    Faust - IV (1973)

In a decade readily identified with flamboyance, the minimalist album cover for krautrock group Faust's fourth offering prepares you for the difficult, contrarian music inside. Several versions exist, but the key image is always the same; two columns of blank musical staves. A bold mission statement and a striking cover.

    Peter Gabriel - 1, 2, 3
Peter Gabriel produced three funky, angular albums between 1977 and 1980 sharing the same bare typography, the same eponymous title and similar, striking portraiture.

1 (Car) (1977) - Another Hipgnosis creation, the spot colour on Peter Gabriel 1 was achieved by layered exposure of monochrome and colour negatives. Photoshopping before Photoshop, in other words.

2 (Scratch) (1978) - In “Scratch”: Gabriel’s outstretched fingers tear away the cover. This is a 35mm black and white still, with torn strips of paper glued on top. It was then re-photographed; the new shot was meticulously tippexed to disguise the rougher joins. It was then photographed yet again to produce the end result. Today, a similar effect would involve a basic design program and a lot of messing around, but it could never achieve the same result.

3 (Melt) (1980) - The photo was taken with a Polaroid SX-70 instant camera. The sleeve's designer Storm Thorgerson said: "Peter himself joined with us at Hipgnosis in disfiguring himself by manipulating Polaroids as they 'developed'… Peter impressed us greatly with his ability to appear in an unflattering way, preferring the theatrical or artistic to the cosmetic."

MDC - Millions of Dead Cops (1982)

Carlos Lowry designed this cover for radical San Francisco punks MDC's debut, based on a mural by Raul Valdez in Austin, TX. Though MDC was a ferocious presence, they were also quite thoughtful in their approach, which extended to their album arts, seen in this anti-facist image that somehow recalls the populism of Warhol and the style of Lichtenstein. This album, together with the "John Wayne Was a Nazi" single, is considered a hardcore punk classic.

The Beatles - The Beatles (1968) aka The White Album

The album's sleeve was designed by Richard Hamilton, a notable pop artist who had organised a Marcel Duchamp retrospective at the Tate Gallery the previous year. Hamilton's design was in stark contrast to Peter Blake's vivid cover art for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and consisted of a plain white sleeve. The band's name was discreetly embossed slightly below the middle of the album's right side, and the cover also featured a unique stamped serial number, "to create," in Hamilton's words, "the ironic situation of a numbered edition of something like five million copies."
Indeed, the artist intended the cover to resemble the "look" of conceptual art, an emerging movement in contemporary art at the time. Later vinyl record releases in the US showed the title in grey printed (rather than embossed) letters. Early copies on compact disc were also numbered. Later CD releases rendered the album's title in black or grey.

    Tame Impala - Lonerism (2012)

Australian artist Leif Podhajsky created the artwork for Lonerism, after he had created the artwork for Innerspeaker and its singles. The image for Lonerism was personally taken by Parker with a Diana F camera and edited by Podhajsky. Lonerism features a vintage image of the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris, France. This image ties into the themes of isolation of Lonerism with a metal gate separating the viewer from the people in the Gardens. The red splotch in the corner of the image was actually an error caused by Parker incorrectly winding the film.

Aardvark - Anti Concept (EP, The Album, 2011)

The third album from Aardvarck, on Eat Concrete Records, is a white vinyl with a picture cover. The artwork is by Jar Moff, with additional artwork by Evan Odd & Pete Concrete, and follows the idea of complex ambient soundscapes with Detroit Techno and dub edges. They are illustrated with this photographic collage of landscape images.

Die Alten Maschinen - Songs about Love and Machines (Volume 1, 2 - 2010)

"Die Alten Maschinen jsou ideologicky projektem o strojích, které jsou člověku přátelské. O technologiích, které nejsou hrozbou, ale mají lidstvu především sloužit a pomáhat. Je to také pocta všem snílkům, vynálezcům a spisovatelům prvních idealistických sci-fi, kdy snít o budoucnosti bylo přece ještě tak krásné."

Za projektem stojí Moimir Papalescu a Petr Venkrbec, dále kanadský zpěvák a bubeník Leon Stevenson z novovlnných The Extras a Gerald V. Casale, lídr legendární americké skupiny DEVO. Obal desek má na svědomí výtvarník Adolf Lachman http://adolflachman.cz/cs/ .

    Iggy Pop - Préliminaires (2009)

Préliminaires is a 2009 album by Iggy Pop, released in 2009, and inspired by Michel Houellebecq's novel La Possibilité d'une île (The Possibility of an Island). The visuals for the album were created by French-Iranian graphic novelist and animated film director Marjane Satrapi. Marjane and Iggy met when she asked him to voice one of the characters in the English language version of her Academy-award nominated movie Persepolis in 2007. When it was reviewed in Rolling Stone magazine, they called it "definitely the weirdest record of the punk godfather's career".

    Lvmen - Heron (2008)

Písně pražské post hardcore / sludge kapely Lvmen, založené v roce 1995, staví temné, monumentální zvukové stěny a boří je atmosférickými instrumentálními mezihrami. Často samplují sekvence filmů 60.let, a to především od Františka Vláčila, což se stalo typické pro jejich projev.
Obal desky Heron byl proveden technikou parciálního laku.

Talking Heads – Remain in Light (1980)

The cover art was conceived by Weymouth and Frantz with the help of Massachusetts Institute of Technology researcher Walter Bender and his MIT Media Lab team. Using Melody Attack as inspiration, the couple created a collage of red warplanes flying in formation over the Himalayas. The planes are an artistic depiction of Grumman Avenger planes in honour of Weymouth's father who was a US Navy Admiral.
The idea for the back cover included simple portraits of the band members. Weymouth attended MIT regularly during the summer of 1980 and worked with Bender's colleague, Scott Fisher, on the computer renditions of the ideas. The process was tortuous because computer power was limited in the early 1980s and the mainframe alone took up several rooms. Weymouth and Fisher shared a passion for masks and used the concept to experiment with the portraits. The faces (except for eyes, noses and mouths) were blotted out with blocks of red colour. Weymouth considered superimposing Eno's face on top of all four portraits to insinuate his egotism—the producer wanted to be on the cover art together with Talking Heads—but decided against it in the end.
