Fury as travellers set up illegal camp

VILLAGERS were left fuming after finding that travellers had again set up an illegal camp on their doorstep.
Two travellers’ camps were last year blamed for rubbish being dumped in a stream in Rhydymwyn which cost hundreds of pounds to clean up.
Travellers have now returned and set up on the village’s Antelope Industrial Estate, near Mold.
They took seven caravans there on Wednesday night, having been booted off council land at Greenfield near Holywell by Flintshire County Council.
They are squatting on council-owned roads leading into the privately-owned industrial estate where the developers are still trying to let some of the units.
Rhydymwyn community councillor Diane Johnson said travellers claimed they were directed to the site by the county council – which the authority denies.
She said the company which owns the estate spent hundreds of pounds clearing up after last year’s illegal travellers’ camps.
A spokeswoman for Flintshire County Council said the authority obtained an eviction notice on January 5 to remove the travellers from Greenfield and a bailiff served it on January 19.
Travellers challenged the order in court and applied to have it suspended and the court agreed it should be actioned today but the travellers moved of their own accord on Wednesday evening.
“The council was unaware of their intention to move from the Greenfield site.
“Whilst discussions have been taking place to identify a more appropriate temporary site no suggestion, let alone direction, has been made by the council that they move to Rhydymwyn,” said the spokeswoman.
