Amazon backs power plant that may become top source of US climate pollution - Ars Technica
    https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/08/amazon-funds-biggest-gas-power-plant-in-us-despite-climate-pledge/

Amazon’s artificial intelligence ambitions will soon be partly fueled by a natural gas-burning power plant in Texas that “could become the largest single source of climate pollution in the United States,” The New York Times reported.

At the start of August, Cleanview discovered that the tech giant had filed three construction permits in Texas near the power plant that were “beginning immediately” and wondered if the projects were linked.

Thoroughly documenting the paper trail and taking satellite images, Cleanview got Amazon to confirm its suspicions, then released a report Friday warning that “Amazon is backing what could be the largest natural gas power plant ever built in the United States.”

Specifically, one permit showed the power plant “would use 35 turbines to generate up to 7.65 gigawatts of power,” Cleanview reported.

Although it’s rare for any facility to emit as much as its permits allow, Cleanview is concerned that Amazon’s rush to fulfill Amazon Web Services cloud orders will tempt the company to blast more and more emissions into more areas each year without adequately weighing public harms. On top of the Texas power plant, Amazon is also “in talks with the developers of a 4.5 GW gas power plant in Homer City, Pennsylvania,” Cleanview reported.

The worst most widespread drought conditions in Europe now are in countries where it is quite unusual: Romania, Hungary, France, and England. Parts of Spain are the driest in 1,000 years. Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands are also hard hit.

    Hot summer economics
    https://www.triodos.com/en/articles/2026/hot-summer-economics

Europe's heatwave this summer will cut EU GDP by around 1% in 2026, roughly €180 billion, matching the bloc's entire expected growth for the year, according to a new Triodos Bank report. An estimated 20,400 people died from heat-related causes across France, Germany, Spain and Italy in a single week in June, with wildfires having already burned more land by 30 July than in any full previous year on record.

France is projected to take the biggest economic hit, with GDP growth cut by 1.4 percentage points, potentially pushing an already weak forecast into a 0.6% contraction for 2026. The Netherlands faces near-stagnant growth after an 0.8-point loss. Poland, despite being highly exposed on paper, escapes largely unscathed this year simply because it has had fewer extreme-heat days than usual, while Spain and Italy, hit by the most hot days, are cushioned by decades of acclimatisation.

Labour productivity is the single largest driver of the losses, more than agriculture, energy or transport combined, with research showing measurable output drops once temperatures pass roughly 25–30°C, especially in outdoor and non-air-conditioned work.

The report's authors point to 17 July, when the European Commission proposed easing the trajectory of the EU's carbon-pricing emissions cap through the 2030s on competitiveness grounds, the same week wildfire and death tolls were hitting record levels. That, they argue, illustrates the loop they say Europe is now caught in: heat damages growth, policy loosens to protect growth, emissions rise, and the next heatwave costs more.

When half a billion people live in low lying coastal areas - and will now inevitably have to move in the coming decades - the situation is not "a problem". It is not a "challenge". Only people utterly deluded by their own soon to end privileges could use such psychotic framing.

What is happening is a total fucking crime - enacted by people with names and addresses.

The worst harvest on record. Farmers questioning whether it's worth planting next year. And even Jeremy Clarkson says the sums aren't adding up.

The harvest crisis unfolding across Britain is becoming impossible to ignore.

After months of drought and extreme weather, farmers are reporting some of the poorest cereal, oilseed and potato crops in decades, with industry estimates suggesting this year's harvest could be the smallest since records began.

Among those sounding the alarm is Jeremy Clarkson, who says he can spend 15 to 20 hours a day harvesting and still struggle to make the numbers work.

But beyond the Clarkson headlines lies a much bigger story.

Farmers across England are warning about collapsing yields, poor-quality grain, rising costs and growing concerns over food security. Some are even questioning whether planting certain crops this autumn makes financial sense.

As Ireland copes with its own weather challenges, the UK experience offers a stark reminder of how quickly drought can transform a harvest and reshape thinking about farming, water security and food production.

Could Ireland face similar problems if extreme weather becomes more common?

And for tillage farmers, how has this year's harvest compared with your expectations back in the spring?

"We can now expect everything from yellow and orange air and failed crops to buckling railways and the forced shutdowns of nuclear plants due to low water."

"Water bombers, the air cavalry of wildfire fighting, buzz the treetops like air show stunt pilots as they save the day with surgical drops of water or orange retardant.

But what happens when those drops have no effect? When, as a pilot working the massive Gironde Fire just west of Bordeaux, France, described
    ( https://zeit.de/wissenschaft/2026-07/cap-ferret-frankreich-waldbrand-tourismus-urlaub ) it:

“The environment above the fire is so hot that my payload of 10,000 liters of water evaporates in the air.”? Mathieu Jomain, a commander and 26-year veteran in Gironde’s fire service, compared the fire’s intensity to “a meteorological nuclear bomb.”

"This is the new reality of wildfires in the 21st Century: they hit different. And, too often now, the water doesn’t hit at all.
From America to Algeria, dangerous blazes are occurring around the world, giving us a glimpse into an age ablaze We should all be asking the question: What will this age entail?

    "Fire phenonemon"

We are witnessing, live and in person, a terrible convergence of prolonged drought and record-breaking temperatures across the Northern Hemisphere. It is a convergence expressed most emphatically by unfightable fires racing across tinder-dry landscapes, fanned by high winds that are, increasingly, generated by the fires themselves. Just as warm waters fuel hurricanes, hot landscapes alive with roaring fire energize a wildfire’s chimney-like central column by burning all available fuel—grassland, forests, and neighborhoods alike—with explosive speed, and irrepressible ferocity that can produce flames higher than a thirty-story building and radiant heat approaching 1,000 °C"

Beginning his career as an oil-rig engineer before retraining as a climate scientist, Kevin Anderson’s career has been an extraordinary journey. On Downstream this week, Aaron Bastani sat down with him to discuss what has become his life’s work: sounding the alarm on man-made climate change, and on the fossil fuel industry that gave him his start.

Just how much has the planet heated, and why? Is the Paris Agreement’s aim of keeping heating to beneath 1.5°C still achievable, or delusional cope? What are the political obstacles to tackling the issue? Having worked with Andy Burnham in Manchester, what does Kevin think he will do on climate, as PM? Is avoiding catastrophe still possible, and if so, how much time have we got to act, before it’s too late?

The gargantuan lie that is killing us

Adam McKay, the director of “Don’t Look Up”, on “The Gargantuan Lie That is Collapsing The World’s Climate”, one of the “hulking distortions and misrepresentations watered and tended to by leaders, mass media, culture, and industry”, which are the most dangerous lies.

As Adam notes, “This particular sub-genus of grifts, half-truths and strategic omissions have led throughout modern history to wars, mass death, societal collapse, and the theft of humanity’s great treasures. ‘Manifest Destiny.’ ‘Aryan superiority.’ ‘The divine right of kings.’ ‘The domino theory.’ ‘Israel has a right to defend itself.’”

“However”, he adds, “there is one type of rare, gargantuan, towering lie that makes all the other mass lies throughout human history seem like frightened, scurrying, little adorable fibs.”

“It is”, he continues, “a lie told worldwide by hundreds of thousands of institutions, elected officials, many universities, legacy news, some large non-profits and eventually — as the deception entered mainstream culture — even by ourselves, to ourselves, every single moment of every day” — the lie that, “when it comes to climate change, we have more time.”

    https://www.facebook.com/share/1Dj2ZHHbah/

The essence of humanist hubris is the notion every problem can be solved - meaning we are not humans but gods. But, as we are about to discover, we are just human after all. We sit there and let people in charge fuck things up. And then there is no going back.

10 years of hubris gets you 10,000 years of climatic chaos. Not clever.

“What people are not getting is that we can’t turn this back – the CO2 to a large part remains in the air for thousands of years,” said Rahmstorf. “Some people think we can wait and, when it gets too bad, then we reduce emissions and things will get better again. People don’t realise that we can’t make it get better again. We can only prevent it from getting much worse.”
