Air vehicles carrying a weapon could not be located from the ground e.g. at night time or under cloudy conditions. As radar was still to be discovered, vision had to be supplemented by hearing using the sound of the engines.

The impressive mountain in the background is called Innerdalstårnet and is known as Norway's Matterhorn. It's an area where summer mountain farming [www.herdalssetra.no/engsider/engstart.html] practices from the 12th Century are still being used to graze goats and sheep for cheese making.
