"Militarism in East/Central Europe: pressure and resistance
(presentation+discussion+zine in progress)
With the ongoing war in Eastern Ukraine, militarist atmosphere is
looming all over East and Central Europe. džp, who comes from a
collective in Kaunas, will talk about how it affects Lithuanian
millieu, as in:
* sudden return of military conscription and tremendously increased
"defense" budget
* daily "Russian scare" in the media, turning the question from "if"
to "when Russia attacks"
* "soft" repression and censorship of dissenting voices – such as
labour unions or informal political entities – by the state, poised as
"tackling the Russian threat"
* rise of "obligatory unity" among those who perceive themselves as
Lithuanian or European and another chance for schisms among those
involved in emancipatory politics
When it comes to thinking militarism and resistance to it, it must also
always be connected to other material realities of late capitalism in
East/Central Europe: austerity politics (justified by war scare),
historical quazi-colonial situation (East-Central Europe as the "buffer
zone" for either NATO or Russia), patriarchy ("real men defend their
families"), even liberal boredom (lack of actual local politics is
easily translated to taking sides in distant conflicts)...
On the one hand, East/Central Europe is quite a diverse region, the
borders of which are, as usual, drawn arbitrarily and from above. On
the other hand, (to some extent) shared past and subaltern politics on
the level of states (i.e., the absurd "transition" to capitalism and
liberal democracy), also positioned us on a common ground.
From Kaunas to Romania, džp is looking for common and diverse
points and positions, analyses, suggestions and inspiration, that would
turn into future action. The result of presentations and discussions
could/should/would be a collaboration on an anti-military zine published
by different East-Central voices – at least."
