dear Julian, this morning I participated in a
demonstration for your freedom. In the city’s main
square, activists protesting against your detention
have built a sort of cell, symbol of where you are
forced to live. All around the wood cell they put
billboards with your quotes on them. Phrases about
democracy, freedom, justice and peace. Values you
have held onto for a lifetime.
I remember our meetings at the Ecuadorian Embassy,
five or six years ago. I remember we talked about your
cat, and the tortellini Claudia bought for you. And we
talked about democracy and freedom of expression. I
told you I never trusted those fake words. You
responded that your faith in democracy and liberty
was intact, despite the most undeserved detention of
all time.
I think you are a victim of your own democratic
beliefs. Power (national states, big corporations,
military-industrial complex) is entirely indifferent to
those values, despite all the talk.
For the sake of freedom of expression the West is at
war against authoritarian nations, but this is not the
latest falsehood: detaining a journalist who has done
his job in the most honest way is proof of the
authoritarianism of nation states british and american
nali getting revenge on yours honesty.
You reported crimes and the criminals are punishing
you.
You practiced the principles of free expression and the
power is punishing you for not being obscene.
If I look at how the world has evolved in the past few
years, I have to confess that I've lost all hope. I never
believed in freedom and democracy like you. I know
that only the organized force of workers can protect
society from fascism.
Unfortunately workers have lost the strength of
solidarity and fascism prevails everywhere. Fascism,
war, racism prevail everywhere. Your detention is
evidence of the intolerable cynicism of those who
pretend to be custodians of democracy values.
