A continuation of the current trends in AI capacity and adoption are set to lead to NVIDIA shipping 1.5 million AI server units per year by 2027. These 1.5 million servers, running at full capacity, would consume at least 85.4 terawatt-hours of electricity annually—more than what many small countries use in a year, according to the new assessment.

    The spherules collected along IM1’s path by the expedition that I led to the Pacific Ocean on June 14–28, 2023, had an enhancement by 2–3 orders of magnitude in the abundances of elements like beryllium, lanthanum and uranium, implying an extrasolar composition labeled as “BeLaU”-type, never seen before in solar system spherules. Our expedition paper suggested that this enhancement is likely produced by the process of differentiation in a magma-ocean planet of molten rock. The differentiated materials could explain the highest material strength inferred for IM1 relative to solar system meteors based on the fact that IM1 disintegrated at stress level far greater than all other 272 solar system meteors in the CNEOS catalog of NASA. The highest velocity debris from a tidal disruption of an Earth-mass planet around a dwarf star originates from the planet’s crust.

    The many close-in passages of a rocky-planet around a dwarf star on its approach to an orbital eccentricity that eventually leads to its tidal disruption, would result in periodic melting of the planet’s crust before disruption. This melting could yield differentiation of elements, allowing elements with affinity to iron to sink to the planet’s iron core. This process would leave behind elements like beryllium, lanthanum and uranium, producing the “BeLaU”-type composition discovered in IM1’s spherules. The unusually high material strength of IM1 might have resulted from the hardening associated with repeated episodes of melting and crusting and enhanced elemental differentiation compared to solar system planets like the Earth or Mars which went through a magma ocean episode only during their early formation, as a result of bombardment by other objects.

    How many IM1-like rocks should populate interstellar space? A simple estimate shows that the ejection of roughly ten Earth masses per dwarf star would lead to a meteor appearance rate of once per decade, consistent with the detection of a single interstellar IM1 in the CNEOS meteor catalog of NASA spanning a decade of observations of solar system rocks.

    NASA’s Bennu Asteroid Sample Contains Carbon, Water - NASA

    Initial studies of the 4.5-billion-year-old asteroid Bennu sample collected in space and brought to Earth by NASA show evidence of high-carbon content and water, which together could indicate the building blocks of life on Earth may be found in the rock. NASA made the news Wednesday from its Johnson Space Center in Houston where leadership and scientists showed off the asteroid material for the first time since it landed in September.

    This finding was part of a preliminary assessment of NASA’s OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification and Security – Regolith Explorer) science team.

    “The OSIRIS-REx sample is the biggest carbon-rich asteroid sample ever delivered to Earth and will help scientists investigate the origins of life on our own planet for generations to come,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.

    This paper applies concepts of elemental media and metabolisms to the case of cosmic and planetary ecologies that emerge from the interaction between Earth and Sun, manifesting in photosynthesis or carbon isotope chemistry. In doing so, it expands on registers of media theory and environmental studies and prompts the reader to consider the medial and archival affordances of the light-based interactions, and further processes they give rise to. The main aim of the paper is to use these observations to speculate about the human condition in the Anthropocene, characterised by the experience of human mediality. The paper addresses human mediality mainly in the dimension of affective qualities this condition may prompt, and the resulting narrative model of selfhood – the metabolic self. The paper develops its conceptual contribution in close proximity with several artistic examples, especially Eduardo Navarro’s performance In Collaboration with the Sun (2017–2019). The paper is positioned as a contribution to studies of multispecies cohabitation and more-than-human communication, while also developing a narrative strategy for talking about the decentred position of human species in the more-than-human world-making.

    The first global stocktake has now been delivered for climate, but must be carried out for all Planetary Boundaries. We have budgets for safe levels of freshwater, natural land, biosphere integrity, pollutants. They are finite and equally important for the outcome of human development. In short, the world needs to measure and manage the entire planet, a true “planetary stewardship” to have a chance of positive human development, anywhere in the world.

    A global reform in governance is required, where all nations develop and adopt principles of how to collectively manage all the global commons that regulate the stability of the climate system and the Earth system as a whole. Today only four global commons are considered in the legal or institutional framing, namely, the high-seas, Antarctica, outer Space and to some extent the atmosphere. These are considered global commons, primarily because they are located outside of national jurisdiction, i.e., they are owned by nobody, and thereby by everybody. This premise, based on how to deal with collective use of common pool resources, must now be widened, to include the biophysical systems that we all depend on for the stability of the planet. My suggestion is to start with the climate tipping elements, e.g., the heat circulation in the ocean, the large rainforest systems, and the Greenland ice sheet.

    The arXiv director, Steinn Sigurdsson, emailed me the insight that if IM1 was technological in origin, then the enhanced abundance of heavy elements in “BeLaU”-type spherules could have resulted from the fact that LaO over Mo or W sulfide substrates are promising materials for 2D semiconductors in nanotech fabrication. Of course, everyone knows that U is used in fission reactors.

    Dimitar Sasselov pointed out to me that another method to estimate the duration of the interstellar journey is from the abundance of beryllium, which accumulates over time as a result of spallation by interstellar cosmic-rays. Looking up during a starry night on the deck of the expedition ship, M/V Silver Star, it occurred to me that measuring the duration of IM1’s journey and multiplying it by its known velocity outside the solar system, could inform us of the distance and direction of its source star. This provides a unique opportunity to identify the postal address of IM1’s sender.
