The last remaining public justification for the U.S./U.K. occupation of Iraq is terrorism: The foreign forces cannot leave until Iraq is somewhat peaceful and the terrorists have been defeated.

That threadbare reasoning was ripped apart on Monday as the world -- other than the United States, where broadcast media avoided the story -- was shown two agents provocateurs employed by the British government. Their exact mission will never be proven. The evidence, however, is damning.

The two commandoes -- alternately identified as members of Britian's notorious SAS or a newer offshoot, the SRR -- were driving around a demonstration in Basra when their suspicious behavior attracted the attention of Basra police.

The Scotsman now reports that the men are members of the SRR, or Special Reconnaissance Regiment. The insignia shows a Greek helmet with a sword thrust through the mouth and up through the back of the skull.

The police attempted to stop the men, who were disguised as Arabs in local garb over their T-shirts and trousers. The men wore black-hair wigs and, according to some reports, typical headresses.

And they also carried a whole lot of weapons, including explosives and other bomb-making materials. They began firing at the police and passers-by.

At least one Basra policeman was shot dead. At least one person in the crowd was shot dead. An undetermined number of others were injured in the gunfight.

The British pair was jailed. Arab television showed the beaten men with bandages on their heads, and their huge collection of weaponry. Basra -- a relatively peaceful city compared to the rest of bloodsoaked Iraq -- had suddenly lost patience with the British occupiers, caught red-handed with all the tools necessary to launch "suicide bombs" against the people.

And then the British tanks rolled in ... and destroyed the jail, releasing 150 "terrorists" in the process. Whether the British commandoes were inside the jail is now disputed, as are most parts of the story, with Britian in damage-control mode and Iraq officials universally condeming the "barbaric" destruction of the jail and the suspected terrorist goals of the captured duo.

The city rioted against the tanks and troops, setting fire to at least one of the tanks.

U.K. media is now desperately backpedaling from the version of events reported by at least a dozen independent reporters working in Iraq, after reporting the same general events as other world media on Monday.

A spokesman for rebel Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr said the British commandoes were trying to pass themselves off as members of Sadr's rebel militia.

Sheikh Hassan told Socialist Worker that the two undercover soldiers seized by Iraqi police last Monday were armed with explosives and a remote control detonator. The soldiers were disguised as members of Sadr's militia, the Mehdi Army.

The trouble started when a senior Sadr official was arrested on Sunday. "We called a protest outside the mayor’s office on Monday demanding the Sheikh be released," Sheikh Hassan said. "This protest was peaceful."

"But events in our city took a sinister turn when the police tried to stop two men dressed as members of the Mehdi Army driving near the protest. The men opened fire on the police and passers-by. After a car chase they were arrested."

"What our police found in their car was very disturbing — weapons, explosives and a remote control detonator," Sheikh Hassan said. "These are the weapons of terrorists. We believe these soldiers were planning an attack on a market or other civilian targets, and thanks be to God they were stopped and countless lives were saved."

There are about 8,500 British troops in and around Basra. Four Iraqis died in the riots against the jailbreak mission. Also, a local reporter who wrote for the New York Times and The Guardian was found murdered after being abducted by mysterious gunmen.

Following the lead of its American partners, the British Ministry of Defense denied all wrongdoing, called the destruction of the jail "absolutely right," and blamed everything on a "civil war" developing (or Iran, depending on the mouthpiece) in southern Iraq.

EU unveils plan to log all electronic, phone communication

The European Commission has adopted proposals to log details of all telephone, Internet, and e-mail traffic, to combat terrorism and serious crime.

The push for EU-wide data storage came after the Madrid bomb attacks last year, and intensified after the London bomb attacks in July, when Britain took over the rotating EU presidency.

The Commission proposes storing data related to mobile and fixed telephone traffic for a year, to allow the police to trace the time, place, and numbers used.

Internet data such as e-mails would be kept for six months.

The Commission's text aims to harmonise the current patchwork of data retention practices across the bloc.

The executive's Vice President Franco Frattini said the harmonisation will take into account the fundamental rights of security, the protection of private information, the interests of the police and concerns of industry.

The Commission's proposal will need to be agreed by member states and the European Parliament, while a rival plan will need unanimous agreement among the 25 EU governments.

The rival plan proposal envisages storing data between one and three years.

British "Undercover Soldiers" Caught driving Booby Trapped Car

The following Reuters report raises some disturbing questions.

Why were undercover British "soldiers" wearing traditional Arab headscarves firing at Iraqi police?

The incident took place just prior to a major religious event in Basra.

The report suggests that the police thought the British soldiers looked "suspicious". What was the nature of their mission?

Occupation forces are supposesd to be collaborating with Iraqi authorities. Why did Britsh Forces have to storm the prison using tanks and armoured vehicles to liberate the British undercover agents?

"British forces used up to 10 tanks " supported by helicopters " to smash through the walls of the jail and free the two British servicemen."

Was there concern that the British "soldiers" who were being held by the Iraqi National Guard would be obliged to reveal the nature and objective of their undercover mission?

A report of Al Jazeera TV, which preceeded the raid on the prison, suggests that the British undercover soldiers were driving a booby trapped car loaded with ammunition. The Al Jazeera report (see below) also suggests that the riots directed against British military presence were motivated because the British undercover soldiers were planning to explode the booby trapped car in the centre of Basra:

A parent's worst nightmare is the disappearance of a child. To give families a measure of protection against this ever increasing problem, the Grand Lodge of Indiana and Indiana DeMolay are proud to introduce the Child Identification Program to the state of Indiana. Based on a very successful program started by the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, the Indiana Freemasons Child Identification Program (CHIP) addresses the alarming fact that over 1,000,000 children are reported missing in the United States each year. Sadly, the abduction of children is both under-reported and rapidly increasing in our society. While most are found, many are not.

The Indiana Freemasons' CHIP is the most comprehensive child identification program currently available to our communities. CHIP helps concerned parents to promote the safety of their children by providing a fast, simple packet of information to help authorities identify and recover lost, missing or exploited kids.

The program consists of a brief interview with the child that is recorded on a video cassette to show his or her mannerisms and speech patterns. The child's fingerprints are taken, and a DNA sample is made by swabbing the inside of the child's mouth. All identifying materials are given to the parent or guardian once the child has been processed. No materials or private information is retained by the Freemasons or any law enforcement agency. The program is free and no appointment is necessary.

Two British commandos, members of the secretive SAS were arrested by Iraqi police yesterday in the southern Iraqi city of Basra. The two men, dressed in Arab garb and driving an unmarked car, drew the attention of police. As the car was approached, shots were fired. Conflicting reports make the timeline of the exchange of fire unclear, and there are also discrepancies concerning casualties, some saying one policeman was wounded and/or killed, others claiming two police dead, while still others claim none were killed. But what is clear: the two soldiers were taken into custody and questioned by an Iraqi judge.

Some hours after the incident, British reinforcements arrived at the jail, demanding the release of their colleagues. When refused, the British knocked down at least one wall of the jail. Reports cite the rescue employed either a tank, several tanks, or armoured personnel carriers: Again, accounts are diverse. Everyone does agree though, there was helicopter support for the rescue operation, and at least one tank was later set afire by angry mobs, hurling stones and petrol bombs. Crowds had apparently been drawn to the jail by flying squads of rabble-rousers, blaring news of a killed policeman and the arrest of the British over car-mounted loudspeakers.

Word of the shooting spread through the city, already edgy because of the heightened bombing campaigns against religious sites and observances. (This week marks the beginning of the Karbala Festival, marking the birth of Imam Mohammed al-Mahdi in 868 A.D. on the Christian calendar. It's expected to draw as many as 3 million pilgrims, providing ample opportunities for car and suicide bombings.) These attacks have been cited by Iranian officials as a deliberate ploy by the Americans and their allies, ostensibly to justify the continuation of the occupation. It's a sentiment broadly shared in Iraq. 

Curiously, B.B.C. World Service Radio reports initially identified the car the SAS drove as being: "full of explosives and bomb making equipment." It's a quote this reporter is unable at this hour (S19 6pm pdt) to corroborate. [update (D20)
In fact, none among the several articles relating to this strange tale broach the questions: Why did the shooting start? Why were the men there? What was in the car?

Media emphasis is now quickly shifting to the block-buster rescue mission. An estimated 150 others held in the prison took the opportunity to escape custody. But, that too is a point made moot by counter-claims stating none escaped.

One thing is certain tonight: The relatively quiet British-Iraqi relationship in the south is fast deteriorating.

Also today, 38 year-old reporter Fakher Haider was found dead in Basra. His body showed signs of severe trauma. He was shot to death. Haider becomes the 55th journalist killed in Iraq since the fall of the Hussein regime.

British prison break and blown covert operation, exposes "war on terrorism" lie

On Monday, September 19, 2005, six British armored vehicles smashed into an Iraqi jail in Basra to free two undercover SAS elite special forces commandos who were engaged in a bungled espionage operation involving the planting of explosives. This incident is as obvious and embarrassing as the 1986 downing of Oliver North’s Southern Air Transport/CIA supply plane over Nicaragua (piloted by Eugene Hasenfus), which started what is known as the Iran-Contra scandal. In the wake of official denials and tap-dancing from the British, a new cover-up is already underway,

What this scandal confirms, in spectacular fashion, is that the "war on terrorism" is a lie. It has been a lie, from the manufactured 9/11 to the present; one huge covert operation spearheaded by the US and the British governments, built upon endless faked intelligence and Downing Paper lies. It further confirms that the lie itself is becoming increasingly difficult to control.

Here we have British agents caught planting explosives, setting up a bombing and the murder of civilians, and fighting between the British and the Iraqi police ("allies"). Why?

In the timely and thorough analysis Al-Qaeda and the Iraqi Resistance Movement, Chossudovsky asks: "Has the US [and Britain] created as part of a covert intelligence operation, a bogus ‘resistance movement’ made up of its own Al Qaeda sponsored ‘terrorists’? Their suicide attacks target Iraqi civilians rather than the US military. The suicide bombings tend to encourage sectarian divisions not only within Iraq, but throughout the entire Middle East. They serve Washington's interests. They contribute to undermining the development of a broader resistance movement uniting Shia, Sunni, Kurds and Christians against the illegal occupation of the Iraqi homeland. They also tend to create, at the international level, divisions within the antiwar and peace movements."

The answer to the question, emphatically underscored by the British prison break, is yes.

A manufactured and guided "terrorism", including suicide bombings set up by Western forces, and blamed on "terrorists" (Zarqawi, etc.), and "real" blowback violence (anti-occupation resistance)---fomented by the West, for geostrategic purposes.

The real terror threat originates from Washington, and its brethren in London and Tel Aviv.

Evropská komise poté, co nedávno moudře rozhodla o povolení dovozu produktu Monsanta GT73 (dříve řepky olejné), nyní uvažuje o dalším moudrém rozhodnutí. Hodlá "regulovat" internet. A to tak, aby lidi museli více kupovat noviny a méně hledat inforamce na webu.

"Evropská komise varuje, že bez reforem a inovací na tom budou evropské noviny stále hůře," praví se v článku z iDnes (viz odkaz). "Podle komise na internetu často není regulován obsah poskytovaných informací a mnohdy nejsou respektována ani práva duševního vlastnictví,"

Obsah je nutno regulovat. To je ta správná medicína. Hm...

Evropská komise zvažuje regulaci digitálních médií. Důvodem je pokles nákladu novin. Čtenáři deníků stárnou a pro mladou generaci už nejsou noviny, časopisy či knihy zdaleka jediným zdrojem informací. Také objem reklamy v denících nepřetržitě klesá.

EK kvůli tisku zahájila veřejnou debatu. Na jejím konci by mohl být návrh na novou regulaci zpravodajských serverů.

Komise argumentuje, že trh tištěných médií není v EU vůbec zanedbatelný a zaměstnává 750 tisíc lidí v asi 64 tisících společnostech. Denní obrat dosahuje 121 miliard euro, tedy asi půl procenta výkonu unijní ekonomiky. Deníky si drží podíl téměř 37 procent, časopisy 32 procent a knihy tvoří jednu čtvrtinu trhu.

Čtenáři novin stárnou, reklama nese méně

Noviny dnes sice v Evropě čte na 180 milionů lidí, průměrný věk čtenářů se však zvyšuje. Navíc vytrvale lesají příjmy z reklam.

Patrné to je například u nabídky pracovních míst. Ta se v posledních letech ze stránek deníků svižně přesunula na internet. Především mladá generace totiž dává při shánění informací přednost vymoženostem digitálních technologií.

Evropská komise varuje, že bez reforem a inovací na tom budou evropské noviny stále hůře. Zároveň hájí nezastupitelnou úlohu deníků, časopisů i knih a zvažuje proto, že by v odvětví digitálních médií zavedla společné unijní předpisy. Podle komise na internetu často není regulován obsah poskytovaných informací a mnohdy nejsou respektována ani práva duševního vlastnictví.

BREAKING: Cindy Sheehan arrested in Manhattan.

I witnessed this with my own eyes. Here is my account.

Cindy Sheehan was arrested moments ago in Union Square, Manhattan for allegedly speaking in the square without the proper permit.

A small group of police began to congregate around 2:00 on the south east corner of Union Square. Cindy and her peace entourage were slightly late to the event, contending with public transportation.

Upon her arrival, applause and cheers filled the crowd awaiting her speech. A few other members of the tour movement spoke. Afterward, about 2:50, Cindy began her speech. It was friendly and empowering. She was grateful for the support and urged everyone to go to Washington DC on the 24th of September for a march on Washington.

At the conclusion of her speech, from my perspective, a few loud and impassioned boos erupted, then I saw a hand come from behind Cindy and grab her shoulder-strap on her backpack. The arm jerked her backwards, with such force as to snap her head forward, and she fell from my view.

The crowd erupted in booing and jeering. The crowd rushed the elevated park where she once stood, not to fight but to witness what was happening. People crowded the police, who had formed a semi-circle around what was happening to Cindy (which I could not witness from my vantage point).

"Nazis," "Gestapo," "free speech," "burn the constitution," "traitors," "you can't have her," could be heard from all sides of the angry crowd. The police stood shoulder-to-shoulder with emotionless looks on their faces. UPDATE: Details prompted by comments There was no violence, no violent rhetoric, and the spirit of the event was positive and strong. She was only there for about 10 minutes before she spoke, and spoke for about 5 minutes. The crowd was respectful and peaceful. Cindy and the other speakers were using a microphone and speakers, which may have caused the problem with the permits. The announcer told the crowd that they had been officially warned before Cindy got there. I'm trying to find out the permit stuff right now. She was speaking at "Camp Casey NYC" in Union Square. It was a planned event, advertised in the newspaper. And from what I heard (Union Square is a noisy place), they tried to get a permit but did not get a response from city government after many messages were left. My view was not the best, so I did not see if it was a cop behind her that jerked her away. The immediate booing and rushing of the "stage" (a large part of the park raised by about 3 steps) made me believe it was the police. I could not see if she resisted or not. Britští vojáci v jihoirácké Basře v pondělí večer s pomocí tanků zbořili zdi hlavní věznice a osvobodili dva své kolegy, tvrdí irácké úřady. Dva Brity předtím irácká policie zadržela a obvinila ze střelby na policisty. Britská armáda tvrzení iráckých úřadů o útoku na věznici odmítla.

Britské ministerstvo obrany podle agentury Reuters násilný zákrok proti věznici popřelo a uvedlo, že dvojice vojáků byla propuštěna po vyjednávání.

"Neslyšeli jsme o ničem, co by potvrzovalo náš útok na věznici," sdělil mluvčí britského ministerstva obrany v Londýně. "Pochopili jsme, že proběhlo vyjednávání," dodal.

Dva údajné příslušníky britských speciálních jednotek zadržely irácké úřady v Basře poté, co prý oba muži stříleli na irácké policisty. Při přestřelce byli zabiti nejméně dva civilisté a 15 dalších lidí bylo zraněno.

Britská armáda poté podle iráckých úřadů obklíčila věznici, v níž byli oba muži zadržováni. Kolem se shromáždili nespokojení Iráčané, kteří na britské vojáky házeli zápalné lahve.

Podle jednoho z činitelů iráckého ministerstva vnitra nakonec britské oddíly na vězeňský komplex zaútočily s pomocí desítky tanků. Situace prý využilo asi 150 iráckých vězňů, kteří z pobořené káznice rovněž uprchli.

Guvernér Basry označil údajnou osvobozovací akci britské armády za barbarský, surový a nezodpovědný čin. "Britské jednotky o síle více než deseti tanků podporované vrtulníky napadly hlavní věznici a poničily ji. Je to nezodpovědný čin," řekl guvernér.

Britské tanky osvobodily vojáky zadržené v Basře

BASRA (Irák) - Britští vojáci v jihoirácké Basře dnes večer s pomocí tanků zbořili zdi hlavní věznice a osvobodili dva své kolegy, údajně příslušníky speciálních jednotek. Ty irácká policie zadržela a obvinila ze střelby na příslušníky iráckých bezpečnostních sil.

Jak uvedla agentura AP s odvoláním na očité svědky, situace využilo asi 150 iráckých vězňů, kteří rovněž uprchli z pobořené věznice.

Britští vojáci opouštějí hořící tank při násilných střetech, které propukly 19. září v Basře poté, co irácké úřady zadržely dvojici Britů v civilu za údajnou střelbu po iráckých policistech.

Váleční zločinci, táhněte z Prahy! - úvodní tisková zpráva

Ve dnech 18. a 19. října se má v Praze na Žofíně uskutečnit konference „Dny EU a USA“, pořádaná agenturou Teleaxis. V jejím rámci mají hlavní projevy přednést lidé, spojovaní s dlouhou řadu zločinů proti lidskosti, porušování lidských práv a agresivními válečnými konflikty.

Hlavními řečníky budou bývalý americký generální prokurátor John Ashcroft, zodpovědný za likvidaci řady lidských práv a občanských svobod v USA ve jménu „boje proti terorismu“. Ashcroft v zájmu ochrany "demokracie" neváhal obhajovat a prosadit praktiky jako z repertoáru bývalé bolševické Státní bezpečnosti. Připomeňme jen možnost soudit podezřelé z terorismu vojenskými tribunály, které mohou vynést rozsudek smrti bez možnosti odvolání. Dále například totální státní dohled nad sítí internet, téměř neomezené možnosti odposlechu, tajné domovní prohlídky, o kterých není jejich oběť oficiálně informována, legální umisťování šmírovacího software do soukromých počítačů a mnoho dalšího, zač by se nemusel stydět ani Orwellův Velký Bratr.

Dalším nechvalně proslulým hostem konference je bývalý vrchní velitel americké armády při útoku na Irák a Afghánistán generál Tommy Franks, muž, na jehož rukou ulpěla krev desítek tisíc mrtvých obětí z řad civilistů, kteří doplatili na americké dobyvačné války.

Svatou trojici amerického neokonzervativismu doplňuje bývalý starosta New Yorku Rudolph Giuliani, jehož politika „nulové tolerance“ proti porušování zákona v New Yorku podle mnoha kritiků spíše připomínala fašistické metody.

Dalším účastníkem je bývalý britský premiér John Major, věrný pokračoval asociální politiky své předchůdkyně Margaret Thatcherové, který je podepsán mj. pod svobodu shromažďování a umělecké tvorby oklešťujícími "protitechnařskými" zákony (Criminal Justice Act).

Nehodláme přihlížet k tomu, jak se tito lidé snaží exportovat svoje názory, ospravedlňující koncentrační tábor v Guantanámo Bay, totalitní legislativu typu amerického Patriot Act nebo krvavou válku v Iráku. V říjnu se proto odehraje série protestů proti konferenci „Dny EU a USA“, o kterých vás budeme dále informovat.

wrh comment: Okay, here is the story. The Iraqi police stopped a suspicious car with two occupants wearing Arab clothing. The car was packed with explosives, and the occupants opened fire on the police. The police succeeded in capturing the occupants of the car and surprise, surprise, what they found they had were not insurgents but two undercover British soldiers!

This is, of course, proof that the so-called suicide bombings pointed to as reason to oppose the Iraqi people's efforts to oust the occupation are in fact false-flag operations by the occupiers themselves. The British really did not have any choice but to break their men out of that jail before they talked, but in all honesty, doing so amounts to a confession of guilt anyway.

BAGHDAD, Sept. 19 (Xinhuanet) -- Iraqi police detained two British soldiers in civilian clothes in the southern city Basra for firing on a police station on Monday, police said.

"Two persons wearing Arab uniforms opened fire at a police station in Basra. A police patrol followed the attackers and captured them to discover they were two British soldiers," an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua.

The two soldiers were using a civilian car packed with explosives, the source said.

He added that the two were being interrogated in the police headquarters of Basra.

The British forces informed the Iraqi authorities that the two soldiers were performing an official duty, the source said.
