YaleNews | Scientists spot two galaxies moving into the Milky Way from the cosmic countryside
    http://news.yale.edu/2016/08/11/scientists-spot-two-galaxies-moving-milky-way-cosmic-countryside

Researchers have found two, faint dwarf galaxies that traveled from the remote hinterlands of space to the brighter lights of the more “cosmopolitan” Milky Way.

Yale astronomy professor Marla Geha, former Yale postdoctoral fellow Erik Tollerud, and their colleagues made the discovery by analyzing images taken by NASA’s
Hubble Space Telescope. The two galaxies, Pisces A and Pisces B, are valuable proxies for understanding how earlier galaxies ramped up their star formation
    activities, the researchers said.

“Large galaxies in our universe form primarily by accumulating and merging with smaller galaxies,” Geha said. “Our Milky Way is growing in mass as smaller galaxies
fall in from lower density regions. That is to say, the Milky Way grows as smaller galaxies move in from the cosmic countryside. The two galaxies presented in this
paper show increased star formation, which is further evidence they are moving from the void into a higher density region.”

The study appears in the Aug. 11 issue of The Astrophysical Journal.

A new model of the impact that created the moon might upend theories about earth, too
    http://www.smithsonianmag.com/...formation-theory-also-raises-questions-about-early-earth-180960077/

A new theory about how the moon formed might also tweak our understanding of early life on Earth.

The presence of gold and platinum in Earth's mantle has previously been assumed to be the result of a heavy shower of meteors raining down
on early Earth, but new research suggests another source—one enormous impact with the object that crashed into the planet to create the moon.

Around 4 billion years ago the Earth was under constant attack, according to geophysicists. Asteroids and meteors continuously smashed into the
planet for about 100 million years, a period known as the Late Heavy Bombardment. Any life on the planet at that time would be in constant peril.

On the weekend of July 30th, Max and Aidan made observations of our favourite calibrator field (B1934-638) for a long 11 hours
with all 12 ADE antennas functional for the entire duration of the observation. The data quality is impressive and 1 MHz channel
images show rms noise to within about 1.5-2 times that expected.

The exercise is an encouraging demonstration of the full ASKAP array with 12 antennas, albeit with reduced specs (48 MHz and a single beam).
This data has also for the first time been ingested from the Pawsey centre as will be the case for Early Science and beyond. Earlier, the
correlated data were processed and re-arranged into astronomer-friendly measurement sets using processing (ingestion) done at the MRO. Busy
    times ahead. Stay tuned ..."

The last two months of the Curiosity mission have been spent on a southward drive toward the Murray buttes, topographic landmarks
of a relatively sand-free region that will allow Curiosity to finally cross the Bagnold dune field. In the last 50-plus sols,
Curiosity has covered several hundred meters of flat Murray mudstone that separates the Naukluft plateau from the buttes. The rover
is now poised to enter the buttes themselves, and the views are, as expected, spectacular.
