are the enemy. This is the last hurrah—we’ve got four years, and want to come out of this saying we won the war on terrorism.”

Rumsfeld will become even more important during the second term. In interviews with past and present intelligence and military officials, I was told that the agenda had been determined before the Presidential election, and much of it would be Rumsfeld’s responsibility. The war on terrorism would be expanded, and effectively placed under the Pentagon’s control. The President has signed a series of findings and executive orders authorizing secret commando groups and other Special Forces units to conduct covert operations against suspected terrorist targets in as many as ten nations in the Middle East and South Asia.

In my interviews, I was repeatedly told that the next strategic target was Iran. “Everyone is saying, ‘You can’t be serious about targeting Iran. Look at Iraq,’” the former intelligence official told me. “But they say, ‘We’ve got some lessons learned—not militarily, but how we did it politically. We’re not going to rely on agency pissants.’ No loose ends, and that’s why the C.I.A. is out of there.”

Microchip to allow wallet-free drinking

A Scottish nightclub is about to become the first in Britain to offer its customers the chance to have a microchip implanted in their arm to save them carrying cash.

The "digital wallet", the size of a grain of rice, guarantees entry to the club and allows customers to buy drinks on account. Brad Stevens, owner of Bar Soba in Glasgow, said his customers had responded enthusiastically to the idea.

The VeriChip is inserted by a medical professional and then scanned for its unique ID number as a customer enters the bar.

"There are a number of advantages, from instant access, to not having to carry money or credit cards, to letting bar staff know a customer's name and favourite drink," said Mr Stevens. "By the time you walk through the door to the bar, your favourite drink is waiting for you and the bar staff can greet you by name."

However, he said the bar would also have to make sure that customers with the chip had a limit on how much they could spend to prevent them drinking beyond their ability to pay.

The scheme was criticised by a spokesman for the Scottish Executive, who said the microchip could encourage excessive drinking, and by Notags, a consumer group set up to resist the spread of radio frequency identification devices.

A spokesman said: "The chip contains your name and ID number and, as this could be read remotely without your knowledge, that is already too much information."

Prezident USA poskytl rozhovory stanicím CBS, ABC a NBC. O válce s Íránem hovořil v poslední jmenované.

Nezbude-li žádná jiná možnost, vyslal bych znovu vojenskou sílu na ochranu svých krajanů, řekl Bush v NBC. Dodal ale, že doufá, že to nebude nutné.

"Doufám, že to vyřešíme diplomatickou cestou, ale nechci se vzdávat žádného řešení," prohlásil Bush. Írán už dříve zařadil spolu s Irákem a Severní Koreou na tzv. osu zla.

Důvodem případného útoku by mohl být postoj Íránu k jaderné energii. "Pokud budou nadále mlžit před mezinárodním společenstvím o existenci programu jaderných zbraní," řekl Bush, za jakých podmínek by mohlo dojít k další invazi.

Bílý dům předtím ostře vystoupil proti článku novináře Seymoura Hershe v týdeníku New Yorker, v němž se hovoří o již probíhajících přípravách války v Íránu. - více zde

Americký prezident a jeho administrativa se k Hershovým zjištěním sice nepostavili vyloženě odmítavě, vyjádřili ale odpor nad relativizováním nebezpečí, které od Íránu hrozí.

"Íránský režim zaslouží mnohem víc pozornosti, než kolik Seymour Hersh naznačuje ve svém článku. Je to protkáno tolika faktickými chybami, že věrohodnost toho textu je veškerá žádná," rozčílil se mluvčí Pentagonu Lawrence DiRita.

Íránští představitelé nadále tvrdí, že všechna atomová energie, kterou se snaží vyvinout, má sloužit pouze na výrobu elektřiny, a nikoli pro válečné účely.

Americký deník The New York Times mezitím přinesl zprávu, že americké úřady potrestaly vysokou pokutu osm velkých čínských společností, které údajně Íránu pomáhaly v jeho úsilí zdokonalit střely středního doletu.

Skepse roste i v USA
Americký prezident se domnívá, že úspěch v listopadových volbách znamenal zároveň posvěcení jeho zahraniční politiky. Jenže Američané začínají být vůči irácké misi, která Bushovu mezinárodní politiku do značné míry určuje, skeptičtí.

Procento Američanů, kteří považují válku v Iráku za chybu, neustále roste. Lednové šetření Gallupova ústavu ukázalo, že s invazí nesouhlasí už 52 procent Američanů. Sedmačtyřicet procent respondentů uvedlo, že vyslání vojsk do Iráku bylo správné. V listopadu byl poměr obrácený.

Začíná doba nových koncentračních táboru ?

Dozvěděl jsem se, že v americkém listě Washington post vyšel článek, který se zabýval otázkou, kterou si položila americká vláda "co dělat, když neexistuje dostatek důkazů pro obvinění osob podezřelých z terorismu". Americká vláda přišla z novým nápadem. Poslat tyto lidi do speciálních táborů s názvem Tábor 6 a držet je tam tak dlouho jak bude třeba, třeba do doživotí.



Jedná se o případy, kdy neexistuje dostatek důkazů, které by obstály u soudu. Aby vláda zamezila nebezpečí, že podezřelí nebudou obviněni a budou puštěni na svobodu kde mohou dále protivládně působit , rozhodla se je prostě zavřít do táboru.

Návrh však nabízí nebezpečí, kterého by se měl bát každý demokratický stát. Držet někoho bez důkazů jen proto, že patří do skupiny, která má jinou pleť a náboženství mi trochu připomíná časy nacistického Německa.



Řekněme, že Vy nebo já jsme muslimové a v naší čtvrti exploduje nálož a budeme jako první podezřelí nebo dokonce jste se setkali s někým o kterém ani nevíte, že spolupracuje s teroristy. Bezpečnostní služby z toho vyvodí, že i vy jste se nějak podílel na této akci a pošlou vás do vazby a pro nedostatek důkazů vás budou muset pustit. Ale pozor, jsme "ve válce proti terorismu" a nový zákon umožní, že místo propuštění vás čeká Tábor 6, kde můžete zůstat po zbytek života.



Druhá věc je, že tento zákon umožní likvidovat osoby či skupiny, které jsou státu nebezpečné. Dnes mohou být na řadě muslimové, zítra třeba židé, komunisté a možná, že i křesťané. Každý systém, který se uchyluje k metodám zatýkání bez důkazů je předurčen k totalitě a nakonec pádu. Bohužel Amerika, kdysi symbol svobody nedokázala projít zkouškou demokracie v té nejtěžší chvíli a k zachování moci se uchýlila k totalitnímu systému.



Tábor 6 by měl komfortní povahu a detaily systému by měli být tajné. Vzpomínám si, jak židé cestovali do Osvětimi domnívající se, že jedou na východ, kde budou moci žít o mnohem lépe než v tehdejším Německu.
Místo toho je potkal osud v plynových komorách. Doufejme, že tato historie se nebude již nikdy opakovat.

Firma Monsanto žaluje farmáře za pirátství

"Semenářská policie" firmy Monsanto chytila do léčky farmáře Homana McFarlinga a firma nyní od něj požaduje stovky tisíc dolarů za údajné pirátství její technologie. Co McFarling provedl? Ponechal si část úrody na semena a ta vysadil příští rok.

"Dělal to můj otec, dělám to i já," řekl dvaašedesátiletý McFarling, který stále pěstuje soju na rodinné farmě s pozemky o rozloze 5000 akrů v Shannonu, stát Mississipi, a který se odvážil postavit se agrikulturálnímu gigantu.


Ponechání si části úrody ze semen, které Monsanto geneticky upravila, aby vzdorovaly vysokým dávkám pesticidů, je porušením smlouvy, kterou Monsanto s farmáři uzavřela.

Podle zprávy vydané Ústředím pro bezpečnost potravin (Center for Food Safety) podala firma od roku 1997 podobných žalob celkem 90 ve 25 státech. Žalováno bylo 147 farmářů a 39 agrikulurálních podniků.

V jiném případě, který se udal před rokem, byl odsouzen farmář z Tennesse Kem Ralph k osmi měsícům vězení. Byl přistižen při lži. Zapřel, že schoval jeden náklad bavlněných semen pro svého kamaráda.

Ralphův případ je zřejmě prvým z řady kriminálních případů, které jsou součástí rozsáhlé aktivity Monsanto zaměřených na zlomení farmářů. Soud Ralphovi nařídil zaplatit firmě 1,7 milionu dolarů.

Firma sama přiznává, že ročně vyšetřuje asi 500 udání týkajících se případů, kdy farmáři ilegálně používají její semena. V mnoha případech dochází k mimosoudnímu vyrovnání dříve, než se případ dostane k soudu.

Tímto způsobem se Monsanto snaží ochránit svůj byznys, a je to metoda podobná té, kterou používají nahrávací studia proti sdílení skladeb, video her a filmů.

V procesu slídění se jí daří rozeštvat farmáře mezi sebou navzájem. Posílá do malých měst soukromé vyšetřovatele, kteří se po straně dotazují přátel a spolupracovníků farmářů.

Postupem času, jak jsou geneticky modifikované plodiny stále šířejí vysazovány, jsou rovněž častěji kritizovány licenční a vyjednávací metody firmy Monsanto.

Podle nezávislé zprávy byla v minulém roce geneticky upravená semena vysazena na 200 milionech akrů půdy - je to ve srovnání s rokem 2003 dvacetiprocentní nárůst.

Mnoho farmářů, které firma Monsanto soudí, se brání tím, že nevěnovali velkou pozornost čtení technologické smlouvy. Jiní říkají, že ani žádnou nedostali.

Firma argumentuje tím, že používá tvrdé ruky jen v těch nejkřiklavějších případech, že chrání těch 300 tisíc slušných farmářů, kteří pravidelně odvádějí roční poplatky za její technologii. Např. pěstitelé soji platí z každého akru 6,5 dolaru ročně. Říká se tomu "technologický poplatek".

Na území celých Spojených států je dnes osázeno 85 % všech sojových polí geneticky modifikovanou plodinou odolnou proti herbicidu Roundup, rovněž produktu Monsanto. Mnoho farmářů se domnívá, že tato metoda odplevelení pole je snadnější a nakonec vyjde i levněji.

Monsanto zřídila horkou linku, kde mají lidé hlásit pravděpodobná podezření na pirátství farmářů, a doporučuje všem zainteresovaným, aby ji používalo. Rovněž soukromí vyšetřovatelé mají přímo ve smlouvě doporučení, aby při vyšetřování tipů hovořili s kolegy a spolupracovníky podezřelého farmáře.

"Je to smutné. Je mi z toho zle. Jsem znechucen," říká Rodeny Nelson, farmář ze severní Dakoty, který se v roce 2001 mimosoudně s Monsantem dohodl. Dodnes si myslí, že žaloba nebyla férová. "Před námi je zatraceně těžký boj, ve kterém na naší straně nejsou žádné výhody. Obávám se, že to nemůžeme vyhrát."

'I was MI5 go-between,' says Briton held in Guantanamo

A detainee in Guantanamo Bay with strong links to Britain has claimed he acted as a go-between for British intelligence and an alleged leading member of al-Qa'ida in London.

The claims come from Bisher al-Rawi, 37, who came to Britain as a teenage refugee but has been held in Cuba for more than two years as a suspected supporter of al-Qa'ida. He was seized by US intelligence agents on a business trip to Gambia in November 2002 because of his friendship with Abu Qatada, the militant Islamic cleric alleged to be al-Qa'ida's "spiritual leader" in Europe.

In testimony to a US military tribunal in Cuba seen by The Independent on Sunday, Mr Rawi claimed he had acted as an intermediary between Abu Qatada, a Palestinian refugee, and MI5. He named three MI5 agents, "Alex", "Matthew" and "Martin", and asked for them to be called as defence witnesses. Although the tribunal agreed, the British Government refused to allow them to give evidence.

It is thought that Mr Rawi's MI5 contacts took place while Abu Qatada was in hiding for nine months - in a safe house the detainee has admitted finding for him in London. Abu Qatada disappeared in December 2001, hours before the Government took controversial powers to detain foreign terror suspects without trial.

But Mr Rawi, whose close family are British citizens, vehemently rejected US allegations that he was an al-Qa'ida sympathiser.

His claims follow allegations, by Islamist militants as well as French security sources, that Abu Qatada had contacts with British intelligence, which the Palestinian strongly denies. His legal advisers are adamant that he was only questioned as part of routine attempts by MI5 to gather intelligence about Islamist groups in the UK.

In comments before 7,000 people attending the General Papal Audience yesterday at the Vatican, Pope John Paul II commented on the Apocalypse, saying that the increase in violence and injustice in the world is the work of a furious Satan who doesn't have "much time left" and ultimately will be defeated.

According to a report in the Italian website AGI online, the pope said, "God and the Lamb, Christ, surrounded by the 'Council of the Crown,' are judging human history in good and evil, but showing us however the ultimate end in salvation and glory. The songs which are found in the Apocalypse and which serve to illustrate the issue of divine glory which regulates the flux, often disconcerting, of the tide of human events."

The pope then predicts Satan's downfall:

"Satan, the original adversary, who accused our brothers in the heavenly court, has now been cast down from heaven and therefore no longer has great power. He knows he has not much time left because history is about to see a radical turning point in freedom from evil and therefore he is reacting full of great fury.

"And then the resurrected Christ will rise up, whose blood is the principle of salvation and who received from the Father royal power over the entire universe; in Him are centered salvation, strength and the kingdom of our God. In his victory are associated the Christian martyrs who chose the path of the cross, not yielding to evil and it virulence, but delivering themselves to the Father and uniting themselves to the death of Christ by means of a testimony of donation and courage which brought them to give up life in order to die."

Concluded the pope: "The words of the Apocalypse regarding those who have vanquished Satan and evil through the blood of the Lamb, echo also in the splendid prayer attributed to the Christian martyr Simeon, from Seleucia-Ctesifonte in Persia: 'I will receive life without pain, worry, anguish, persecutor, persecuted, oppressor, oppressed, tyrant or victim, there I will see no threat of king, or terror of prefects, no one will quote me in court or terrorize me and no one will drag me or scare me.'"

Železný: manýry v EP jako za komunismu

Otřesen prý byl ve středu český europoslanec Vladimír Železný (Nezávislí) při hlasování v EP jednáním ochranné služby. Ta podle něj fyzicky napadla tajemnici jednoho z britských poslanců, která při hlasování nesla transparent Ne mým jménem, patřící klubu Nezávislí/Demokraté.

Skupina britských konzervativců a Nezávislí/Demokraté budou podle něj protestovat a věří, že se přidají i další.

"To jsou manýry, o nichž i já jsem myslel, že po pádu komunismu se s nimi definitivně rozcházím. Teď sedím ve Štrasburku, a najednou narážím na úplně stejné," řekl Železný.

Obdobně podle něj pochodila i tajemnice z jeho klubu, která nesla v ruce své tričko s nápisem Ne mým jménem.

"Byl jsem u toho, když ji honila po budově ochranka a snažila se jí triko vyrvat. To je pro mne naprosto neakceptovatelné," dodal s tím, že ve Štrasburku prý byly povoleny pouze transparenty s nápisem ANO evropské ústavě.

"Připadal jsem si jako na oslavách 1. máje za komunismu," prohlásil.

Is Al Qaeda Just a Bush Boogeyman?

Is it conceivable that Al Qaeda, as defined by President Bush as the center of a vast and well-organized international terrorist conspiracy, does not exist?

To even raise the question amid all the officially inspired hysteria is heretical, especially in the context of the U.S. media's supine acceptance of administration claims relating to national security. Yet a brilliant new BBC film produced by one of Britain's leading documentary filmmakers systematically challenges this and many other accepted articles of faith in the so-called war on terror.

"The Power of Nightmares: The Rise of the Politics of Fear," a three-hour historical film by Adam Curtis recently aired by the British Broadcasting Corp., argues coherently that much of what we have been told about the threat of international terrorism "is a fantasy that has been exaggerated and distorted by politicians. It is a dark illusion that has spread unquestioned through governments around the world, the security services and the international media."

Stern stuff, indeed. But consider just a few of the many questions the program poses along the way:

• If Osama bin Laden does, in fact, head a vast international terrorist organization with trained operatives in more than 40 countries, as claimed by Bush, why, despite torture of prisoners, has this administration failed to produce hard evidence of it?

• How can it be that in Britain since 9/11, 664 people have been detained on suspicion of terrorism but only 17 have been found guilty, most of them with no connection to Islamist groups and none who were proven members of Al Qaeda?

• Why have we heard so much frightening talk about "dirty bombs" when experts say it is panic rather than radioactivity that would kill people?

• Why did Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld claim on "Meet the Press" in 2001 that Al Qaeda controlled massive high-tech cave complexes in Afghanistan, when British and U.S. military forces later found no such thing?

Of course, the documentary does not doubt that an embittered, well-connected and wealthy Saudi man named Osama bin Laden helped finance various affinity groups of Islamist fanatics that have engaged in terror, including the 9/11 attacks. Nor does it challenge the notion that a terrifying version of fundamentalist Islam has led to gruesome spates of violence throughout the world. But the film, both more sober and more deeply provocative than Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11," directly challenges the conventional wisdom by making a powerful case that the Bush administration, led by a tight-knit cabal of Machiavellian neoconservatives, has seized upon the false image of a unified international terrorist threat to replace the expired Soviet empire in order to push a political agenda.

Terrorism is deeply threatening, but it appears to be a much more fragmented and complex phenomenon than the octopus-network image of Al Qaeda, with Bin Laden as its head, would suggest.

While the BBC documentary acknowledges that the threat of terrorism is both real and growing, it disagrees that the threat is centralized:

"There are dangerous and fanatical individuals and groups around the world who have been inspired by extreme Islamist ideas and who will use the techniques of mass terror — the attacks on America and Madrid make this only too clear. But the nightmare vision of a uniquely powerful hidden organization waiting to strike our societies is an illusion. Wherever one looks for this Al Qaeda organization, from the mountains of Afghanistan to the 'sleeper cells' in America, the British and Americans are chasing a phantom enemy."

The fact is, despite the efforts of several government commissions and a vast army of investigators, we still do not have a credible narrative of a "war on terror" that is being fought in the shadows.

Consider, for example, that neither the 9/11 commission nor any court of law has been able to directly take evidence from the key post-9/11 terror detainees held by the United States. Everything we know comes from two sides that both have a great stake in exaggerating the threat posed by Al Qaeda: the terrorists themselves and the military and intelligence agencies that have a vested interest in maintaining the facade of an overwhelmingly dangerous enemy.

Such a state of national ignorance about an endless war is, as "The Power of Nightmares" makes clear, simply unacceptable in a functioning democracy.

George Bush - prezident fiktivních krizí

Tento prezidentský úřad, více než který jiný, využívá klasických nástrojů propagandy. Je téměř nemožné si představit Bushův prezidentský úřad bez televize Fox News a pravicových rozhlasových stanic.

Prezidentem vymyšlených, fiktivních krizí, nazval George W. Bushe ve čtvrtek americký deník Washington Post:

Až budou zpětně historikové hodnotit Bushův prezidentský úřad, nejpravděpodobněji si povšimnou, že to, čím se Bush mladší odlišuje od ostatních amerických prezidentů, nejsou krize, které zvládl, ale krize, které si vymyslel. Charakteristickým rysem Bushova prezidentského úřadu jsou fiktivní krize. Ve snaze dosáhnout cílů, které si určil, než převzal úřad - totiž svržení Saddáma Husajna a privatizaci amerického sociálního zabezpečení - si George W. Bush vymyslel krize tam, kde žádné neexistovaly.

A tak se Irák stal jasným a bezprostředním nebezpečím pro americké domovy a krby, ježil se zbraněmi hromadného ničení, jaderný útok byl otázkou pár minut.

Vzhledem k tomu, že zamlžování skutečností a fikce je tak důležitou metodou Bushovy vlády, je snad překvapením, že americké státní úřady nyní natáčejí "vládní informační reportáže", které předstírají, že jsou skutečnými, nezávislými televizními reportážemi, s falešnými reportéry, a nabízejí je lokálním televizním stanicím?

Je snad překvapením, že americké ministerstvo školství zaplatilo známému televiznímu komentátoru Armstrongu Williamsovi 241 000 dolarů, aby šířil ve svých pořadech jeho propagandu? Za Bushova prezidentství je úkolem každého státního úřadu šířit probushovské zpravodajství, jakýmikoliv prostředky.

Bush je výjimečným americkým prezidentem v tom smyslu, že investuje veškerou svou energii do šíření dezinformací - a je mu absolutně jedno, jak hrozivě škodlivý dopad má tato propaganda na demokracii. To mu jistě vyslouží místo v americké historii, uzavírá deník.

Fox, CNN, MSNBC - All of you should be ashamed of yourselves. For MONTHS there was day to day coverage of 'what could their weapons do' and 'how far can they strike'... 'are they a threat to the US' - all the messages the Bush administration WANTED you to hear. Did they stop to actually investigate it? No. All they were doing was repeating a lie, and doing so in a manner that made MILLIONS of Americans feel threatened by "WMD" - the imminent "mushroom cloud" that was going to appear over Your City, USA.

Where is the credibility? How did internet bloggers and writers know what corporate media didn't? Maybe it's their spending and research budgets. (Insert Laugh) Billions in corporate dollars versus pocket change and common sense. How much sense does that make?

NOT FUNNY BUSH



I think we all remember this - At a black-tie dinner for journalists, Mr Bush narrated a slide show poking fun at himself and other members of his administration. One pictured Mr Bush looking under a piece of furniture in the Oval Office, at which the president remarked: "Those weapons of mass destruction have got to be here somewhere." After another one, showing him scouring the corner of a room, Mr Bush said: "No, no weapons over there," he said. And as a third picture, this time showing him leaning over, appeared on the screen the president was heard to say: "Maybe under here?"

Well I'm not Laughing. Families of those serving in Iraq aren't laughing. The thousands of dead civilians certainly aren't laughing.

Ignoring the fact that the war is still raging well past a year after it was declared "mission accomplished", there ARE no WMDs, there is no evidence that Iraq had anything to do with 9-11, and the torture scandal (and other widespread abuse) has made the United States the most despised nation on Earth. How do we pay back the world? We elect (thanks Diebold) Bush for a second term. Smooth.

Syn železné lady přiznal účast na převratu

Syn bývalé britské premiérky Margaret Thatcherové se u jihoafrického soudu přiznal, že pomáhal financovat převrat v Rovníkové Guineji. Mark Thatcher musí zaplatit pokutu půl milionu dolarů. Jeho případ tím ale nekončí, čeká ho projednání dalších žalob.

Soud Thatcherovi předem slíbil, že v případě přiznání vyvázne s pokutou a nebude muset do vězení.

Syn železné lady musí zaplatit tři miliony randů, což je v přepočtu asi jedenáct a půl milionu korun. "Pokud peníze včas neuhradí, bude mu hrozit pět let za mřížemi," řekl soudce Abe Motala z Kapského Města.

Thatcher u soudu uvedl, že zaplatil vzbouřencům v Rovníkové Guineji armádní helikoptéru. Údajně se domníval, že bude použita na humanitární účely.

Slavná britská politička přijala verdikt nad svým synem s uspokojením. "Velmi se jí ulevilo, když se celý problém usadil a obavy z posledních měsíců utichly," komentoval tiskový mluvčí Margaret Thatcherové.

Mark Thatcher se nyní může vypravit za svou rodinou do Spojených států, do 18. února ale musí podat vysvětlení úřadům v Rovníkové Guineji. Nevelká země se značnými zásobami ropy ho viní z podpory politického puče.

Thatcher kvůli tomu ještě jednou stane i před soudem v Jihoafrické republice. Porušil totiž její zákon o mezinárodní vojenské pomoci. Líčení je naplánováno na 8. dubna.

Jihoafrická policie zatkla Thatchera loni v srpnu. Byl podezřelý, že pomáhal žoldákům, kteří plánovali svržení prezidenta Rovníkové Guineje. Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo v zemi vládne už pětadvacet let

Američtí experti se vrátili v tichosti už před Vánocemi Kvůli násilí v Iráku a nedostatku nových informací skončila před Vánocemi v tichosti a bez výsledků mise amerických zbrojních expertů, kteří se snažili najít zbraně hromadného ničení, kvůli nimž prezident George W. Bush v březnu 2003 zahájil válku.

WASHINGTON - Listu The Washington Post vše pod podmínkou anonymity ve středu potvrdil činitel Ústřední zpravodajské služby (CIA). Podle něho šéf expertů Charles A. Duelfer v podstatě jen opráší zprávu s negativními závěry, kterou předložil loni 30. září.

CIA oficiálně nepotvrdila ukončení zátahu na irácké arzenály, které údajně hromadil bývalý diktátor Saddám Husajn, ale její zdroje podle listu WP potvrdily, že Duelfer v Bagdádu skončil a nebude nahrazen.

Zbrojní experti podle nich vyslechli každého, kdo měl co do činění se zbrojními programy Bagdádu, a prohlédli všechny lokality, kde arzenály mohly být.

Družicové snímky údajně dokazují, že některá zařízení byla vykradena a demontována patrně překupníky. Pro účely mise řízené Pentagonem vyčlenil Kongres podle deníku WP stovky miliónů dolarů, ale jejich vynaložení prý nebude veřejně vykázáno, ale zůstane utajeno. Potvrdil to i mluvčí vojenské rozvědky DIA.
