TUHOKlimaticka zmena / Thank you so much for ruining my day

"Given the sheer enormity of climate change, it’s okay to be depressed, to grieve. But please, don’t stay there too long. Join me in pure, unadulterated, righteous anger."

"I don’t want your hope. I don’t want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act. Once you start to act, the hope is everywhere."

"Our best scientists tell us insistently that a calamity is unfolding, that the life-support systems of the Earth are being damaged in ways that threaten our survival. Yet in the face of these facts we carry on as usual."

“We’ve got to stop burning fossil fuels. So many aspects of life depend on fossil fuels, except for music and love and education and happiness. These things, which hardly use fossil fuels, are what we must focus on.”

A nejde o to, že na to nemáme dostatečné technologie, ty by na řešení použít šly, ale chybí nám vůle a představivost je využít. Zůstáváme při zemi, přemýšlíme až moc rezervovaně. Technologický pokrok to sám o sobě nevyřeší. Problém jsme my, ne technologické nástroje.

Rostouci hladiny oceanu, zmena atmosferickeho proudeni, zmeny v distribuci srazek a sucha. Zmeny karbonoveho, fosforoveho a dusikoveho cyklu, okyselovani oceanu. Jake jsou bezpecnostni rizika a jake potencialni klady dramatickych zmen fungovani zemskeho systemu?

Nařídil například ministerstvu vnitra, aby v co největší míře pozastavilo uzavírání nových smluv o pronájmu federální půdy k těžbě ropy a plynu. Podle nového šéfa Bílého domu Spojené státy nemohou v souvislosti s ekologickými výzvami dál otálet.

Americká média před dnešním vystoupením prezidenta psala o zahájení „frontálního útoku“ proti klimatickým změnám nebo o rychlém startu ambiciózního projektu nové administrativy. Během povolebního přechodného období Biden avizoval například rozsáhlé investice do „zelené infrastruktury“ včetně vyčlenění dvou bilionů dolarů (43 bilionů Kč) na projekty kolem obnovitelných zdrojů.

Pogue, a former New York Times tech columnist and current contributor, has got you covered. This is a climate change worst-case scenario survival guide: stronger hurricanes, forest fires, droughts, tick- and mosquito-borne illnesses, heat waves, tornadoes, plus how to prepare your business and also how to invest your money before the capitalist superstructure crumbles, apparently. (“Preparing for Social Breakdown” is one chapter.)

If Pogue is living the life he’s advising, he is eating homegrown beans, calmly explaining the crisis to his children and monitoring their psychological health, asking his contractor to deepen the soffits in his roof on which he is mounting solar panels, buying several air purifiers and organizing with his fellow citizens.

Much of the book, especially the sections on what to look for in an insurance policy, is helpful. It also includes an explanation of climate science and the obligatory feel-good sections on hope: actions some are taking and how you can part icipate.

A particularly eerie chapter covers which American cities will “do well” in a warmer climate. (Boulder, Colorado)

Energy Transition Investment Hits Half A Trillion For The First Time
    https://www.forbes.com/...sition-investment-hits-half-a-trillion-for-the-first-time/?sh=55712024748f

Despite the economic disruption caused by COVID-19, global spending on the transition to a low carbon economy hit a record $501.3 billion in 2020, up 9% on the previous year.
    ...
Global investment in carbon capture and storage (CCS) tripled to $3 billion, and that in hydrogen was $1.5 billion, down 20% but the second-highest annual number to date. Cheung added, “Technologies such as electric heat, CCS and hydrogen are only attracting a fraction of the investment they will need in the 2020s to help bring emissions under control. We need to be talking about trillions per year if we are to meet climate goals.”
    ...
Jon Moore, chief executive of BNEF, said: “Overall investment in wind and solar has been robust and electric vehicle sales jumped more than expected. Some 54% of 2016 emissions are now under some form of net-zero commitment, up from 34% at the start of last year. This should drive increasing investment in the coming years.”

Biden May Kill A Quarter Of U.S. Oil And Gas Production
    https://www.forbes.com/.../27/biden-may-kill-a-quarter-of-us-oil-and-gas-production/?sh=28c80fe0361c

Almost a quarter of US oil production and 12 percent of natural gas production takes place on federal land and water. According to the Interior Department’s Office of Natural Resource Revenue federal drilling programs generated $11.7 billion in tax revenue. If the moratorium extends to all active leases on federal lands, this will be gone, despite the mushrooming 2020 federal debt of $27 trillion and budget deficit of over $3 trillion – a whopping 16 percent of the GDP.

Taiwan expelled nearly 4,000 Chinese vessels illegally dredging sand from its waters in 2020, authorities said Monday, a more than six-fold increase on the year before as Beijing seeks to heap pressure on the democratic island.

Up to November last year, it expelled 3,969 vessels, compared to 600 in 2019 and 71 in 2018.

"Illegal dredging can pose non-traditional security threats to Taiwan by causing economic and environmental damages as well as civilian conflicts,"

Je to takova klasika: kde se uz tezi, at se tezi dal, stejne tam uz "nikdo" nebydli. No a hlavne at se nezacne tezit za mymi okny.

Forests Absorb Twice As Much Carbon As They Emit Each Year
    https://cleantechnica.com/2021/01/21/forests-absorb-twice-as-much-carbon-as-they-emit-each-year/

New research, published in Nature Climate Change and available on Global Forest Watch, found that the world’s forests sequestered about twice as much carbon dioxide as they emitted between 2001 and 2019. In other words, forests provide a “carbon sink” that absorbs a net 7.6 billion metric tonnes of CO2 per year, 1.5 times more carbon than the United States emits annually.

A Review of Technical Advances, Barriers, and Solutions in the Power to Hydrogen (P2H) Roadmap - ScienceDirect
    https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2095809920302861

Power to hydrogen (P2H) provides a promising solution to the geographic mismatch between sources of renewable energy and the market, due to its technological maturity, flexibility, and the availability of technical and economic data from a range of active demonstration projects. In this review, we aim to provide an overview of the status of P2H, analyze its technical barriers and solutions, and propose potential opportunities for future research and industrial demonstrations

    ...

The conversion of hydrogen into liquid fuels (e.g., methanol, ethanol, methane, formic acid, or even gasoline) will remain a popular research topic, as these hydrogen-sourced fuels require little modification of existing fuel systems. This approach may play a significant role in promoting the progress of P2H in light of carbon dioxide utilization. Other aspects, such as the cost reduction of electrolyzers, the redistribution and utilization of oxygen, environmental impacts, the availability of water, and the readiness of regulations are still in their early stages and require considerable efforts to explore
