1991. Lewisham and the Dawn of the Techno Party Movement.
In October 1991 the Spiral Tribe Sound System had just landed back in London after their first summer of free parties held out in the wilds of the British countryside. It was in the heat and intensity of that long summer that they forged the sound that would eventually propel them around the world and into the future of techno.
But meanwhile, in the darkening winter gloom of the inner-city, the Tribe were keen to brighten the nights with their unique style of dance energy. Together with a local crew of punks they took up residence in the abandoned Lewisham Library. After days of decorating the building’s pillars and arches with the ambiguous symbolism of the Spiral’s iconic graphics, the doors were flung wide, the sound system powered up, and the party began. A party that would become known as a milestone in the history of underground dance culture.
Returning to Lewisham, as SP23, are many of the original Spiral artists. Since those early origins, they have travelled the world exploring and extending the reach of their specialist techno-form. And so we are very happy to announce, that for one night only, SP23 are back in London and doin it live (and legally!) – in Lewisham!
