He and his twin sister Cirila were born on july 6th 1948, as illegitimate children at Planina nad Horjulom, Yugoslavia, now Slovenia. Due to being a son of an already married man, his mother tried to hide him from the world. he learned to talk and walk at the age of 4. At the age of 14 he is said to have burned down his neighbor's hay, and there were several reports on animal cruelty- he had a habit of killing the stray cats & dogs but hasn't started his killings until 1976, when in span of 2 years, he raped, strangled and then burned at least 5 women in his masonry oven.
His first victim was a troubled 19-year old girl, that spent a lot of her youth in correctional homes. He met her in a local bar, and took her to his isolated house at Dolenja vas no.22. There he raped, strangled and then burnt her in his masonry oven. He later recalled during his trial: "she was screaming when I started to strangle her, so I stuffed her in the oven. I went out for extra wood, so the fire would not stop. She burnt for at least 4 hours". His second victim was a 52-year old woman, who he again picked up in a bar, where she was last seen alive. Her coat was later found at his twin sister's home, he gave it to her as a gift. The third victim was a 20-year old girl, who according to trial notes, had mental disabilities. They met when she had missed her train/bus. He took her to his home, and as he later said: I made her a cup of coffee, I didn't mean to kill her but when i grabbed her neck, she started screaming, and I started screaming too, of excitement. He kept her hand bag with keys. From his fourth victim he kept her scarf, and a ceramic pen. His last reported victim was his long term acquaintance, with whom he had occasional encounters. Her friend later remembered, that she confided in him, that Trobec behaves strangely and she is afraid for her life.
Trobec was caught by coincidence in 1978, when he tried to rob a german tourist near Ljubljana, and the tourist remembered the registry plates of his red colored zastava 101. Police traced the car to his home, where they were in for a gruesome surprise, they found remains of human skeletons in his oven, and backyard. They were able to link the victims to him based on all the trophies he had kept, namely all the victims' ID cards. Trobec was sentenced to death (the last death sentence in Slovenia), but this was commuted to 20 years in prison. During his imprisonment he tried to kill fellow prisoners twice, and 15 years were added to his sentence. While in prison, he and his fellow inmates used to make the lavender moth protector bags, that were later sold allover Yugoslavia. Psychiatrists believed that his obsessive fixation on his mother and her vast disinterest in him might have been the cause of his maniac behavior. During trial he commented on a relationship he had with his mother, saying: my mother Marija was the closest woman to me, even though she never had time for me. I was her right hand, the only person who truly helped her around the house. There is no more important woman for me in my whole life. He committed suicide in prison on 20 May 2006, shortly after his mother had died. His relatives didn't claim the body, so he was buried at state expense in an anonymous grave.
