Don’t panic, but the observable Universe just got a bit smaller - ScienceAlert
    http://www.sciencealert.com/don-t-panic-but-the-observable-universe-just-got-a-bit-smaller
For the first time in over a decade, scientists have updated our measurements of the radius of the observable Universe,
and it turns out, it’s not as big as we thought.

In fact, the part of the Universe that’s technically visible from Earth right now just shrunk by about 320 million light-
years in all directions, so come in closer, everyone, make some room.

Venus-like exoplanet might have oxygen atmosphere, but not life | EurekAlert! Science News
    http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2016-08/hcfa-vem081816.php
The distant planet GJ 1132b intrigued astronomers when it was discovered last year. Located just 39 light-years from Earth,
it might have an atmosphere despite being baked to a temperature of around 450 degrees Fahrenheit. But would that atmosphere
be thick and soupy or thin and wispy? New research suggests the latter is much more likely.

Harvard astronomer Laura Schaefer (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, or CfA) and her colleagues
examined the question of what would happen to GJ 1132b over time if it began with a steamy, water-rich atmosphere.

ESA Science & Technology: Gaia's second anniversary marked by successes and challenges
    http://sci.esa.int/gaia/58135-gaia-s-second-anniversary-marked-by-successes-and-challenges/
Operating in the depths of space, far beyond the Moon's orbit, ESA's Gaia spacecraft has now completed two years
of a planned five-year survey of the sky. Despite a series of unexpected technical challenges, the mission is on
track to complete the most detailed and complex mapping of the heavens ever undertaken.

Pro-telescope group: Don't close door to education benefits
    http://bigstory.ap.org/...54f94157efe756ce9aa/pro-telescope-group-dont-close-door-education-benefits

Building a giant telescope atop Mauna Kea will come with educational opportunities that Hawaii shouldn't close the door to,
the president of a Native Hawaiian group that supports the project said.

Perpetuating Unique Educational Opportunities President Keahi Warfield told a Waikiki hotel banquet room filled with members of
the Rotary Club of Honolulu Tuesday that he believes there's a "silent majority" of the public who support the Thirty Meter Telescope.

The $1.4 billion telescope has divided the Native Hawaiian community, with many opponents saying it will desecrate sacred land.
The state Supreme Court invalidated the project's permit last year and ordered a new contested case hearing. Warfield's group,
whose acronym PUEO means Hawaiian owl, is allowed to participate in the upcoming hearing.

The nonprofit organization's board consists of Native Hawaiian elders, Warfield said.

    Possibly maybe?.......

In a paper that was recently published in the journal Physical Review Letters, a research team from the University of California,
Irvine explain how recent particle physics experiments may have yielded evidence of a new type of boson. This boson apparently does not
behave as other bosons do, and may be an indication that there is yet another force of nature out there governing fundamental interactions.

What did the first collections of stars look like? | astrobites
    https://astrobites.org/2016/08/18/what-did-the-first-collections-of-stars-look-like/
The first stars, confusingly named Population III, form out of gas containing no metals (Astronomy parlance for elements heavier than Hydrogen and Helium).
This makes them different from stars that form subsequently (known as Population I and II. I know, it’s backwards. Blame Walter Baade), as these later stars
form from gas containing the metals expelled by the trailblazing Pop III stars. Because Pop III stars form from metal free gas they have unique properties
compared to stars in the universe today. One of the most striking features is their extreme mass, a hundred times the mass of our Sun in some theories. Such
large stars subsequently have very short lifetimes, as they burn through their nuclear fuel rapidly. This in turn makes them difficult to detect; in the grand
timeline of the universe, they blink in and out of existence. Until we get better observations one of the only ways to explore these objects, and test theories
of their formation and evolution, is through simulations.

SLAC researchers recreate the extreme universe in the lab
    http://spaceref.com/news/viewpr.html?pid=49308
Conditions in the vast universe can be quite extreme: Violent collisions scar the surfaces of planets. Nuclear reactions in bright
stars generate tremendous amounts of energy. Gigantic explosions catapult matter far out into space. But how exactly do processes
like these unfold? What do they tell us about the universe? And could their power be harnessed for the benefit of humankind?

To find out, researchers from the Department of Energy's SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory perform sophisticated experiments
and computer simulations that recreate violent cosmic conditions on a small scale in the lab.

Alien life could be a lot closer to home than you think

For thousands of years, humans have looked to the stars, wondering whether there are other lifeforms out there
in the vastness of space, but it might be worth taking a look at some truly alien life here on Earth first.
