Disappointment as climate sceptic Jacob Rees-Mogg named new Energy Secretary - EnvironmentJournal
    https://environmentjournal.online/articles/disappointment-as-climate-sceptic-jacob-rees-mogg-named-new-energy-secretary/

New Prime Minister Liz Truss has appointed climate sceptic Jacob Rees-Mogg to lead on issues relating to energy and the climate crisis, sparking concern amongst climate campaigners.

Rees-Mogg, who invests in oil and coal mining through a fund he co-founded, Somerset Capital Management, has also rejected calls for a windfall tax on energy companies ‘so they can get every last drop out of the North Sea.’

Friends of the Earth’s head of political affairs, Dave Timms, said: ‘Putting someone who recently suggested “every last drop” of oil should be extracted from the North Sea in charge of energy policy is deeply worrying for anyone concerned about the deepening climate emergency, solving the cost-of-living crisis and keeping our fuel bills down for good.

King Charles III appears to signal an end to climate change activism
    https://news.yahoo.com/king-charles-iii-appears-to-signal-an-end-to-climate-change-activism-174330601.html

Outspoken about the "existential" threat posed by climate change when he was Prince of Wales, King Charles III on Friday seemed to signal an effective end to his decades-long public advocacy for lowering greenhouse gas emissions, which are warming global temperatures.

In his first speech as king, Charles pledged to uphold the constitutional principles that kept the sovereign, including his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, from weighing in on what could be seen as political matters

    La Niña's global effect

La Niña occurrences have a devastating global impact because of its effect on weather and climate, Richard Seager, Ph.D., a research professor at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, told ABC News.

The weather has caused droughts in North and South America and equatorial eastern Africa. La Niña is also linked to floods in Asia, such as the devastating floods Pakistan has endured since June, Seager said.

NOAA forecasts that the expected La Niña winter season, which is from December 2022 to February 2023, in the U.S. won't be atypical, as the northern Plains, Rockies and Pacific Northwest will also experience cooler temperatures; the South will be hotter than normal and the East Coast may be warmer than it usually is during that time of the year, according to L'Heureux.

@willmacaskill shows how deep in climate denial effective altruism and longtermism are. I once even wrote Bostrom to warn about their errors - nothing changed 🤡 The claim 15°C (fn 98) is funny, given lethal Chinese and UK 40°C heatwaves at barely 1.2°C.

The energy historian who says rapid decarbonization is a fantasy - Los Angeles Times
    https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2022-09-05/the-energy-historian-who-says-rapid-decarbonization-is-a-fantasy

Fossil fuels now supply about 83% of the world’s commercial energy, compared to 86% in the year 2000. The new renewables (wind and solar) now provide (after some two decades of development) still less than 6% of the world’s primary energy, still less than hydroelectricity.

What are the chances that after going from 86% to 83% during the first two decades of the 21st century the world will go from 83% to zero during the next two decades? Especially as a few weeks ago China announced additional 300 million tons of new coal production for 2022, and India additional 400 million tons by the end of 2023. We are still running into fossil fuels, not away from them.

Greenland just experienced its largest September melt event on record. An unusually late heat wave spurred melting across about 35 percent of the ice sheet last weekend — widespread melting that is typically observed in July.

#kecy Byli jsme v Olomouci v malem planetariu.
