Attempts to Establish Hard Caps on West Coast Drift Gillnet Fishery Questionable
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — After almost a decade of back-and-forth rule makings and court decisions, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) recently released a rule that would establish hard caps on the West Coast drift gillnet fishery. While hard cap policies ensure that fishing activities halt before irreparable damage is done to a special status species, hard caps only work if they are strictly enforced and that is not what this rule seems to do.

Sea Shepherd founder: “no whales will be killed in international waters” this year
According to its website, the “Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization.” They rely on direct-action tactics to stop illegal activities and are often involved in a confrontation with other ships when trying to stop, for example, illegal whaling.
Their founder, Captain Paul Watson, was in the Tampa Bay area over the weekend for a film screening at Eckerd College and for Tampa Bay Veg Fest.
WMNF sat down with him at an outdoor café in downtown St. Petersburg Sunday to find out about the history of Sea Shepherd and what to expect in the future. In this interview, Watson says, “This year marks the first time in the history of whaling that no whales will be killed in international waters anywhere.” He also talked about what Sea Shepherd plans to do about whaling in territorial waters of Norway, Japan, Iceland and Denmark.

’Rampant’ fishing continues as vaquita numbers dwindle

    • An expedition surveying the Gulf of California for the critically endangered vaquita porpoise has reported seeing more than 70 fishing boats in a protected refuge.
    • Vaquita numbers have been decimated in the past decade as a result of gillnet fishing for another critically endgangered species, the totoaba, a fish whose swim bladder can fetch more than $20,000 per kilogram ($9,000 per pound) in Asian markets.
    • Local fishing organizations in the region say that the government has stopped compensating them after a gillnet ban, aimed at protecting the vaquita from extinction, went into effect in 2015.

SkyTruth identified the bulk carrier Lumoso Aman as the likely polluter via AIS and satellite imagery.
On October 10, 2019, SkyTruth discovered yet another likely bilge dumping incident in Southeast Asian waters. At 10:25:26 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), Sentinel-1 Imagery captured this oily pollution during routine monitoring of the Makassar Strait. Lingering off the southwest coast of Sulawesi, Indonesia, this oil slick measures approximately 33 kilometers long. The slick and the suspected responsible vessel (circled in red in Figure 1 below) appear roughly 100 kilometers west of the coast of Makassar, the capital of Sulawesi. Makassar is a port city with active commerce and tourism.
