One of the most severe marine heatwaves on the planet is taking place in the shallow seas around the UK and Ireland. That’s according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which has labelled this a “Category 4” heatwave. Rarely used outside of the tropics, a cat 4 heatwave means “extreme” heat.

Marine heatwaves are classified as “prolonged periods of anomalously high sea surface temperature”, when compared to the long-term average for that time of year. And thanks to measurements made by satellites orbiting the earth we know that, in some areas around the UK, surface water temperatures are 4°C to 5°C above normal for mid June.

This is extremely unusual: buoys around Ireland and the UK have been recording sea surface temperature for over 20 years, and in that time it has never been this hot this early in the summer.

At this time of year, these plankton are dependent on nutrients mixed up from the deep water into the surface layer. However, this year, this nutrient supply may be diminished, since the very high surface temperature means there is likely stronger stratification and less mixing.

A heatwave on the surface could potentially harm the deeper ocean too, and the fish that live there. These continental shelf seas are already suffering from a decline in deep water oxygen, which is partly offset by mixing oxygen-rich water from the surface. However, the fact that the surface temperatures are so high point to a lack of mixing between the layers, and in any case, warmer water contains less oxygen.

hele mam tu malou prosbu. Asi vsichni vite, ze o klimatu frci tolik klamu a dezinforamci, ze se to realne neda zvladat odbavovat a i pro lidi vzdelane v oboru muze byt problem se zorientovat.

No my tedka rozjizdime projekt, ktery by mel prenes AI modely do debaty, validovat a klasifikovat myty a dezinformace a nabizet cileny debunking.

Spolupracujeme na tom s prof. Travisem Coanem z Universtiy of Exeter a jeho doktorandskym studentem Ranadheerem Mallou, ktery zaroven maji AI startup Discourselab.ai. Typci jsou nabuseny jako krava, ale zatim svuj vyzkum publikovali jenom v akademii. My to chcem otevrit verejnosti a umoznit kazdymu, at dostane cutting edge AI modely primo ke svymu pouziti. Do toho stavime analytickej tym z lidi, ktery zkoumaj dezinformacni site, i ktery dlouhy leta pracovali v klimatickym modelovani (Petr Vidomus, Jozef Pecho a dalsi).

Typci v Discourselabs.ai maj v pipeline mnohem vic veci, nechci tedka uplne predbihat nez nebudem mit rozbehly zakladni kostru projektu, ale z tech moznosti se mi lehce toci hlava. Mame rozpracovanej automatickej scrapping konspiracnich siti, umi detekovat a vyhodnocovat stovky tisic zprav prakticky okamzite (resp po hodine), delat z toho automaticky vyhodnocovani a dodavat na stribrnym podnose.

Nas cil je, udelat z toho funkcni projekt s metodologii, validaci modelu, vizualnim jazykem, budgetem i potrebnym tymem, rozject to u nas a potom nabizet do zahranici. Insane totiz je, ze jejich modely jsou natrenovany na anglickejch datech, ale vyborne fungujou i na ceskejch. A kdyz fungujou i na ceskejch, neni moc duvod aby nefungovali na slovenskejch, polskejch, madarskejch... You name it.

Dostali jsme funding na rozjeti projektu, ale v soucasnosti nemame na jeho running costs a dalsi development.
Vcera jsme proto spustili crowd-funding. Zaciname organicky, mezi znamejma az pojede prvni verze webu, tak to budem promovat i vic verejne.

Tak pokud mate nekdo nejakou dvacku, kterou muzete postradat, budeme velmi radi za podporu. Zvlast ted na zacatku je to megadulezity, protoze dokud tam neni nejakej signifikantni pocet prispivajicich, tak to pusobi jako psychologicka bariera pro dalsi lidi.

Btw, pokud by tady byli nejaky zajemci o experimentalni pristup k chatbotovi, ktery na tom systemu funguje, tak napiste do posty.

DZODZO: v Indii nevím, co se reálně stane, ti jsou schopni válčit o vodu s Pákistánem, apod. Ale v Číně by ta totalita v tomhle případě mohla být aspoň k něčemu, že by strana zavelela "konec uhlí, konec importu ropy" a byl by konec obojího. Akorát kdyby to šlo, tak to nejspíš už dávno udělaj, nebo nevím. Každopádně se zdají momentálně být blíže tomu akceptovat nějaká vědecká fakta, než třeba Amíci pod Trumpem. Akorát doopravdy nevíme, protože je to prostě Čína, no.
