That point makes the “social cost of carbon” one of the most critically important metrics underlying regulation of climate pollutants. An estimate of the dollar costs of each ton of carbon pollution caused by climate change, the social cost of carbon guides federal agencies that are required to consider the costs and benefits of proposed regulations. Federal agencies so far have used the social cost of carbon while writing regulations with more than $1 trillion in economic benefits.
In 2010, a governmental interagency working group in the Obama administration established the first federal social cost of carbon estimate of $45 per ton of carbon dioxide pollution. In 2017, newly inaugurated President Donald Trump quickly disbanded the interagency group by executive order, and within months his EPA slashed the metric to between $1 and $6. The latest research by an independent team of scientists concludes that the social cost of carbon should actually start at about $100 to $200 per ton of carbon dioxide pollution in 2020, increasing to nearly $600 by 2100.
Should presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden win the presidency in the November election, his federal agency appointees will undoubtedly set about revising the social cost of carbon to reflect the up-to-date climate science and economics research. The revised social cost of carbon will in turn justify more stringent federal climate regulations. A Donald Trump second term would instead result in another four years of underestimated climate impact costs and continued delays in efforts to curb carbon pollution.

Before the coronavirus pandemic struck, Wilson set out on an international journey through Greenland and Iceland (which he admits racked up a regrettably large carbon footprint, that he'll be offsetting) to learn about the climate crisis and how to be an activist. Wilson documented his travels for a new six-part docuseries called An Idiot’s Guide to Climate Change, produced by his content studio SoulPancake. The series shows Wilson’s transition from “an every-day, well-intentioned, but uninformed, liberal to strident climate activist” according to press materials sent to Green Matters.

"My trip to Greenland and Iceland was amazing,” Wilson tells Green Matters exclusively via email. “I saw my first glacier and talked to more nerdy scientists than I ever have in my life. But I also left my trip feeling terribly concerned. My conversation with Greta Thunberg put things in perspective for me: I need to take action and use my platform to encourage people to learn more about the climate crisis and vote for platforms that support the science, so that's what I'm doing.”

The UK’s biggest pension fund, the government-backed National Employment Savings Trust (Nest) scheme with nine million members, is to begin divesting from fossil fuels in what climate campaigners have hailed as a landmark move for the industry.
The fund will ban investments in any companies involved in coal mining, oil from tar sands and arctic drilling. But the move puts Nest – a public corporation of the Department for Work and Pensions – potentially at odds with the current pensions minister, Guy Opperman, who earlier this month condemned divestment as “counter productive”.

TUHO: Kerner said the county is well prepared and the shelters, and would have temperature checks and be divided into family units. Masks will be provided as needed and law enforcement will be on hand to help enforce social distancing, he said.
The storm comes at a sensitive time during the coronavirus pandemic. Florida reported nearly 10,000 new Covid-19 cases Thursday, the highest total for one state on that day, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Giménez told CNN on Thursday he would be concerned about keeping evacuees socially distanced if a hurricane hit the state.
"Look, if we have a major hurricane here, then we're going to have to evacuate a number of people and then we're going to have to ... try to keep them separated as much as possible," he said. "That's a concern."
"When you're not testing is also a concern," he added. "But the greater danger, the immediate danger has to be taken care of first, and that's getting our people out of harm's way."

The Bahamas and eastern Florida are bracing for hurricane conditions this weekend as Hurricane Isaias barrels through the Caribbean and into the southeastern US.
The center of Isaias was moving over the central Bahamas Friday night. It will move near the northwestern part of the island nation Saturday and is expected to track near the east coast of Florida's peninsula Saturday afternoon and Sunday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Record high temperatures have been plaguing the Middle East, the mercury soaring to extreme levels during a blistering and unforgiving heat wave. Baghdad surged to its highest temperature ever recorded Tuesday.
Tuesday’s preliminary high of 125.2 degrees (51.8 Celsius) in Iraq’s capital city shatters its previous record of 123.8 degrees set on July 30, 2015, for any day of the year.

Today, oil giant Shell, a titan of the industry, revealed a net loss of USD 18.3 billion for the second quarter of this year, down from a net profit of USD 3 billion over the same period last year. This means Shell business is down USD 20 billion from last year.
Meanwhile, another titan, French oil company Total, has announced a USD 8 billion write-down on the value of its assets, including USD 7 bilion from dirty Canadian tar sands Canadian operations.
The company stated, “total now considers oil reserves with high production costs that are to be produced more than 20 years in the future to be ‘stranded.’”
What the industry denied for years, that its assets have become liabilities, has become a reality.
It is not just the international oil companies that are in trouble. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is the cartel that has dominated the oil and gas landscape for decades.

Uvádí to pololetní zpráva nezávislého institutu Ember (odkaz zde). Špinavé zdroje energie jsou kvůli přísnějším ekologickým pravidlům nerentabilní. To nutí vlády a energetické firmy po celé Evropě uzavírat celé doly a uhelné elektrárny. Česká republika je výjimkou.

The shill, the grifter, the egomaniac and the ideological fool: each distorts the urgent global debate in their own way

    ..

A sadder case is that of the grifters. They have found themselves earning a living by grinding out contrarian articles for rightwing media outlets. Do they actually believe the guff they write? It doesn’t matter: they just warm their hands on the outrage, count the clicks and wait for the pay cheque.

The Satanic Gases marshals an impressive array of scientific data, studies, and analyses that argue, cogently and consistently, that the initial forecasts of rapid global warming were simply wrong. But, perhaps more important, the book points out that attempts to “fix” the forecast by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change are even more misguided than the original projections.

The authors argue that the jury is already in on global warming, and the verdict is a modest heating over the 21st century—very similar to what occurred during the last third of the 20th century. The vast majority of warming will take place in the winter, and within that season, the coldest, deadliest air masses will show the greatest change. The final third of the last century saw the greatest improvements in food supply, wealth, and longevity of life ever experienced. Some improvements actually resulted from changes in the earth’s natural greenhouse effect and others were totally insensitive to temperature. The authors argue that it is virtually impossible to reverse all of that progress with only a continued slow warming of the planet.

Unlike every other book on global warming, The Satanic Gases places the issue in its proper social and scientific context. Citing the pioneering work of historian of science Thomas Kuhn and economist James Buchanan, Michaels and Balling demonstrate that it was inevitable that global warming would be distorted by the political sphere and that most scientists would either stand mute or actually assist in that process. But, the authors argue, such distortions in science are always temporary, and inevitably the scientific community will concede that earlier forecasts dramatically exaggerated the threat of global warming.

Carbon dioxide threatens life in the Gulf of Mexico - Futurity
    https://www.futurity.org/...utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=gulf-of-mexico-carbon-dioxide-fish-2409192-2

The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased 40% since the Industrial Revolution (1760 to 1840) because of human activities—and the ocean, including the Gulf of Mexico, has absorbed at least 25% of it. That’s a trend that will almost certainly continue, oceanographers say.

Boeing has said it will stop making its classic 747 plane and is eyeing steeper job cuts than those it has previously announced.
The firm is also planning to slow production of many of its jets, including the troubled 737 Max.
The changes come as the firm disclosed a $2.4bn (£1.8bn) loss as the virus depressed demand for air travel.
"The reality is the pandemic's impact on the aviation sector continues to be severe," said Boeing boss Dave Calhoun.
