Artemis Program Status:
Artemis I (Completed): The uncrewed test flight in 2022 successfully validated SLS and Orion, though unexpected heat shield damage during reentry prompted extensive investigation, impacting subsequent schedules.
Artemis II: Now targeting April 2026, this mission will send four astronauts—Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen—on a lunar flyby, the first crewed lunar mission since Apollo 17. Delays stem from engineering fixes, including Orion’s heat shield and battery issues.
Artemis III: Planned for mid-2027, it aims for a crewed lunar landing at the South Pole using SpaceX’s Starship as the human landing system. Development of Starship’s propellant transfer and docking capabilities is ongoing, with tests expected in 2025.
Artemis IV and Beyond: Artemis IV (2028) will integrate the Lunar Gateway station, with SLS Block 1B and Blue Origin’s lander joining the architecture. Later missions (V-X) are planned through the 2030s, focusing on sustained lunar presence, but schedules are considered optimistic by some analysts due to budget constraints and technical hurdles.
