TUHOKlimaticka zmena / Destroying the Future Is the Most Cost-Effective
"Given the sheer enormity of climate change, it’s okay to be depressed, to grieve. But please, don’t stay there too long. Join me in pure, unadulterated, righteous anger."

"I don’t want your hope. I don’t want you to be hopeful. ... I want you to act. Once you start to act, the hope is everywhere."

"Our best scientists tell us insistently that a calamity is unfolding, that the life-support systems of the Earth are being damaged in ways that threaten our survival. Yet in the face of these facts we carry on as usual."

Bulgaria is becoming a regional laboratory for battery storage - energynomics.ro
    https://www.energynomics.ro/en/bulgaria-is-becoming-a-regional-laboratory-for-battery-storage/

Bulgaria already has close to 4.84 GW of operational battery power and 14.72 GWh of storage capacity across its 100 largest confirmed projects, according to project-by-project research by Kapital. By the end of 2026, the fleet could reach roughly 6.95 GW and 20.8 GWh, with storage power equivalent to about 20% of the country’s installed generation capacity. Kapital editor-in-chief Ivaylo Stanchev said Germany may need another five years to reach comparable battery intensity.

The batteries are already changing Bulgaria’s daily electricity market. They absorb cheap solar power around midday and release it during the evening peak, narrowing the price gap between the two periods. June prices were about €10 per MWh lower in Bulgaria than in Romania and Hungary, while Bulgaria and Greece also had lower evening peaks. Stanchev attributed the shape of the curve to batteries, although the report acknowledges that gas prices, carbon costs, heatwaves and geopolitical developments prevent storage from being isolated as the sole cause.

Storage has also become one of Bulgaria’s largest electricity consumers. Conventional summer demand is typically around 4 GW, but battery charging can push total load close to 8 GW, supported by domestic solar generation and imports mainly from Greece. Between midday and late afternoon, Stanchev said the batteries “consume more than all the Bulgarian other loads”; several hours later, the same installations return electricity to the grid, reshaping imports, generation schedules and regional power flows.

The investment model carries its own threat. Bulgarian projects have largely made money by charging when electricity costs as little as €8 per MWh and selling later when prices can exceed €200. As more batteries enter the market, they will raise demand during cheap hours and increase supply during expensive ones, compressing the spreads that made them profitable. “You cannot rely only on arbitrage”, Stanchev said. Banks and investors are consequently examining trading strategies, balancing markets, ancillary services and renewable-output optimisation alongside installed capacity.

Developers are increasingly combining batteries with solar plants. Solar generation provides predictable low-cost charging, while storage allows more electricity to be sold during higher-value periods; the batteries can then stimulate demand for further renewable capacity. Bulgaria’s experience also points beyond national planning: Greek solar, Bulgarian storage and Romanian wind could complement one another through stronger interconnections and coordinated markets during heatwaves, droughts, evening peaks and reduced hydro or nuclear availability.

    Greece is literally burning.

In the past 24 hours, more than 152 new fires have broken out across Greece and thousands of people have been evacuated. Around 4,850 firefighters are engaged in a multi-front battle to contain the flames.

The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) has published its latest climate bulletin for March 2025.

This data visualisation, based on C3S data, shows the total precipitation anomaly in Europe for the month.

It highlights that most of southwestern Europe was affected by above average levels of precipitation, particularly over the Iberian Peninsula.

This region was hit by a series of severe weather events which led to widespread flooding.

On the other hand, in the UK, Ireland, and a section of central Europe expanding southward to the Black Sea, Greece, and Türkiye, the month was drier than average.

C3S provides open data, which is essential for monitoring global climate trends. This information provides evidence-based insights for the creation and implementation of climate strategies.

Storm Daniel has battered western and central Greece since Monday, prompting hundreds of calls to emergency services to pump out water just days after a deadly wildfire that has burned for more than two weeks was brought under control in the north of the country.
    ...
It’s the most extreme weather in terms of the amount of rainfall within 24 hours since records have been kept in the country,” Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias said in a statement, urging people to stay indoors.
