OSIRIS-REx says hello to the ATA! | SETI Institute
    http://www.seti.org/seti-institute/osiris-rex-says-hi-to-ata
The ATA uses 42 radio dishes to search for radio transmissions from ET. How do we know the system is working?
To answer that we point the dishes in the direction of a spacecraft we know is transmitting radio signals back
to Earth. If our software detects a radio transmission at the exact frequency as the spacecraft's transmission
we know things are working as they should. On September 11, 2016 we tested the ATA by pointing at the newly
    launched NASA Osiris-REx spacecraft.

Galactic Model Simulates How ET Civilizations Could Be Deliberately Avoiding Earth

One hypothesis suggests that extraterrestrials haven’t contacted Earth because they’re ignoring us.
Now astronomers have simulated how difficult that would be to do.

Statistical properties of star formation in molecular clouds
    http://phys.org/news/2016-09-statistical-properties-star-formation-molecular.html

Stars form within the dense regions of diffuse molecular clouds, but the physical processes that determine the locations, rate, and efficiency of star formation
are poorly understood. Recent thinking envisions an approximately two-step process: first, a network of dense filaments form due to large-scale turbulence and
then fragmentation into cores occurs as gravity starts to dominate. In the dense gas the structure formation is affected by motions induced primarily by three
processes: supersonic turbulence, self-gravity, and magnetic fields, although the role of each process is still debated.
Recent research suggests that the statistical properties of the column density (for example, the numbers of cores denser than a fixed value) offer a key to
unraveling structure formation mechanisms. Computer simulations of star formation show that if the number of dense cores having any particular density value
is random, then turbulence is probably dominant, but if denser cores tend to cluster non-randomly, then gravity is probably dominant.

    Space in Images - 2016 - 09 - ESA’s Star Mapper visualisation
    http://www.esa.int/spaceinimages/Images/2016/09/ESA_s_Star_Mapper_visualisation

In 1989, ESA launched the first space mission dedicated to astrometry – the science of charting the sky. The satellite was named Hipparcos,
echoing the name of ancient Greek astronomer, Hipparchus, who compiled the oldest known stellar catalogue in the second century BC.

Hipparcos operated for over three years and a catalogue based on its data, released in 1997, had a major impact on many areas of astronomy research.

This catalogue listed 117 955 stars, reporting their positions with unprecedented accuracy, alongside estimates of their distance from us and motions
through the Galaxy. It was a huge advance on the best catalogues compiled from ground-based observations, which contained information for just over
    8000 stars.

First Signs Of Animal Life On Earth May Be From Microbes - Astrobiology Magazine
    http://www.astrobio.net/news-exclusive/first-signs-animal-life-earth-may-microbes/
Evidence suggests that microbes existed on Earth as far back as 3.7 billion years ago, a billion years after the planet formed.
Animal remains, however, don’t appear in the fossil record until 600 million years ago during the Ediacaran period, though there
are indirect signs that animal life may have gotten started much earlier.

Meet LUCA: Scientists Discover the Common Ancestor to All Life on Earth | Big Think
    http://bigthink.com/paul-ratner/is-this-where-all-life-on-earth-began
Scientists may have identified the ancestor that started all life and where it lived.
We are talking about LUCA, the Last Universal Common Ancestor, also known as the “microbial Eve”.

This is the organism from which all modern cells descended which likely lived underwater
in hydrothermal vents, an area where seawater and magma come together on the ocean floor.

As the researchers say in their paper in “Nature Microbiology” -

“The concept of a last universal common ancestor of all cells (LUCA, or the progenote)
is central to the study of early evolution and life's origin, yet information about
how and where LUCA lived is lacking.”

Rosetta's descent towards region of active pits
    http://phys.org/news/2016-09-rosetta-descent-region-pits.html
Squeezing out unique scientific observations until the very end, Rosetta's thrilling mission
will culminate with a descent on 30 September towards a region of active pits on the comet's 'head'.
The region, known as Ma'at, lies on the smaller of the two lobes of Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko.
It is home to several active pits more than 100 m in diameter and 50–60 m in depth – where a number
of the comet's dust jets originate.
