Patience and Pole Dancing...
I've been on tour now for about 4 weeks. I've noticed something different about the students I have in my workshops this time around... Students seem to be feeling more pressure to get better - faster.
A few times now, at the end of a workshop, students have approached me to ask why it is that they just can't do a certain move. They tell me about how frustrated they feel that they just aren't strong or flexible enough, and that they feel like the other students are progressing much faster than they do. When I ask them how long they've been pole dancing for, they all respond with "less than a year".
POLE DANCERS OF THE WORLD! When I first started pole dancing, about 7 years ago, there were no fonjis/handsprings/deadlifts/rainbow marchenkos... The girls in my pole class and I spent the first 3 years of our pole training perfecting our inversions, spins, shoulder mounts, extended butterflys, floorwork, dance and transitions. We worked hard to make the basic moves perfect, and beautiful. We practiced hard to build control and fluidity.
In the past 3-4 years the pole world has simply exploded. Don't let the craziness of the pole tricks frighten or dishearten you! Pole dance is about dance, expression, fun, freedom, strength, confidence, joy and self-confidence. It's not a race. Go at your own pace, work slowly and steadily, and when you feel down, it might help you to remember these things about my own personal experience of pole:
1. It took me a year to get my handspring/static V
2. I couldn't touch my toes when I first started pole dance
3. My back was a block of wood and I had to stretch for years to get it where it was today
4. I couldn't lift my own body weight when I first started pole
5. I FELL IN LOVE WITH POLE DANCING BECAUSE IT MADE ME FEEL AMAZING AND STRONG AND SEXY AND I WILL NEVER LET THAT CHANGE!!
So go forth and dance your heart out
