U.S. police using data brokers

Police and government officals in the U.S. have been bypassing the need for subpoenas and warrants by gathering personal information made available through private data brokers. The data brokers, which advertise heavily on the Internet, have at times admitted to using deception and illegal practices themselves, according to a new report by the Associated Press.

Law enforcement agencies including the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Justice Department, the U.S. Marshal's Service, and local police in various states have been using data brokers to obtain detailed personal phone records, credit histories, and other information on their suspects. The records are often obtained much faster and more easily than using the standard subpoena and warrant process - often taking hours rather than days or weeks. While the data brokers normally charge customers for the information, it is believe that law enforcement agencies are rarely charged for this service.

Despite widespread reports of massive domestic spying by the NSA and other agencies, local and state officials appear to be ready to use almost any means possible to obtain private records about suspects under investigation.

Mexican Police Accused of Killing 11 Striking Teachers in Oaxaca

We turn now to Mexico where thousands of state security forces raided the southern city of Oaxaca early Wednesday to break up a peaceful teachers strike. According to witness reports, up to eleven people were killed in the raid. Two of the dead were reportedly children asphyxiated by massive amounts of tear gas fired from police helicopters. Up to one hundred people have been detained. The local radio station was shut down and four of its workers have allegedly disappeared. Several women have accused police of sexual assault. The state government in Oaxaca has denied all of these allegations. After the worst of the raid was over, the union retook Oaxaca's city center. This is a member of the teachers union speaking in Oaxaca yesterday.

ALMA DELIA SANTOS: Well, yesterday morning around 4:00 is when it all started. Actually it was about 4:45. Cops came in with dogs. There were about 80 dogs just tearing everything up, coming in. A lot of the women got attacked by the dogs to begin with. After that, the cops came in, destroying everything, knocking everything down. A lot of the women were harassed by these cops. There were about 2,000 cops from the different corporations there, uniformed, and some of them were dressed as civilians.

I have not seen any reports in the US media, BBC etc. There is some information on indymedia's Mexico site, some more on the online version of Noticias de Oaxaca -- both in Spanish.
( http://www.noticias-oax.com.mx ) I know that the police have shut down the teachers' radio station 'Radio Planton' but as of 12:00 noon Oaxaca time the students' radio station 'Radio Universitario' was still broadcasting and "you can hear the broadcast from every window and door in town." The students themselves have occupied the university, but the latest reports suggest that the police are heading there now.

Political satire from Vera Productions, that uses edited footage of celebrities and politicians to create a whole new take on reality


Part-Double Take, part-Mark Thomas, Don't Watch That, Watch This takes a whole range of visual forms, from straight film to web cams and jpegs, and re-edits them to present the viewer with alternative realities. So we see Osama Bin Laden working with his Director as he films an Al Quaeda video, David Blunkett giving his real opinions of Cabinet colleagues from the podium at the Labour Party Conference, and Tony and Cherie at home, playing along with the early rounds in Who Wants to be a Millionaire, and revealing themselves to be spectacularly thick.

Interspersed with such 'lighter' material are some harder hitting pieces, like statistics revealing the amount spent by Indonesia on British-made defence transport and arms, presented alongside the amount pledged by the British government in tsunami aid. These sketches make for slightly depressing viewing - Don't Watch That... isn't ideal if you're suffering an attack of weltschmerz.


Devised by Geoff Atkinson and directed by Steve Connelly (both of whom worked on Spitting Image and Rory Bremner), Don't Watch That... employs methods including overdubbing and re-synching, graphics, matting, time-lapse and re-touching. The programme bills itself as 'a show for the jpeg generation', and lots of the material certainly has a viral e-mail feel to it, albeit of super-high quality and production values. There's a lesson behind it all, in that the show highlights how easily reality can be manipulated and subverted to alter perceptions, but it's entertaining enough if somewhat bleak at times.

Major Mischief reports: We went to see if us clowns could fly big planes and drive big cars too, but the army people were too serious and tried to kick us out. Once we played some games and explained consensus to them, they were a little happier with us.
