Family Terrorized After Fox News Wrongly IDs Them As Terrorists

LA HABRA, Calif. -- A couple whose home was wrongly identified on national television as belonging to an Islamic radical has faced harassment, and police are providing special protection.

After the report ran on Fox News on Aug. 7, people have shouted profanities at Randy and Ronnell Vorick and spray-painted "terrorist" (spelling it "terrist") on their property.

"I'm scared to go to work and leave my kids home. I call them every 30 minutes to make sure they're OK," Randy Vorick said. John Loftus, a former federal prosecutor who appears on the Fox News segment "Inside Scoop with John Loftus," gave out the house address during the broadcast.

He said the home belonged to Iyad Hilal, whose group, Loftus said, has ties to those responsible for the July 7 bombings in London. But Hilal moved out of the house about three years ago.

Police have patrolled their house since the day after the broadcast and now have a squad car across the street. Police Capt. John Rees said the department was "giving special attention to the family to make sure they're safe."

The couple sought a public apology and correction. "John Loftus has been reprimanded for his careless error, and we sincerely apologize to the family," said Fox spokeswoman Irena Brigante.

Loftus also apologized and told the Los Angeles Times last week that "mistakes happen. ... That was the best information we had at the time."

The FBI has launched an inquiry into the activities of Hilal, a grocery store owner who is allegedly the U.S. leader of Hizb ut-Tahrir, which has been banned in parts of Europe and the Middle East.

Hilal, 56, is apparently not suspected of any terrorist acts, but FBI terrorism investigators want to know more about his and the group's activities.

Italy plans Iraq troop pull-out

Italy is to begin withdrawing its troops from Iraq in September 2005, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has said.

He told Rai state television the pullout would take place "in agreement with our allies".

Italy has 3,000 troops in Iraq - the fourth largest foreign contingent.

Threat to Vatican in Arabic fax is investigated

The Italian authorities are investigating a fax, allegedly signed by al-Qaida, which makes veiled threats against the Vatican.

The three-page document, written in Arabic, accuses the Vatican of supporting "the capitalist countries" who joined the war in Iraq and justifies terror attacks in Britain and Spain as "self defence against terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan".

The fax was sent in Barcelona to the offices of the Spanish conservative daily newspaper ABC and to a Spanish television station.

The interior ministry in Rome confirmed yesterday that it had been informed of the contents of the fax. "We are aware of it but we have no comment to make," a source at the ministry said. The Vatican also refused to comment.

The threats are bound to increase nerves in Italy, which has long feared it could be the next European country to be targeted by Islamists because of the government's support of the Iraq war. Italy maintains the third-largest contingent of US-led troops in Iraq.

Bus bomber stopped for a Big Mac before killing started

Suicide bomber Hasib Hussain ate a last meal at McDonald's before blowing up the No. 30 bus on 7 July, killing 13 people.

Hussain also made a number of telephone calls, at least one of which was to one of his fellow bombers, before carrying out his attack on the bus which exploded in Tavistock Square in central London. There were reports last night he may also have spoken to the other two bombers.

The final minutes of the 18-year-old from Holbeck in Leeds are believed to have been captured by a CCTV camera as he entered the fast food outlet after coming out of King's Cross station. Detectives have been attempting to piece together Hussain's "missing hour" between the moment he split up from his fellow bombers at King's Cross and got on the bus. The bus bomb exploded almost an hour after the three Tube bombs.

In particular they have been trying to ascertain whether Hussain may have met up with any "fixers" who helped in the multiple bombings which led to the deaths of 52 people.

There appears to be no evidence Hussain met anyone else during his visit to McDonald's and it is, as yet, unclear which route he took to his target.

Comment: A portrait of a really hardcore Muslim fundamentalist who hates Western values, visiting McDonald's before 'blowing himself up'. That's exactly what I'd do before bombing a bus, buy a Big Mac. These guys were clearly dupes who thought they were part of a drill. Clear bags 'to ease Tube fears'

It is hoped the plastic rucksacks will ease Tube commuters' fears

A range of see-through rucksacks and cases have been launched for Tube users in an attempt to reduce fear in the wake of the London bomb attacks.

The Freedom Bags, which are made out of clear vinyl, are being sold on the internet by the Assist Safety Project, a private, non-profit organisation.

The company hopes that seeing the bag's contents will assure commuters that it does not contain explosives.

It plans to donate any profits made to the London Bombings Relief Fund.

Bob Fitzjohn, director of the Assist Safety Project, said the company wants to give the public back the confidence needed to travel on the London Underground again.

"If we all carry a bag that poses no threat whilst travelling on public transport, visiting a football or rugby match or just in a department store, we are giving the message that we are prepared to let others know that we're not a threat," he said.

"Sometimes the perception of danger can be more frightening than the danger itself."

"USA musejí zabránit Venezuele stát se odpalovací rampou pro komunistický vliv a muslimský extremismus. Nepotřebujeme novou válku za 200 miliard dolarů, abychom se zbavili dalšího násilnického diktátora... Je mnohem snazší svěřit tuto práci tajným agentům," řekl Robertson. Venezuelské úřady to v úterý ostře kritizovaly a uvedly, že se jedná o "teroristické prohlášení" a že by případ měl být vyšetřen.

Robertsonovy poznámky nicméně pravděpodobně ještě prohloubí krizi mezi Washingtonem a Caracasem, který je pátým největším vývozcem ropy na světě.

Venezuelský viceprezident José Vicente Rangel podotkl, že reakce Spojených států na skandál bude testem jejich protiteroristické politiky. "Míč je po tomto zločinném prohlášení amerického občana na straně USA," konstatoval. "Je nesmírně pokrytecké nadále hřímat proti terorismu a zároveň trpět v srdci země takováto teroristická prohlášení," dodal.

Naopak Chávez se výrokem evangelického kazatele nenechal vyvést z míry. "Ani za mák mi ezáleží na tom, co říkají," reagoval na aféru venezuelský prezident na havanském letišti po boku svého blízkého přítele, kubánského vůdce Fidela Castra na závěr své návštěvy Kuby.

Chávez je jedním z nejhalasnějších kritiků amerického prezidenta George Bushe. Spojené státy obviňuje, že se snaží svrhnout venezuelskou vládu a možná podporují plány na atentát proti němu.

Bus bomber phoned attackers on Tube

The July 7 bus bomber frantically phoned his fellow suicide attackers only minutes after they exploded their devices on three London Tube trains, it has emerged.

Hasib Hussain, 18, tried to call his accomplices around 9am, but was met with silence because they had already killed themselves and dozens of innocent people in a near simultaneous attack at 8.50am.

The media is trying to spin this as proof they knowingly set off their bombs, but in truth it proves the exact opposite. If Hasib KNEW of a plan to set off all the bombs at 8:50, then there would be no reason for him to even dial the numbers of his accomplices. On the other hand, if he has heard reports of explosions in the tube, he might be trying to call his friends to see if they were okay, and getting no answer, start to realize that something was funny with the "fake" bombs they had been hired to carry for the "terror drill".

Second Officer Says 9/11 Leader Was Named Before Attacks

WASHINGTON, Aug. 22 - An active-duty Navy captain has become the second military officer to come forward publicly to say that a secret intelligence program tagged the ringleader of the Sept. 11 attacks as a possible terrorist more than a year before the attacks.

The officer, Scott J. Phillpott, said in a statement on Monday that he could not discuss details of the military program, which was called Able Danger, but confirmed that its analysts had identified the Sept. 11 ringleader, Mohamed Atta, by name by early 2000. "My story is consistent," said Captain Phillpott, who managed the program for the Pentagon's Special Operations Command. "Atta was identified by Able Danger by January-February of 2000."

A Jewish group has filed a complaint to the University of Ottawa against one of its professors after the discovery of content on his website that blames Jews for the terrorist attacks on the United States, and claims the numbers who died at Auschwitz are exaggerated.

Though full details of the administration’s policy on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are still forthcoming, the statement by President Hugo Chavez will lead most immediately to the cancellation of a contract that Venezuela had negotiated with the US-based Monsanto Corporation.

“I ordered an end to the project”, said Chavez, upon learning that transgenic crops were involved. “This project is terminated.”

Chavez emphasised the importance of food sovereignty and security — required by the Venezuelan Constitution — as the basis of his decision. Instead of allowing Monsanto to grow its transgenic crops, these fields will be used to plant yuca, an indigenous crop, Chavez explained. He also announced the creation of a large seed bank facility to maintain indigenous seeds for peasants’ movements around the world.

“If we want to achieve food sovereignty, we cannot rely on transnationals like Monsanto”, said Maximilien Arvelaiz, an adviser to Chavez. “We need to strengthen local production, respecting our heritage and diversity.”

Alegria hopes that Venezuela’s move will serve as encouragement to other nations contemplating how to address the issue of GMOs.
